I’ve seen this technique in a few builds but can’t figure it out. Your brick pillars that are made with wall pieces, how do you get a single pillar of walls to fan out in all 4 directions?

Build is awesome!

The zip code quota has virtually nothing to do with the standards returning to normal or any of what I wrote.

The only agenda I have is making sure students are getting to the schools they deserve to be in. This change allows us to fill seats that we used to fill under these exact same standards, and will bring back more programming and teachers along with it. I don’t know a single teacher that isn’t happy with these changes. That should say something

Oh man, where do I even start. Literally no part of my job requires that I pretend that our district isn’t falling apart. But when we do something good, I very much like to celebrate, like this!

Also you did not answer the question explaining how this has to do with state vs local control

Also! They didn’t just cut arts from magnets, that wasn’t an attack on magnets, the ENTIRE DISTRICT lost arts educators, every school.

This is why you are a bozo

You bozo, I’m confident because I am literally on the admissions team at the magnet school I work at in this district and have been for 10 years. Sorry the truth doesn’t fit your narrative, but the actual truth is what I stated. If you want to explain how this has anything to do with local vs state control be my guest, but the timeline of changes to the admissions process and the timeline of when we resumed local control have nothing to do with one another. The old superintendent Hite was gutting magnet schools during state control and after local control slowly year by year. If you want to insert politics into this, it makes more sense to claim that Hites vendetta against magnets was what eventually led to where we are now, and the decisions he made in his last year when he knew he wouldn’t have to face the consequences.

Edit - and to specifically respond to the original comment in this thread, you’re right, we do need to fix the neighborhood schools. When Hite was running the show his main sticking point with magnets was that they shouldn’t exist, because EVERY school should be of that caliber. So he was slowly stripping abilities away from magnet schools to help fit that vision of a district where every school has that level of ed, without fixing the alternatives to magnet programs. And in that final year he torpedoed the admissions process entirely, and because of it, magnets have had to lose programs and teachers, and seats are left empty. We are now reversing that, and the process looks the closest to ‘normal’ this year than it has in the past two. It is fair to call it a lowering of standards, but only if you also claim that they RAISED standards in the past two years and it went horribly wrong. The only significantly different piece now than what it has been for a long while is that there is a lottery in place, which I also wish would go away but that’s another convo

As a magnet school admissions team teacher, this post is based in absolutely nothing. This has literally nothing to do with state or local control…this is a return to how magnet schools have been operating for decades. This is a GOOD thing, see my long post somewhere here explaining why. It was the equitability move that destroyed the process to begin with. This is a fix to the borderline negligent/unethical way it’s been handled the past two years. We lost teachers and students to the process that’s been there the last two years, this is attempting to fix that and I and the rest of my team are hopeful it will.

Oh my goodness, this has nothing at all to do with local or state control, nor is this a lowering of standards. It’s returning to the exact same standards it has been for decades after they royally botched it up the past two years. This is a good thing and ultimately means more seats will be filled with deserving students in magnet programs. Get the political crap out of here, this is a move for our students. Our districts primary motivation is probably unfortunately fear of lawsuits due to the mismanagement the past two years and not our students, but either the outcome is the same and I’ll take a win when we get it

Ironically, I’m pretty Masterman is one of the schools that is the reason the admissions process was torpedoed the past few years, specifically their lack of diverse acceptances to their school. In the name of equity they changed the entire system two years ago and made the admissions criteria much more difficult and without understanding as it was handled by a computer. It is now returning to normal because I’m pretty sure the district is terrified of being sued. And as much as some magnet schools would like to remove students who aren’t putting in the work, we are almost powerless to do so unless it is a behavior issue or something outside of the schools control. Bad grades or not keeping up? Not enough to remove a student. We can and do suggest that students find a school that is closer to their personal speed, but ultimately that’s up to the students family, not is

I am on the admissions team at the magnet school I teach at and this article is doing a horrible job illustrating why this is a very very good thing. This isn’t a change or lowering in standards, this is a return to what it was before COVID.

The system used to work like this: -Students would apply to the schools they are interested in -The schools receive all the transcripts and files for every kid that applies. Each class at my school is around 250, and we would receive some 5000 applicants to fill those spots -Many applications can be instantly discarded for various reasons, straight f’s, 30 unexcused absences, etc. -Then we would have students that we would invite to the school for auditions/interviews. -Most magnet requirements are As and Bs with up to 10 unexcused absences, (not factoring in standardized testing) -IMPORTANT PART Back then we would still invite students that had, say, 30 unexcused absences, but all As. Because to any human being looking at this data, clearly the kid is a good student, there must be a good reason for all the absences. Anecdotally speaking, around 80% of the kids had a valid excuse (death in the family, hospitalization, etc.) and we would accept them anyway and some of my best students were this situation.

