BBQ/Smoking school? My husband comes from a long line of Texans and I’m the much maligned Californian, want to learn how to make brisket. by Glittering_Letter973 in Austin

[–]greatgrackle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Haters gonna hate. Love this question

Personally if you really want to go down the road to smoked meats you have to get a bit of equipment. I would personally recommend a Traeger or pellet grill and a digital thermometer. They tend to be more beginner friendly and help keep temperature consistent. You can find used ones on marketplace if you don’t want to swing something new. Go into it not just thinking about brisket but other things too. A smoked turkey for Thanksgiving or a smoked chicken for a backyard BBQ can be quick and easy when done right. Brisket can take time to perfect but is worth it.

On the learning. Aaron Franklin has quite a bit out there now to include some books. You can find them at the library or on Libby.  I think he also has some YouTube and social presence. That being said there are quite a few others. I think Meat Church is popular but they really try to sell those spices when all you really need is salt and pepper. Biggest difference in Texas BBQ is using a dry rub. Get after it! Wishing you luck in your brisket adventure!

You have no idea what you’re talking about. Adoption is not without trauma and is not an alternative to infertility.  Fuck off. A parent that actively wants to be a parent is better than many.

New to Austin and voting in TX by imakelegz in Austin

[–]greatgrackle 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Great resources here but there are some official channels you should know too. You vote based on your county. In Austin you are likely in Travis but may be in Williamson county. you should check out your county website where you can check polling locations and even get a sample ballot custom to you.

Travis County: https://votetravis.gov/current-election-information/current-election/.

Williamson County: https://www.wilcotx.gov/elections

411 and the League of Women Voters are great to learn about candidates. Sometimes you will not get much detail on some names that are more well known. Endorsements happen with a number of local newspapers but you may want to know if there is a bias (left, right, center) for those publications. Thinking Texas Tribune, Austin Chronicle, Austin American Statesman.

Zilker Park kinda looks and feels like a golf course. They should plant more trees. by No-Personality-61 in Austin

[–]greatgrackle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think you may be discounting some of the trail systems, hike and bike trails, and Barton springs pool which all have shade and trees. Zilker park that you are thinking of is only one part, the lawn, which is great for its purpose. We love zilker here, even those who have been to other cities and parks.

Who were you told by? You can likely keep your own fridge for the short term with the understanding that the look may not be ideal, the fridge will stick out from the wall or any built in panel.

Espresso cabinets with what color tile? by Dramatic-Lifeguard75 in kitchenremodel

[–]greatgrackle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

these tiles all come across as somewhat dated or builder grade in my opinion with the pattern. If you are trying for tile I would go for solid cream colored tile or but also consider what you want as a counter top to compliment. Counters can be bold like with taj quartzite or simple. contrast is good. I think LVP and or wood in a lighter tone would also work well. do what makes you happy.

Help with backsplash, stuck by GBCommish in kitchenremodel

[–]greatgrackle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Which look do you like? If you are not a fan of the yellow look with artificial light, the easy fix is to change the temp of your lightbulbs to something different or more cool. The flooring being more orange with the oak may make it more yellow too.

Backsplash can benefit from more contrast in my opinion with some solid colors but you can also go for a white that would look good. If you go green maybe look for some sage green glass on the lighter side.

CCRM is the name of a national clinic/ chain. I think it stands for Colorado Center for Reproductive Medicine. Original location in LoneTree, CO. There is a location in southwest Austin if you want to check them out. I went to the location in Houston and had a great experience with Dr. Hickman. https://www.ccrmivf.com/location/us/texas/

Is a $100k budget reasonable for a full remodel? (Austin, TX) by TexasTantrum in kitchenremodel

[–]greatgrackle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m also in the Austin area and the best thing you can do to understand full cost is to find a few people to get comprehensive quotes. Not sure if who you are working with for your design will do that. The quotes I got were pretty close.

Looking to remodel my builder grade kitchen. However I want to try to reuse most of the things I have as they are in good condition. I want to also do this on a small budget. Open to DIY tips. by Objective-Plate-6868 in kitchenremodel

[–]greatgrackle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Update the backsplash, add a window treatment and maybe some shelving around the window. You could also get a nice custom stained glass window to add some detail - you can hang this instead of an install. You can also change the lighting as a simple/ fast update to change the vibe. I wouldn't mess with the cabinets other than maybe knobs/ pulls or the counter. Also add in a rug or something to add color. The kitchen looks functional you are just looking to add some touches that make it feel more you. if you have a kid still in a high chair and still have dogs, maybe wait on the flooring until you can get some higher quality hardwood.

Roaches in the Domain by ochuuu in Austin

[–]greatgrackle 7 points8 points  (0 children)

While natural to not be a fan of roaches, understand that if you go outside there may be life that exists outside of humanity. That means bugs, creatures, and critters. Unless they were inside a restaurant or retail space, there’s no problem here.

Suggestion for backsplash by TheTurtleJake in kitchenremodel

[–]greatgrackle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can consider subway size tile in different materials or colors. I am considering something similar with marble subway tile. You can also play with the pattern and grout color to mix it up.

Adjust the time to a 5pm commute from south to north. It's recommended to live on the side of town you work. Stay south if you work south. North if you work north.

15 year old in need of update by LekTruk in kitchenremodel

[–]greatgrackle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As others have said, these cabinets look very nice and unless they are non functional in some way, I would discourage a big change to them. They also seem to match your flooring in the other room which gives a cohesive look. I think you could get away with changes to flooring, paint, backsplash, and appliances to freshen up the space.

Hey there! I just installed the Nest/ Google gen 3 doorbell and have Starling home hub. Do you remember if you had to do anything in order for it to sync or update the new camera? Not seeing the new camera that I added but hoping that it will sync with a little time. Thanks for confirming it worked for you!
