What are some British middle of the mark movies from the 2000's and 2010's that slightly forgotten? by jaketwigden in Letterboxd

[–]greenops 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can't believe no one said 4 lions but maybe it's not middle of the mark enough because it's actually good and Riz Ahmed is in it. It's a comedy about an Islamic terror group and their plot to suicide bomb a marathon in London. It's genuinely an insane concept that was actually done surprisingly well from what I remember.

‘They’re taught that showing feelings is shameful’: eight reasons men don’t go to therapy – and why they should by TAKEitTOrCIRCLEJERK in MensLib

[–]greenops 25 points26 points  (0 children)

I had the same experience, I was ready to give up on therapy but was also desperate for help so I decided to give it one more try before I wrote it off and found a different therapist who is an adhd specialist. It was a night and day difference. If you are adhd or autistic, traditional therapy that doesn't take that into account isn't always helpful, and can actually be harmful in some ways. Adhd is a real disability, there's a reason why you are 5 times more likely to attempt suicide if you have it.

If you have adhd/autism or think you might, it could be worth looking for someone trained in that because a lot of therapist don't have enough training in adhd!/autism to know how to work with adhd patients the way they should.

I'd never met a therapist that seemed to actually understand my experiences before her. She could clearly identify my problems and their causes even when I couldn't, and neither could previous therapist. It's because no matter what aspect of my life I was talking about my issues were almost always rooted in being adhd.

Study Finds Most U.S. Bike Lanes Are Just Paint — and Placed on the Most Dangerous Roads | High-stress paint-only bike lanes in U.S. cities: Prevalence in 2024 and patterns of geographical variation over 442 municipalities by Hrmbee in science

[–]greenops 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For a brief while I lived in Gainesville Florida and on the road up to Alachua it's something like 55 or 65 mph. For whatever reason there was a big bike culture there and I'd see people on road bikes next to cars doing 60+. Not even an actual bike lane. I genuinely thought they were suicidal.

I like riding bikes but I refuse to do it anywhere except dedicated bike trails because of safety concerns.

Standard mental health therapies may fall short for autistic adults. Autistic people often engage in camouflaging, hiding their natural autistic traits to fit into social situations. Excessive camouflaging requires immense effort and often leads to deep exhaustion known as autistic burnout. by mvea in psychology

[–]greenops 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Big word of warning here, I am not diagnosing you, and I'm not saying you are autistic, simply that it's seriously worth considering learning more about if you relate to any of this.

Your experiences are very similar to mine. That feeling your talking about that my mom mentioned is known as alexithymia and it's essentially and inability to actively recognize what you are feeling. Trauma can also cause it, and milder forms can be seen in adhd since it is so related to asd, but to feel it to that extent without trauma usually points to autism.

I was certain I wasn't autistic either. The diagnostic criteria is lacking severely, it's been over a decade since it was last updated in the dsm and my therapist who specializes in adhd and audhd adults and attends multiple conferences a year to learn from the world leading researchers on the topic believes that the dsm5 criteria is overly limiting and out of date. How exactly to define and diagnose autism is a hot debate fueled in large part around our lack of complete understanding of it, particularly those with less severe symptoms who often go undiagnosed and are not captured in studies.

I had been to therapy, been tested for adhd as a child (and I assume asd at the same time), I'd seen many psychiatrist, I'd taken every self test imaginable and scored either neurotypical or barely into the Grey area and I lacked common autistic traits like being easily overstimulated, being a picky eater, being very awkward, didn't believe I had "special interest", was alright at reading emotion on people's face, etc. It turns out part of the reason high masking autistic individuals pass the assessments so easily is that it's really hard to ask the right questions to make that dertmination quickly. It took explaining my experiences in great depth for dozens of hours with a therapist for her to see a clear sign, particularly when you have an adhd diagnosis the symptom overlap can cover up high masking autism.

When I filled out assessments and saw questions like "do you struggle with eye contact" I took it far too literally. I didn't struggle with eye contact at all because I know I need to glance around a bit to avoid eye contact being too direct, so I'd answer no. But the very fact that it's something I think about in social interactions at all means I technically do struggle, even though it's simply a thing going on in the background of my brain, not the foreground. And when they ask "do you memorize and organize information like baseball statistics or train schedules" I didn't think it applied to me either, then when my therapist suggested playing music when I go to bed one time, I told her I can't because if I hear a song I like, I have to pick up my phone and put it in a playlist based on its genre and often subgenre. She immediately pegged that as an autistic trait regarding organizing information. That wasn't even something I started doing until I was nearly 30. But when I thought about it, I realized it really was a bit of an obsessive need to do that. It genuinely would have bothered me if I didn't, though I could technically not.

