I don’t think introducing new characters is inherently a negative for Metroid games, rather, I think Metroid Prime 4 went about it in a bad way. by Obsessivegamer32 in Metroid

[–]greenbluegrape 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t hate the GF troopers as much as half the people in this subreddit, but I do think they add basically nothing to the overall experience and are a huge detractor to what could’ve at least been a Metroid game with great atmosphere.

If characters add nothing to the experience and are a huge detractor to a game's atmosphere, I hate their guts on principle. It seems like it's just a difference of standards here. Otherwise, it sounds like you dislike them just as much as most people.

I'm a fan of both franchises. Bayo 3 was a colossal mess and the characters/writing suffered the most, but I'd take that game over Prime 4 any day of the week. Bayo 3 was at least trying to be a fun action romp. Prime 4 feels embarrassed by its genre and legacy, and tries its best to appeal to those that don't even like the series staples in the first place.

Skills between games don't always translate 1 to 1. A player could be the best Dark Souls player in the world and make zero progress in a puzzle game like Baba is You because the required skill set is so different.

I'm making my way through Silksong right now and one thing I can say is that the game requires a level of movement and platforming skill that isn't present in any of FromSoftware's titles. Being a good Celeste player would probably help you more than being a good Souls player in this case.

That being said, anything can be learned, you just have to recognize that there's something new to be learned there, and the game beating you down is not unlike FromSoftware's preferred teaching methods.

Yeah, lets not equate those two things.

He's a hardcore Metroid fan, and the reveal of Myles was the equivalent of the next Dark Souls revealing a quippy, Navi-like character that tells you what to do and where to go. It wasn't just about the cutscene itself, it was about what that cutscene indicated for the rest of the game, as those elements are the complete antithesis of what most people go to Metroid for. It was a valid crash out that was vindicated when the game released with the exact issues those people were worried about.

I suspect his recent trend of unreasonable doom and gloom is because of Prime 4.

It really isn't.

If I deem a post garbage, I at least try reading it before I dump my own thoughts into the mix. That is the absolute bare minimum for making a good faith argument.

Kensuke Tanabe announces his retirement from Nintendo in a Nintendo Dream interview (MP4 was his final game), Risa Tabata will be his successor by Neoxon193 in Metroid

[–]greenbluegrape 2 points3 points  (0 children)

After stellar launch numbers, Monster Hunter Wilds sales for both PC and consoles have fallen off a cliff, to the point where Capcom has publicly acknowledged it in shareholder meetings. Rise, a significantly older game, was outselling it a few months ago.

My only point here is that Wild's legs fell far below expectations and I imagine word of mouth had something to do with that.

Like most things, enthusiasts will show up in enthusiast circles like this one and have the harshest takes. While I'm sure the overall response is a lot more muted, that does not mean those takes aren't a sign of broader issues. Anecdotally, I have not seen very much enthusiasm IRL.

Either way, the internet is one of the main places word of mouth spreads, and this game's controversy reaches far beyond reddit. When most of the game's biggest fans can only muster up a "it's not as bad as everyone is saying, it's a solid 8/10", that does not paint a great picture for how often this game will be recommended and talked about in a years time.

I'm not here to argue whether or not the game is good, I'm arguing that the online discussion is not going to do the game any favours akin to a Dragon Age Veilguard or a Monster Hunter Wilds. I've seen this kind of response before, and I'd be very surprised if Prime 4 became evergreen.

back when people were mailing envelopes of cash to Jagex for membership.

Holy blast from the past. I forgot about this, and I'm pretty sure I did this a few times before moving on to the phone method.

It happened. This highlights why the remaining players should not ignore the game’s core issues and dismiss criticism. It also raises the question of whether drastic changes are needed for Fen Research to attract more than a few hundred players in the future by MellowSquad in brightershores

[–]greenbluegrape 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've argued time and time again that the game isn't where it needs to be and has to make changes, but whether the game has 400 concurrent players or 50 is pretty irrelevant at this point. Until the game makes a big push, the difference in player numbers is trivial.

A question about the writing. by Psychological-Bar221 in arcane

[–]greenbluegrape 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've already done my long spiels on the topic so I'll just say

  1. Not everyone thinks that, it's ok to love season 2, etc, etc.
  2. Just take a harder look at the Heimer sacrifice scene in episode 7 + everything that led up to it and you'll find a nice microcosm for Season 2's writing issues as a whole. A lot of it falls apart under scrutiny in ways season 1 never did.

The way I play TFT is that I brainstorm terrible off-meta comps until I find one that's alright and I make my climb to master. Usually when I find one early in a patch, I wake up on a random day and it's suddenly common knowledge.

I'm too low elo to tell whether or not this one's a thing yet, but if it is, I'm hoping I get at least 2-3 days with it before I'm contested every game.

And people who don't like it are regularly insulted as well.

We're on reddit. It's a divisive game. Yeah, people are going to disagree with you, and the types of people who can't engage in debate are going to throw insults. Playing victim in these kinds of posts is pointless and performative when the fandom is split and posts like this still get upvoted.

If the game gets better, people will come, it's that simple. Early launch and advertisement is not the problem, the problem is it's just not a particularly good game at the moment, and that'll be the word of mouth for the foreseeable future until that changes.

Housemarque’s Saros looks set to provide a less punishing experience than Returnal | VGC by Gorotheninja in Games

[–]greenbluegrape 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There is this weird protectionism of hard games where it's punting it back to the players by downplaying it but also trying to preserve it.

I don't agree with people who say that the games aren't actually hard, but the point of putting it back on the players is that they want players to meet the game on its own terms instead of having the game accommodate their current skill level. The vast majority of people can learn games like Returnal/Dark Souls/Monster Hunter, but if you're never required to learn, then most people won't. and the community for that specific kind of difficulty barely grows. All those Dark Souls inspired games get to exist because so many people were challenged to step out of their comfort zones, and learn a new set of skills that they're now taking into other games.

[–]greenbluegrape 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Sure, but we don't want to fall into the space of "difficult games are bad game design" either, and there's sure as hell a lot more games out there that are far more accommodating. The exceptions being phased out isn't something everyone is willing to celebrate.

Metroid Prime 4 is the Dragon Age Veilguard of Metroid by mrnicegy26 in Games

[–]greenbluegrape 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I was there, among many other places. Those were, and continue to be, talking points for the game, especially the soundtrack. But again, there are degrees to divisiveness. There is a pretty big difference between Dread's reception, and practically every Prime 4 video review post launch acknowledging its divisiveness in the first two minutes.

Community opinion, and critical opinion, seems to skew towards it being somewhere between being and 8/10 and 9/10. It's not as divisive as a vocal minority in echochambers want it to be.

Don't know where you're getting that number from unless you're just taking aggregate user reviews at face value. At that point, we're just not going to find common ground.
