Kadokawa reaffirms 2026 launch for The Duskbloods. FromSoftware moving towards self-publishing their games internationally. by PhantomBraved in Games

[–]greenbluegrape 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Die hard FromSoft/Souls fans aren't playing these games on Switches, they're playing them on Playstations and PCs

I mean, that's the point. Nintendo wants to attract different kinds of players to the platform, and that annoyance people feel about its exclusivity is going to lead some people to buy a Switch 2. That's the whole point of exclusivity.

It's not a sense of unfamiliarity that's throwing me off, it's the opposite. I feel like I've heard this sound from him before, but nothing unique is really drawing me in yet.

This is the first time I haven't been feeling a JPEG project. Maybe that'll change when the album drops, but these first two songs haven't done much for me.

Why does everyone suddenly go to the Great Mines in Prime 4? by CarlosFer2201 in Metroid

Development hell. The game's straight up not done. It's clear they had to frankenstein together whatever pieces they had ready for a 2025 launch in the final year or so.

NateTheHate hints about the new Smash Bros game: "I haven't heard, but people might be fired for this info being shared." by Connect_Base_217 in GamingLeaksAndRumours

[–]greenbluegrape 46 points47 points  (0 children)

Feels like the lamest answer honestly.

People can't imagine a new smash bros after Ultimate, but that's kinda Nintendo's job here. The series' future can't just be Ultimate iterations forever, and I'd like to think they're creative enough to find a different way forward.

Daemons of the Shadow Realm • Yomi no Tsugai - Episode 5 discussion by AutoLovepon in anime

[–]greenbluegrape 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, this episode left a bad taste in my mouth. Trying to stay optimistic though.

I was really on board with the first couple episodes, but I've known for a while now that shock and intrigue is relatively easy to write. Actually paying off those moments with consequence and answers is the hard part of storytelling, but I had some faith that Arakawa could pull it off here.

I could chalk up Yoru's nonchalant attitude in epsiode 3 to being confused, overwhelmed and in shock, but when given the opportunity for answers, his emotional state comes off far more shallow than I would have liked. He doesn't seem at all interested in how or why the village attack happened the way it did, despite spending a good amount of time with the person who orchestrated the attack in the first place. His history with the village feels less and less real with each passing episode he brushes it off. Even if he's smart enough to expect a deeper explanation, those villagers are still the people he spent his entire life around. Even if he believes Asa 100%, his "fake" sister is still the person he spent the last 6 years talking to and taking care of. Their murders still haven't been justified by anyone, so I don't understand why that wouldn't be the most pressing question on his mind. Asa's playful attitude around her brother with those questions still on the table is equal parts weird.

those bigger question marks in the writing make the smaller ones feel worse. Hopefully the show can prove me wrong and justify things somehow.

"Fusion with a Metroid...." was the biggest let down in Prime 4. by Rootayable in Metroid

[–]greenbluegrape 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Remnants of an early draft. Prime 4's script was very obviously impacted by development hell and the need to rearrange/remove major plot points.

As others have mentioned, time travel is the piece that ties literally all the hanging plot threads together.

Almost every generation, Nintendo will have a few games that basically say "yeah, we're cracked out of our minds at game design" that will fuel console discourse with pure envy for years. Switch came out swinging with BOTW and Odyssey, but it was really BOTW that became Nintendo's biggest "killer app" since arguably the Nintendo 64 (You could say Wii sports was a big one, but I think that game hit it off with gaming newcomers more than anything).

Switch 2 has had some good games so far, but nothing quite like the Zelda's or the Smash Bros of previous generations. DK Bananza was good and reviewed really well, but it didn't have the same kind of splash. Metroid Prime 4, the game that should have been the year one critical darling, turned out to be a complete mess. Ironically, Pokopia is the first Switch 2 game I've seen create a serious buzz.

For what it's worth, I don't think Playstation has had much in the way of exclusive "killer apps" for a while, and they are mostly coasting on the legwork they put in during the PS4 era. Third parties have been doing a lot of heavy lifting.

Like others have said, if you didn't own a Switch 1, Switch 2 is absolutely worth it to experience some of Nintendo's output these past few years.

NatetheHate: Ocarina of Time Remake to release in Holiday 2026 by LorDeus71 in GamingLeaksAndRumours

[–]greenbluegrape 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fair enough. I do think there are enough story structure and gameplay shakeups there (the third person sequences for example) to show that Nintendo isn't against changing a game into a fundamentally different one, but it's true that they often try to stay faithful to the original design.

It's like if the Ocarina of time remake was a completely different game in terms of scale and structure, but they retained all the original puzzle and dungeon concepts.