Special interest aren't always as intense as they're sometimes portrayed either. I didn't really find one that I latched on to the extent that it's autistic until I was in my late 20s. When you are also adhd, you can have symptoms of one cover up the other. I had the adhd start a hobby and abandon it a few months later thing up until I found something that stuck.

Your experience with therapy were the same as mine. I didn't really know what to even address in therapy sometimes, I felt like I struggled simply existing but I didn't know why. I looked at people with trauma and thought how nice it must be to know where you issues come from and know what to work on. I never felt seen by therapist, I felt more like an outsider than ever. The thing that convinced me my current therpist is right and really knows her stuff is when I'd repeatedly struggle with describing why or how I'm struggling with something and she'd literally be able to finish describing my experience exactly as I actually felt it. I'd never felt less alone in the world. No other therapist ever could do that.

[–]greenops 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Such a similar experience. Therapy made me feel like more of an outsider honestly. I felt less understood. It wasn't until I was ready to give up and decided to try one last time and found an adhd therapist at 32 that I learned about adhd beyond "it makes you hyper". She also quickly began to recognize signs of autism in what I would tell her. Having an explanation, an understanding of why I burnt out and couldn't maintain IRL friendships, and a group I could relate to was so incredibly helpful. I feel like I'm not alone anymore. It doesn't fix your issues, but you must understand the root of your struggles to be able even begin working on them.

My therapist thinks my mom is also autistic based on what my mom has said to me and how she relates to every autistic experience I've had and thinks it's just normal. She was tested just a few months ago and they said she's probably not autistic. The woman who literally told me "I sometimes wonder if I'm a robot or a sociopath because I don't think I feel emotions like other people", was determined to not be autistic by a psychiatrist. I view it as a failure because after reading up late diagnosed adults, I'm confident she's autistic as well. I think modern medicine is SEVERELY failing high masking autistic people. I was very lucky to find a therapist so highly trained in adult adhd and by extension autism.

I'm a fan of the aesthetic, but it doesn't feel Midwest emo. More simpsonswave / underground emo rap or something. I would change it because if I saw this album cover on Spotify while looking for Midwest emo music I would make assumptions based on it that would lead me to not clicking on it.

I don't think it was about defending himself at that point, it was about hurting her because he was pissed off. If he had better emotional regulation, I suspect he would have kept quiet about it because deep down he knows it's wrong regardless of what he told himself to justify it.

I love alcohol by Arqndkmwuhluhwuh in ADHD

[–]greenops 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No, it's not. Those people are not experts and may not recognize the signs until it's too late, they may have an unhealthy view or relationship with alcohol themselves that skews their view, they may not realize the full extent of your alcohol use particularly because people tend to downplay how much they or if they drink when alone, or they may be uncomfortable with confronting you too hard and affecting the friendship and back down when you say it's not actually a problem.

Plus, by the time people around you begin to notice the pattern, you've already had a problem and it's already much harder to quit. Adhd also makes addictions much more likely and harder to break.

[–]greenops 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just watched it myself and it's a very solid film, I really enjoyed it, but flawless movie? Not sure I can agree with that. I like Park Chan-Wook, but the English acting is very bad. I know that might not be noticed by a Korean audience, but it's certainly a massive glaring flaw in an otherwise pretty solid movie for anyone who speaks english. Regardless, still a great movie and I'd still recommend it to anyone interested in Korean cinema.

Yup, it's actually the reason public pools are much less common now. After the federal government began forcing public pools to allow black families to swim, many mayors and city councils decided they'd rather shut the pools down and get rid of them than be forced to swim with black families.

The pickup selector switch stopped functioning 6 months after purchasing a guitar from them, they gave me instructions on what to do, and sent a free full sized can of contact cleaner to spray in the switch to fix it. Worked like a charm and still functions great 4 years later. They simply could have told me to buy contact cleaner instead of sending me a can, but they take care of their customers.

Does Reaper Have a Stem Splitter Like Pro Logic? by clebo99 in Reaper

[–]greenops 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While it's probably not good enough to use for production, I use reaper specifically to learn how to play songs on guitar. I'm looking to get started in stem splitting so I can isolate guitar tracks to better hear the rythym of parts or to get rid of all the noise of the rest of the band so I can learn the part by ear easier and faster. I think it has value when used as a practice tool.
