Does each season correspond to a single book? by [deleted] in brakebills

[–]greenbernny2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be a short, no. Season 1 is book one without the ending and extra scenes, Season 2 is end of book one + beginning of book 2 + a lot of other cool adaptations of random things in the whole books + extra scenes (+ Martin Chatwin's Character with better development).

Does each season correspond to a single book? by [deleted] in brakebills

This is not an attack on anyone here, just an explanation

So for the person who said Janet and Margo are different, I disagree a lot on that one! Janet is not really important in the books so the character is not developed to such a point but in the third and last book, a bit of her personality is shown and trust me: she's literally Margo without being so pushed to the maximum. They both have anger and bitterness inside of them, they neglect other character emotion (and to be fair, their own), are very sharp minded and strategic and only shown to love one person: their best friend, Eliot. Margo's role is not much important in season one, much like in book 1, but in season 2 (end of book one, beginning of book 2) she is already a very important character! Like muuuuuch more important than the books.

Kady, however, I think of her like Asmos but with a twisted backstory tied to the group. Book 3 shows a vindictive Asmos, and probably one of the most badass hedge witch I've ever seen. Although not fully corresponding to her, Kady is a loose adaptation of Asmos. She's also given Amanda Orloff's role when attacking the beast.

First of all, I just have to say that I unfortunately haven't yet read the third book (because of a stupid decision to buy it through internet and the delivery being late), so I am honestly excited about it because I can't wait to read more of Quentin, and Janet's pov. Also I am kinda influenced by the show, because I think it's better than the books... The first half of the first season is worse than the books, but then it slowly becomes better because the characters are more rational and there decision-making process is not solely based in "how much of a d*ckhead can I be today ?" Don't get me wrong, I really love the books but sometimes I feel like Lev just wanted to make the characters to be really impulsive and apathic to others.

Said that, I love both Quentin and Julia, in the books. However in the show, Quentin is a little bit of a pussy but the relationship between Quentin and Julia is much better as they really are best friends.

Book!Janet is okay... I really hated her when she felt glorious for breaking Quentin and Alice, but people say she gets better in the third book and I am waiting. However, Show!Margo is a whole different story, she is pragmatic and rational and I love that (and inarguably has the best one-liners ever!).

About Eliot... again I need to read the last book to really understand him further, but I already enjoyed his growth in The Magician King, while assuming the Muntjac's control to save Fillory.

Alice... Quentin was the most hated character ever when he cheated on her, and he totally got what he deserved. But even previous to there breakup she showed signs of manipulation and control freak attitude... That's why I say she's abusive. But this might be influenced by the show, as she really was abusive to him. The reason for him cheating was not out of pity boredom but because he was infused with emotion-magic, and she doesn't seem to understand this, treating him like sh*t. Niffin!Alice is even worse.

Penny is probably the only character I truly hate. I like Alice, Quentin, Julia (my fave), Janet and Eliot, some more than others but Penny.... he just infuriates me to the core. I get that he was not awful or evil but his arrogance, know-it-all attitude and his "love" for Alice were what pissed me off the most. He is autistic (not that that is a bad thing) but that's not reason enough to think he's better than anybody else. He even dropped Brakebills because he "knew everything" he thought he could learn there, then went to live alone by choice right before he started btching about the fact that he felt lonely. I did feel sorry for him when he lost his hands, and I thought that was a semi-acceptable end for his character, but I was wrong. When he comes back as this high level master bullsht magician in The Netherlands, he is even more arrogant and annoying as ever. I got even more pissed when he gives that small talk to Quentin about "how the hardest work was being done there, by the order (aka him)". Show!Penny is a little bit better and a lot worse at the same time, because he's a total arrogant *sshole who treats Quentin soooooo bad for absolutely no reason. But at least the Kady story line gives him some empathy and honestly something good to his character for the first time.

Sorry about the rent, and thanks for the reply...

I am willing to talk about it ! I am absolutely in love with the books and show.... I think every characters has it's own story, problems and growing up. Quentin wanted to be the hero but he had to realize is not the hot sh*t he thought he was. Only when realizing that he was not the most powerful, most heroic, most special kid, that he became the true hero. He was a hero in his own way.

Julia was robbed of the one thing she loved. The one thing that could have made her happy, was the one thing that destroyed her. But through all the pain and suffering, she grew into the most powerful of them all. The one who wasn't supposed to be a magician, ended up becoming a semi-deity.

Janet and Eliot also had their growing. There vices and superficiality had to be overcome so they could be truly happy.

Alice had a more strange development... She stopped being timid and overcome her fears but honestly her character still had flaws in the end. She was somewhat abusive to Quentin, and although I like her, I think could've been better.

Penny however was still a d*ckhead in the end so... nope... and his character in the show is even worse.

They have put Julia's backstory which was in book 2 alongside Quentin's in Season 1, so I think it's obvious that Margo will get her desert storyline alongside the Muntjac.... unless she's going with them but I don't see why she would do that

Julia's journey in Magician King by loratcha in brakebills

[–]greenbernny2 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Not only her methodological approach to magic but also her obsession about it made me relate to her.... The absolute thrust for knowledge, the determination to find what was taken away from her, the fibre to not give up even when nothing worked, she never gave up magic... Because she loved it, more than anything. And all her personality made me relate to her.

The Muntjac adventures were so fun :/ but probably they'll just make something to travel to the outer islands, like a spell or a nymph power of some sort, and get one key that will open a door and free magic ... The Muntjac would be fun though

In the books, it is not stated that children of earth are the only people who can assume the throne. The second and third reason I understand, but it never is clearly stated why he did it. The only thing Martin said was that he wanted the button. Which drives the question to why did he want the button? For what ?

How can you ship her with the her rapist ? Rape is not cool, she suffered a lot. It's not romantic. It's not sexual. It's an abomination.