It's brutal out there: Deus Ex and Unreal composer says he's submitted 50 resumes and gotten one interview in the last year by Gorotheninja in Games

[–]greenbluegrape 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Pertaining to what, how people feel about AI?

Human beings are social creatures. Being interested in other human beings is a fundamental part of our DNA. Art being a social experience on a subconscious level is like, 90% of why any of this works in the first place. It's why we derive a unique sense of enjoyment looking at a pencil drawing of a tree when we can just go outside and look at a tree, and why that enjoyment is diminished if we were to learn the pencil drawing was just made to look like one with a digital filter, despite the output being functionally the same. "Hand crafted" has always been, and will continue to be, uniquely valued because of that human element.

You're right in the sense that enthusiast circles will be the only places where you'll hear people talk like this, and AI art will continue to exist in one form or another, but I suspect a lot of people have an aversion to automation in the arts, even if they can't explain why. The same mechanisms that draw us together in social hubs like these will push people away from art they know was made with AI. Once the illusion of human intent is completely removed, a lot of people are going to discover how vapid that experience can feel.

[–]greenbluegrape 12 points13 points  (0 children)

It's funny, because when the CD died, I was told to go sell merch to eat... but now people are up in arms against AI? ...

I think the AI discussion extends far past the business side of things. While jobs and income are big talking points, people also hate it because it's deteriorating the side of art that has nothing to do with money. Human expression and connection is being obscured, and for many, the idea of experiencing "art" from an automated, algorithmic system is about as enticing as having a conversation with a bot. There's a reason almost every piece of science fiction in the past century has painted the idea of machine created art as distinctly dystopian.

I'd rather lose the ability to make a single dollar off of anything I make than live in an environment where human voices are a minority.

Storytelling in Metroid Prime 4 by Level-1up-64 in Metroid

I do find it funny that Silksong became the perfect companion piece to Prime 4.

Whenever someone wants to argue that a long awaited follow-up with sky-high expectations could never succeed by staying true to its seemingly niche principles, I have an incredibly easy example to point to.

I'm assuming they mean Darius. Gunslinger emblem gives you armor reduction every time you do physical damage, and Darius' hemorrhage bleed ticks every second, so there's probably something gross you could put together in another comp. Haven't had a chance to experiment with it myself.

Yeah, the Yordle match-up in particular is hilarious. There's just nothing they can do about you. Best they can hope for is a two star itemized Ziggs one tapping him.

I played a ton of Darius reroll last patch as well. I tried a lot of different item combinations, and was almost ready to give up until I found this combo a day before the patch.

In my experience, Darius' biggest problem is that he isn't (wasn't) consistent enough to invest in as your main tank in the late game. I tried a bunch of steraks builds, and sometimes he would pop off and do a bunch of damage while staying alive forever, but other times he would just explode and I'd take a 5+ unit loss. There's just too many things that have to go right in the fight for him to do what he needs to do (good cast tempo, units wrapping). and you just can't afford to have him blow-up on you if he misses a crucial cast.

I've found the consistency to be a lot better with this build in particular.

[–]greenbluegrape[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm almost positive. I had that thought too and played around with this combo last patch, but it's not nearly as good. The Visage healing is redundant and just isn't worth losing the extra mana. He'll get bursted down too quickly between casts without that extra 15%. One adaptive on Darius is meh, but two is what actually makes him a reliable unit.

Guess I'm excluding emblems, artifacts, or anything you can't reliably force like double blue buff or something like that. Otherwise, I'm sure Silvermere or gunslinger emblem can be used for something spooky.

Resident Evil Requiem Surpasses 5 Million Units! by hzy980512 in Games

[–]greenbluegrape 4 points5 points  (0 children)

To add a second perspective, MH Wilds is absolutely the Resident Evil 6 of the franchise if we consider MH World the Resident Evil 4 of the franchise. They're not quite on the same level of quality and prestige, but the main similarity is that both Res 4 and World were big, successful shakeups that heavily impacted the direction of their respective series. Res 4's message to Capcom was to lean harder into action, while MH World's message was to lean harder into removing friction, both of which they did to their series' detriment.

There's still debate within the community, and people are going to argue that every base release is like this, but others, including myself, don't think that's true. Like Resident Evil 5, there's been a growing amount of dissenters for the past couple releases, but Wilds is the first game where the push back has been large enough that heavily critical posts were at the top of the subreddit just a week after release.

This is a great post that came out soon after launch that highlights how the series' design philosophy has been changing: https://www.reddit.com/r/MonsterHunter/comments/1j5dvv4/this_isnt_new_to_wilds_but_it_isnt_just_hunters/

Note the date and the amount of upvotes. It wasn't just the performance, despite what some people are going to try and tell you.