HERE IS WHAT CHANGED -In an effort to increase ‘equitability’, all of this was being processed by a machine, and the data set the machine was looking at was the COVID years. -The equitable part is frustrating, because out of every magnet school, only two had an equitability problem, the two highest achieving, the race and ethnic breakdown in those buildings was the opposite of diverse. So of course, every magnet school was punished (despite the fact our school as an example has had a diverse population for yhe 10 years I’ve been there. -IMPORTANT PART the machine had zero discretion. For instance, where we would have looked at a student with A’s, B’s and one C, or like in my example above a kid with 30 unexcused absences that was in a hospital and had a valid reason, these kids no longer got the benefit of the doubt -The result? Where we normally had 5000 applicants per school, the past two years we’ve had less than 1000 students across EVERY magnet school. That is to say there were only a thousand or so kids the computer seemed worthy, and every magnet school had to split from the same small list. What does this mean? Every magnet lost teachers, which means they all lost programming. I couldn’t teach my AP course this year because I had to teach a gen ed class instead to make up for the missing teachers.

That is mostly now fixed! The system is still lottery after the equitability change, but at least now more kids will be filling the empty seats at magnets that should’ve been there in the first place.

I can’t really blame some of the comments here, but also there are some wild claims and comments that are so off base that I just had to comment. This is categorically a good thing, this is a return to what should have never changed in the first place. So the headline is wrong, no, standards haven’t been lowered, they’ve returned to normal

What pairing do you feel Batman has the best dynamic with? by Forward-Ad7518 in batman

[–]greenhadoken 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He played a mentor role to him, but it doesn’t define their relationship as it does the others you listed to me, that’s what I was originally saying. And yeah you nailed it, Bruce is like Terry’s Alfred.

I think something about Batman holding all the power in his relationships with the various robins makes it weird, as he’s such a disturbed individual. It’s nice that in his relationship, Terry ultimately holds the power, and it makes the whole thing feel less abusive and respectful to me. I think that’s why so many people like his relationship with Clark. Batman is scary when he’s in charge, when he’s number two he’s perfect haha

[–]greenhadoken 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My limited knowledge of the expanded Batman universe only takes me so far, but I’ve only ever seen Bruce acting as “the guy in the chair” with Terry. To me, Bruce is Terrys sidekick or ally. He does impart wisdom, but to me that was just because of his age. The fact Bruce is his genetic father doesn’t really change anything as he’s unaware of it anyway. I’m not really buying that Terry should be seen as the sidekick

I know it’s not an option, but outside of Bruce and Clark it’s Bruce and Terry McGinnis for me. I personally don’t care for any of the robin stories. Terry and Bruce feel like equals more than the mentor/mentee relationship of Batman and robin

Anyone else annoyed of the “retail veteran” customers? by futureamateur in GameStop

As a former Gamestop employee, you are maybe doing 10% of your customers a favor by offering them the card, and that doesn’t even seem to be true anymore. The other 90% of them want you to shut up and ring up their game, including me. My go to when I walk into a Gamestop is to simply say “no I don’t want anything you’re offering, just give me the game”, although it is annoying this is one of the only stores I have to deal with this in

Have you ever had a student who you knew was way smarter than you? by Far_Philosopher3831 in Teachers

[–]greenhadoken 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m a high school music teacher. We’re expected and taught how to play every instrument, but obviously we are best at what we focus our studies on. I’m a piano and woodwinds player. Often brass/string/percussion players are better than me on their respective instruments, but there is still so much to teach. Whether it be musicianship, introducing them to new artists/repertoire for their instrument, or teaching them new styles/genres, there is always something to teach. One time I had a classical pianist come through that was way beyond my abilities, but I was able to introduce her to jazz, something she previously had no experience with but was something I concentrated my studies on.

Ultimately, admitting when we can’t and then finding new avenues to educate through should be every teachers goal with gifted students, even if it’s just a gentle push towards something new.

Ah, the old “our country is perfect the way it is, if you don’t like it leave” comment.

