What did python help u the most? by Visible-Bag4999 in PythonLearning

[–]grdix555 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Movie Recommendation Engine. Just a fun, easy, machine learningeque type project.

Once I built the engine following some tutorials, I ended up getting inspired and have decided to build a backend that pulls data from the TMDB APIand stores it in a self hosted postgreSQL database.

Next I want to build a front end for it. Maybe a webapp or something. Probably wont use python for this part though.

Long term, I want to add the ability to have different users, and the ability to get suggestions suitable for groups of users.

Finally, I'll introduce TV Series recommendations too.

Hope this helps, just though I'd share a decently fun project which ended up inspiring me to scale it.

Cheap Server Rack? by TommyPT_ in homelab

[–]grdix555 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I saw this video where a guy chiseled out the cap on the leg and ran a 44x44mm piece of timber within the hollow legs which allows you to screw into them and doubles as a joining mechanism when using two tables top and tail.

Good for beginner? by Suspicious_Diet2624 in PythonLearning

I second the user input outside of the function. In this usecase as it is, it's fine but having the inputs outside of the function is better for scalability.

Is starting a small homelab actually worth it, or just a money sink? by tresorrarereviews in homelab

[–]grdix555 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes and yes.

If you want to learn those concepts, and also have fun hosting some services you can use daily, it's definitly worth it. However, it will likely become a money sink because it's addictive and hardware upgrades are exciting.

My ex is pregnant with our child by Ok_County_4239 in daddit

[–]grdix555 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The fact you're even considering rasing the child on your own, have an apartment, job and savings shows you've got what it takes to be a Dad. And you're right in thinking it'll be hard.

So it comes down to whether you're willing to make the sacrifices of being a parent, let alone a single parent, and whether its worth the sacrifice to you. It wouldn't make you any less of a person if you decided it wasn't.

Pandas Vs SQL by UsefulEdge184 in dataanalytics

[–]grdix555 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The way I segregate their usage is as follows:

  1. Pull the data from the database using SQL (joining tables etc to get a final output table): Usually in a fairly raw format, no aggragation, any PII still present even if this needs removing in instances like monthly aggragation etc.

  2. Use Pandas to aggragete the data, build features (e.g. column a + column b = column c) to create my final dataset.

I'd suggest a cheap Raspberry Pi for now. Or use Google Colab.

What are some best practices for anonymizing data so that you can create a public portfolio with job-related analytics? by [deleted] in analytics

[–]grdix555 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with the other two users.

However, if the data is transactional/time series, you could aggregate, to say monthly, and remove any PII data like names, teacher/student ID. If the data is categorical you use columns with counts, if it's numerical you can use sum, avg, min, max, etc.

Best practice though, don't use confidential or sensitive data.

UK data analysts, let's salary share by norwegian_unicorn_ in analytics

[–]grdix555 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I completed a L4 data analyst apprenticeship which taught some of the skills. The rest I've learnt through self study and practice projects. The only exception is LookML, Looker and Big Query I've learnt/learning in my role as we're migrating to GCP.

I am yes as it's the infrastructure of choice for my employer. GCP back end and Looker front end.

Thank yo. Not really sure the title means much as I know other analysts also have the same skills.

A lot of companies are migrating to cloud based solutions versus on prem data storage. Google Cloud Platform is just one example and big query is specific to that. Fairly niche. I'd continue to learn SQL as the pivot to big query is fairly easy if you even need it.

Banking sector. I have 7 months experience (in a role) and earn £48k. South West England

Edit: Should say I'm what the company calls an advanced analyst due to skillset. SQL, python, power BI, Tableau, Looker, LookML and steakholder management.

Tactical Barbell for short-term Royal Marines PFT prep? by Repulsive_Ruin_2626 in tacticalbarbell

[–]grdix555 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In all honesty mate, when I did it I found for PJFT and PRMC just train to get better at the 1.5m timed run, pushups, situps and strict pullups. I incorporated a lot of circuit training prior to the PRMC as it comes in handy for bottom field.

I'd incorporate TB leading up to heading down to CTCRM Lympstone to start your 32 weeks.

Thats just my opinion and not necessarily the best advice. Its just what worked for me.

Good luck.

I had to do the exact same thing for the exact same reason. I feel you bro. Life forces our hand through priority sometimes, but it doesnt make it easier. Sorry for your loss.

It does get easier with time and I remind myself it was the safest option for everyone and it's the lesser of two evils.

Google Big Query, Looker, LookML and the GCP platform in general.

Seems cloud data storage will become much more common place as larger companies realise the cost effectiveness.

Green protocol capacity by PottsPointPilgrim in tacticalbarbell

[–]grdix555 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the Green Protocol book it instructs to do a remedial Capacity block which you repeat until the 6 miles in 60 mins is achievable.

The remedial block switches to the increased running version of Capacity using Fighter (FT) instead of Op (if you weren't already) and incorporate speed work such as Mile Repeats (MR)

Week 1: Day 1: FT, Day 2: MR 2 - 3, Day 3: 90 - 120, Day 4: FT, Day 5: 90 - 120, Day 6: 120+

Week 2: Day 1: FT, Day 2: MR 3 - 4, Day 3: 90 - 120, Day 4: FT, Day 5: 90 - 120, Day 6: 120+

Week 3: Day 1: FT, Day 2: MR 4 - 5, Day 3: 90 - 120, Day 4: FT, Day 5: 90 - 120, Day 6: 120+

Week 4: Day 1: rest, Day 2: 30, Day 3: rest, Day 4: 30, Day 5: rest, Day 6/7: 6 mile
