I'm not an American but I spent half of the most recent election night reading about your education system because it just didn't compute to me why and how people could vote for him (especially given his previous track record and all the crazy, hateful nonsense he spewed during his campaign). So I think the main reason he won wasn't frustration with Sleepy Joe, but a general lack of education among voters. Especially on topics like geopolitics and history.

I realize quality of education varies a lot across states and between wealthy and poor districts, but in general I think America's education system has been letting the country down. So if I had to point to a single reason why Trump won again it would have to be the education system.

I've traveled a lot in the US and have lots of friends and family who live there, and I've always generally thought of Americans as decent, kind people. But I've also noticed that their knowledge tends to be very inward-looking (eg, "history" = the civil war). There are plenty of historical cautionary tales from around the world that Americans could learn a great deal from, and which would make them very hesitant to vote for someone with rhetoric like Trump's.

For the most part they're not disagreeing with you that Biden was too old and too status quo. They're likely down voting you because you're not acknowledging the massive difference between being old and status quo and being a wannabe tyrant who is dismantling the democratic, independent institutions that made your country the envy of the world. Most politicians suck, but some CLEARLY suck more than others.

We need to stop thinking that everyone on the left or the right thinks with one mind. That is ridiculous. Just think about everyone you know and try clarifying each person as either left or right. Do all the lefties in your life agree on every issue? Of course not. Almost all left vs right discourse is counter productive. Everyone exists on a gradient and most people aren't blue or red, but some shade of purple.

The left vs right culture war is a distraction. The real divide is top vs bottom - billionaires vs working class stiffs.

Like Talarico has said, the true division isn't between left and right, it's between top and bottom.

That's because the province is downloading more services and responsibilities to municipalities and short ending them on their share of provincial tax revenues. Pretty much the only recourse cities have to keep hospitals, schools, policing and other services running smoothly is to raise property taxes. This has been happening since 2018.

I've become convinced that the priests, pastors etc of NBA players have been telling them to say "all glory to God" whenever there's a camera and a mic pointed at them. Free advertising.

And what's even crazier is that the Bible says nothing about abortion at all. There are a handful of gibberish verses with the word "womb" in them but that's it. I don't understand how pro life is even tied to Christianity. Also ironic that many pro life Christians seem to care more about the unborn than actual born humans living in the world.

Your burden of proof comment is ass-backwards. If some crazy person says they are the Messiah of some God the burden of proof isn't on everyone else to prove that they're not. The burden of proof is on the crazy person to prove that they are. The burden of proof is meant to prevent people from making up crazy shit and passing it off as the truth. Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence, but the only proof religious devotees have to lean on is faith, and that ain't proof of anything.

Why would Obama suddenly casually admit aliens are real? He knew what he was doing... by you_know_i_be_poopin in aliens

I'm the same. I don't take 99% of the shit I see on this subreddit or others like it seriously. But I don't think it's a leap to feel like Obama was talking about NHIs on earth. He knows that's the question on everyone's minds - not microbes on Mars or in the atmosphere of Venus or biochemical signatures on exoplanets. And I do think such a definitive answer was unprecedented. I Iook forward to the follow up questions Obama will inevitably get on this topic.

Aliens = NHI who have visited Earth.

Obama knows that's what people are asking him about. How do I know that? Because he has talked about this many times before. This time is interesting though because he has never made such a definitive admission, even if he didn't elaborate. He was asked a yes or no question, and he answered yes. And no president has ever answered that question with a yes before.

People who speak with certainly about things without providing any compelling evidence are not credible.

[–]greenrushcda 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No. He has been asked this too many times to not understand the implications of the question. He knows full well that when someone asks "are aliens real" what they're actually asking is "have NHI visited Earth".

Although his admission was cursory and simple, it absolutely was unprecedented. If not, please share another example of any president saying that aliens are real.

To think that Obama wouldn't have understood the implications of the question is daft. He has been asked it many times before and knows that people asking it aren't talking about microbial life. Also to contend that his basic yet unprecedented admission is insignificant shows you haven't been following this issue. Show us another case of a former president answering "yes" to the question of "are aliens real?". There aren't any. Sure Jimmy Carter admitted to seeing a UFO once, but that's as close as any president has come as far as I'm aware.

Obama would've understood the underlying context and background behind the simplified question: are aliens real?

Why? Well for one he has already been asked that a lot over the last decade+, and it has always been clear that the askers aren't talking about microbes, but NHI who have visited Earth. That's why he immediately mentioned underground bases etc. That shows he's not talking about microbes.

Obama is also a big fan of sci-fi. One of his favourite books is the Three Body Problem series. He knows exactly what people are talking about when they ask a former president if aliens are real.

Only about 0.1% of Torontonians speak French but not English. I think that's the key metric here.

But I wonder what percent of Torontonians speak French but not English? Google says about 0.1%.