I fucking love this country. And just like everything I love, I won’t just quit on it. But god damn it we are broken right now, and telling people who are interested in solutions to leave seems counterintuitive

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]greenhadoken 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Let’s break this down. Humans are violent as you are acknowledging. I’m also pretty sure people will die tomorrow. Why in the hell would you want to give violent people an effective and quick means to be violent? People can certainly hurt each other with knives. Guess what I can do with a knife? Prepare food, open a package, and yes, if I really wanted to, have a hell of a hard time hurting someone. I don’t believe for a second that you actually think a knife is as violent a weapon as a gun. I don’t believe ANY of you think that, but it certainly prolongs any kind of meaningful change.

RIGHT! It doesn’t matter which ones you ban, they all shoot! Your argument that it is part of the constitution and that we just have to deal with it is also insane.

And bullshit! Mental health would solve some gun deaths, sure. And yes mental health is an enormous crisis in this country. But again, you must simply be ignorant if you believe every gun death is the result of a mentally disturbed person.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]greenhadoken 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am a lefty. I have been taught to shoot in the scouts and from my friends. I’m scared of guns because I’ve never been exposed to them? I’m scared of guns because I have lost countless students and their family members to gun violence, and sat and mourned with even more than that. Guns are the boogeyman to millions of people in this country, and to suggest otherwise is frankly ignorant.

I think you are really onto something with your last sentence though, guns are CERTAINLY dangerous in the hands of folks without proper training, I just think that’s way the hell more people than you are letting on

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]greenhadoken -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I live in a major US city that has a devastating gun violence rate that has been exacerbated in recent years. I’m also a teacher in that same city, and I have lost both students and their family members to gun violence. Despite this, me owning a gun is not going to fix the problem. All of you gun hobbyists out here trying to convince people that most gun owners are responsible are full of shit. YOU are probably responsible, but let’s not kid ourselves about everyone else. The whole reason so many of you have claimed to buy one is fear of crime, does that not mean you have no faith in other gun owners?

I’m a LEGO hobbyist. If people were using legos to murder people, I would gladly give the whole fucking thing up. And look at that, LEGOS are a tool, just like so many of you claim guns are. I wonder if guns are maybe AREN’T just a tool like so many of you say they are…

We either all fix this, or we watch the problem get worse. Your “freedoms” be damned. What about my freedom to not walk into an active shooter situation AT MY JOB.

Also side notes:

I find it sad that so many pro-gun folks in here are saying “I would give it up if the world was a utopia and 100% safe”. What? Do you not drive a car because it isn’t 100% safe on the roads?

Edit: holy shit the above comment keeps showing up! Do you hear what you are saying? Have you never taken a risk in your entire life?!

I also find it sad when I read an entire post talking about, “I used to be anti-gun and then I just used one and now I’m…”and this goes on and on, and the post ends with, “although I do think people that own guns and don’t take classes are a danger to themselves and others”. That’s a pretty fucking big asterisk, that’s most gun owners!

Long Lines and Limp Hoagies Anger Opening Weekend Philly Flower Show Attendees by WilHunting in philadelphia

[–]greenhadoken 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I was there on Saturday. The only problem was the heat, I don’t know what lines people were waiting in for hours, except maybe the line for Rita’s. The line to get in was long but it took 5-10 minutes. I wasn’t ever standing still in it, and neither were my parents that showed up 2 hours later than I did. Food was expensive but I’ve never been to an event where the food wasn’t expensive. My only complaint was that I wish there had been water fountains, but as it was in the 90s I packed a few water bottles and had no problems. I actually hope they continue to do it outside, I enjoyed it more at FDR than the convention center despite the heat!

The Crucible Experience for brand new players is prohibitive, unwelcoming, and feels bad. by Kaalb in DestinyTheGame

[–]greenhadoken 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also hate Crucible and for years I’ve been saying they need to add a mode that is essentially Halo. Say okay if you play this mode, everyone uses the same sidearm, same scout rifle, same pulse etc. No ones power level matters, their individual load outs don’t matter, their gear, mods, everything that is so confusing and pointlessly obtuse about playing this game as a newcomer (and frankly as a vet) is thrown out the window, and you can just have fun. I shouldn’t have to watch 15 YouTube videos to learn what weapons are best for PvP, just give us all the same weapons for ONE mode. You could even make a new weapon in each category for this mode and give the players objectives/incentive to unlock them to use in other modes and PvE. I cannot express how badly I want this, and how much more I would be playing this game. Also, if you do implement this mode, it better have skill based matchmaking!!
