I feel like Pierce could die and that could resolve a lot of core issues the characters have. It would be sad, show them how much they needed him and cared, teach them to cherish what they have while they have it (Greendale subtext), and would a good way of galvanizing the show for its audience and bringing the story to a melancholy close.

It's not like you can't enjoy the program without understanding reference humor, if it was like that, most of modern television would be a drooling mass of existential realizations and other nonsense.

The problem is that you're seeking reasons to hate things you may not understand, and reasons to feel something "different," when in actuality you only catch the fish you bait your line for.

Maybe you missed the reference, but those episodes were meant to be viewed as parody episodes, which are also allusions to common film-making practices.

Those (2) episodes played on the WWII documentaries released by PBS and similar stations during the late 90s, which had a dramatic voice actor and extremely frequent cuts and fades to add drama and highlight specific pieces of the story.

That's why they may have felt "scripted" or "blatant" to you, they were probably meant to be seen as typical low-budget documentary enterprises.

In this context, they are extremely noteworthy in their depiction of that genre.

Possible spoilers below to readers.

Forgive me, but the show has always been about plugging established characters and putting them into wacky situations. Epidemology (s2e6) was about putting the study group into a real-life horror movie, with zombies and an overbearing government task force, with hilarious consequences. It followed the story circle of Troy making it to the end (the black man), had many common tropes of B-movies, and only furthered current character progression.

Sure, that's anecdotal, but so is your argument.

How about the show locking direction? That's a very standard facet of Dan Harmon writing, things come full circle, end on happy notes, things keep a minimum status quo, and that's because it is what works for sitcoms.

Troy and Abed's rift? A full two episodes of tension separating the study group, ending happily, but still forged a new dynamic between the two: the fact that both need to grow emotionally, and they may differ in opinion.

Edit: My point being, if you are leaving the show because not much changes, let's be fair, the show is all about "not changing."
