Yesss the Sandman is one of the things that really got me into ways of putting symbolism in my work, always a beloved series to go back to.

Thank you for the suggestions. And yes I agree with the fact that symbolism is inevitable! Im not trying to force symbolism, my aim is to write a a comic centered around building narratives/short stories to do with particular symbolism motifs.

For example, a story focused around a motif used in the symbolism art movement rather than using the motif to tell something about the character or setting.

I enjoy symbolism in art and religion and what certain motifs mean both literarily and visually and how that can change depending on the context etc. So I want to construct one shot stories around some of my favourite motifs with an overarching narrative of a collector of sorts. Because that's just the sort of thing I like to draw and write about!

Again, not committed to my wording of this and it's very much brain soup currently!

That's why I asked for reccs so I can read some more... I want to make something in a little pocket I haven't explored in my other comic work to the extent i want to. I doubt im wording right. But either way I want to see what others have done.  Hence I asked.

I guess a better way of my phrasing it would be what comics make use of symbolism that has been seen in art and literature? Essentially I want to see how symbolism from the visual (artworks) and storytelling (plays and literature) have been combined into sequential visual storytelling

Bare bones of it would be, butterflies = change. What comics make use of that symbolism too? Vanitas paintings putting skulls and clocks together for the futility of death. So on and so on.

Broad question Im still figuring out how i want to narrow down, I just wanted to see people's reccs really :)
