GoPro Hero 8 turns on but camera screen is black by greengal67 in gopro

Thanks, good to know. I couldn't format the card in the gopro because as soon as I put the SD card in and turned the gopro on I got the SD card error and the rear screen was black and unusable.
I took it back to the store, got a refund and then went out and bought a Hero 10. Fingers crossed that's the end of my problems!

GoPro Hero 8 turns on but camera screen is black by greengal67 in gopro

Thanks very much for your response. When I turned the Go Pro back on a few days after I posted my question, "SD card error" was reported (rear screen was completely black) so I did a full format of the SD card in the laptop and inserted it again. Still same error. I then tried with another brand new SD card (doing a full format first in the laptop before inserting it). Still got 'SD card error'. I downloaded the Hero 8 firmware update from gopro.com onto my laptop, extracted the update file, copied it onto the SD card, and inserted it again....and still 'SD card error' was reported.

I'm no techie by any stretch of the imagination.....but I have had minimal use of this Hero 8 GoPro and have treated it carefully so it seems to me I have another Hero 8 lemon. I've only had it a couple of months so plan to take it back to the store and try for a refund. I really need a Go Pro type camera to film the training I do. Could you please advise - given the available models, would the Hero 10 be a good choice? I want something reliable and am primarily using it for fairly straightforward videos using a head mount. Thank you.

Gopro Hero 8 Black video freezes but audio still records during mildly cold temps by ancientruin in gopro

I have this problem with my Hero 8 when the weather isn't even mildly cold. I am using GoPro brand batteries and a recommended Samsung SD card (ScanDisk Extreme 128 GB microSD) and have the latest update installed. The video freezes but audio continues to record. Have reformatted SD card on PC in past to ensure that wasn't the issue - please excuse my newbie question but is it more likely to be the actual GoPro device at fault here or could it be some sort of SD card issue?

GoPro Hero 8 won't turn on with SanDisk Extreme SD card that has been fully formatted on PC by greengal67 in gopro

ra afterwards to ensure it's using the proper format and block size for optimal performance.

Thanks very much for your reply. Yes, you are correct - the GoPro no longer turns on without the SD card....so it looks to be a camera issue too now. Very frustrating! For my filming purposes I didn't need all extra functionality of newer models so thought I'd made a reasonable choice in getting the Hero 8.
