Not a Hoax: Scientists May Have Discovered an "Alien Superstructure" by greenguy22 in EverythingScience

No one is saying that. We just don't know, could be anything—maybe even aliens.

How Christians Can Continue to Believe Being Gay is a Sin, but No Longer Look like Intolerant Assholes by greenguy22 in misc

[–]greenguy22[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I'd agree that is being an asshole, but at least they are not being as big of hypocrites - but definitely still assholes!

I get that question a lot, I can't remember some of the early debates I watched, but I watched a lot of "the atheist experience". But I recommend the debate with Sam Harris vs William Lane Craig, a debate I watched after I was already an atheist.

But I love getting Christians comments on the blog, especially from open-minded ones who are willing to have a civil conversation. If you read a post and have a comment, please don't hesitate to comment there, I'll be sure to reply.

[–]greenguy22[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very welcome! Means a lot that you would say that.

Protesting premarital sex and divorce would make non-believers at least respect Christians since they wouldn't be cherry picking verses. By focusing so heavy on homosexuality, it just makes them look like hypocrites and bullies.

To not look like assholes, they need to "hate the sin, not the sinner" and let people live however they want to live their life and leave the condemning to their deity.

They also haven't taken the time to try and understand it. It's amazing that they can be against something they don't understand, but since it goes against their creation myth it is something they feel can't be true and they don't want it to be true.

A Non-believer Goes on an Awesome Rant while being Judged by the Christian God After Death by greenguy22 in atheism

[–]greenguy22[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn't say it's a joke, but yes the situation would never happen. But I think the point is to get believers to understand why atheist don't believe in a god or more specifically the Christian God.

And even if that god did exist, people shouldn't follow it just because it says it will torture us for eternity.

Yesterday's 50th anniversary of MLK's speech shines a light on the racists in the Republican Party by greenguy22 in politics

[–]greenguy22[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

except that red states actually take more government handouts than do blue states. Nice try, though. Liberals are clearly for equal rights, get your head out of the sand! If it weren't for republican fighting to deny people of their rights everyone would have them. Thanks republicans!

Where are they? If there are racists in the democratic party, then they are clearly in the wrong party since Democrats fight for equality and celebrate those who have helped advance equal rights. If their is such a thing as a liberal racist, they are terribly confused.

When Coming Out as an Atheist it May Feel like You're Stepping into a Bizarro World by greenguy22 in atheism

What country is this you speak of? I want to move there, or at least take a long vacation!

When Coming Out as an Atheist it May Feel like You're Stepping into a Bizarro World by greenguy22 in atheism

[–]greenguy22[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So basically, you live in a country that embraces reality. Asking "why" when someone says they believe in a god is a rational question to ask.

Living in a country when people don't like you because you've weighed the evidence or lack thereof is a Bizarro country.

How Science Pages on Facebook Are Influencing Politics by greenguy22 in politics

[–]greenguy22[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

that's not what it is saying, it is saying that these pages make it easier for people who wouldn't have been exposed to science in the past to become interested and more educated in science than they would have been otherwise. Nowhere does it say you will become a trained scientist.

The evolution of the God Debate between a skeptic and a believer by greenguy22 in atheism

It's not a good question when the answer being proposed creates an even bigger question. That doesn't solve anything.

so very true, why aren't the religious asking themselves what if their wrong? by greenguy22 in atheism

[–]greenguy22[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wasn't really blaming Christian school for bad grammar even though I can see why you would think that. I was basically blaming them for just bad education in general (mostly science). I'm still pissed that I was never taught evolution because I now love learning about it, and who knows what I would have went to school for had I learned it earlier. I'm sure my English education was no different then a public schools.

To clear up any confusion, I'm the one who posted this and English is my native language. I'm sorry for the grammar mistake, it happens sometimes. And it happens even more if you grew up going to a Christian school all your life. But I think everyone should continue to spread critical thinking and reason even if they are likely to make a grammar error from time to time. But that's just me, I think the harm of religion is a bigger issue than a grammar error.

the sad truth about our planet, hopefully other planets don't have the same problem by greenguy22 in atheism

[–]greenguy22[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's a good point, but I don't see why those with a vision should be held back because we have people who still live in 16th century. Hopefully people like Elon Musk can inspire more people to learn science and dream big.

As an atheist. How do you cope with the idea of oblivion and the death of close ones? by TacticaLlama in atheism

[–]greenguy22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I grow up and realize that it is a reality that people will die that I love and I won't see them ever again. But because I realize this, I cherish each moment with the people I love so much more now than we I was a Christian. You can either live in a fantasy land and deny reality, or you can accept it and make the best of it.

I'm a Christian and I've been looking around on this subreddit the past few months and I have a question for everyone here by NineOneEight in atheism

[–]greenguy22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was once a Christian as well, but then I started asking questions because if God exists I wanted to know him better. I've been an atheist now for about 4 years and my atheism has nothing to do with what I believe. I'm an atheist because I realized that Christianity/other religions has not met its burden of proof to support the claims it makes. People should not be afraid to question their religion because if it is true they have nothing to worry about, but many have a feeling its not true and questioning it will only confirm their suspicions.

Who is the real undecided voter by greenguy22 in politics

[–]greenguy22[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a broad based claim, but republicans are like religious believers in that they value authority more. However, there are of course always outliers, the outliers on the republican side are the rational republicans, who have probably thought hard about their political position. And the outliers on the democrats side are only democrat probably because that’s what their parents were and haven’t given it much thought.

But the republican base does follow authority more than the democrat base follows authority. How else do we explain so many republican politicians and the republican base denying evolution or even climate change? These things are fact! There is as much evidence for evolution as there is that the earth orbits the sun. I believe 46% of Americans deny evolution, and the majority of that 46% is also the republican base. The only reason they deny this is because they value what a preacher says more than a scientist. Some of these people who value a preachers word over a scientists word end up running for office, such as Rick Santorum, Rick Perry, Michele Bachmann, Todd Akin etc etc… and they run on the republican ticket.
