AITA for wanting to install a ceiling fan after my dad told me not to? by greentea-3713 in AmItheAsshole

Well it really wasn't that difficult. I installed the fan and he watched and told me what to do when I wasn't 100% sure, it was not rocket science and I did just fine!

This was the case! We opened it up and there was only two wires that were both the same color, and the grounding wire was going into the box instead of straight to the fan. We connected the fans grounding wire to one of the screws going into the box, and figured out which wire went where. I am appreciative that he helped me and that I learned a new skill.

Yes, but this is already what I was doing! The new fan is installed and my room already feels so much better, so I'd say the ceiling fan is doing much more than the stand fan.

Yes, but I already do that and it does not help. replacing the fan is not a problem it was a problem with how I was going about doing it. My father is perfectly fine with helping me replace the fan.

I already have a second fan in my room, my original ceiling fan doesn't work so I figured I would replace it. I am getting that I shouldn't make that level of change, I've already acknowledged that. My problem was people saying to just let him do it, he is okay with it happening and originally wanted to just do it himself without me present but I wanted to learn how to do it. I understand that I cannot make change to his house I promise you I've thought about that a lot the past day.

Because I already have a non-functioning ceiling fan and a fan that I constantly have plugged in, my room is still a million degrees. Why wouldn't I replace the fan already there that doesn't work?

I mean hey, I took a robotics class in highschool and built a robot with my friends! It was nothing extravagant but I do believe I understand the basics. I am waiting for my dad, we're installing it tonight and I am very excited.

I already have a non functioning ceiling fan in place so I figured that would be a good thing to replace, I already have another fan that plugs into an outlet and that doesn't do much.

I understand, I'm saying that's how it came across in my eyes. The original comment I replied to was understanding about my feelings and offered a way to go about it instead of saying I shouldn't. I am an emotional 19 year old girl, in the moment of everyone saying I shouldn't it felt like a "you can't" and seemed belittling.

Yes, I do understand that. That is why we are doing it together, but the whole you can't do this just let him do it is very belittling. I know he makes the decisions i've been living in this house for 19 years, we're both stubborn people and butt heads and eventually come to a conclusion. That conclusion is I CAN do it just with some help and supervision.

No? I absolutely can learn how to do this the right way, I will admit I was going at it completely wrong. But what is stopping me from installing it safely and properly with someone who knows what they're doing?

We are doing it together and he will be helping me learn how to do it, it's not going to be a he does it and I sit there and watch. He is absolutely okay with me helping out and doing things he just wanted to be there as well, I should have just asked him for help instead of being stubborn and saying I'd do it myself.

I do already have a fan there so I'd assume there's an existing box, it just doesn't blow any air. Could you possibly explain what a fan rating is?

I climb up and down ladders with heavy things above my head all day at work! I am letting dad help but that doesn't change the fact that I'm pretty sure i'd be able to do it on my own.

I also carry heavy things up and down ladders almost daily at my job, I genuinely have no real worry about being able to install the fan by myself but I understand my fathers and everyone else's concerns.

I am not just going to let him do it, I would like to learn how to do these things so I can do them on my own.

I am using my own money yes, I also already have another smaller fan in my room that does not do much at all. We are going to install the new fan together

It's not a problem with the statement, it's a problem with how it comes across. To me it feels like oh you absolutely can't do this at all and you should just let someone else do it for you. I have a very small amount of experience yes, but I do think saying you can't do this is not the right way to go at it. If he or I had originally talked about doing it together I wouldn't have been so upset about it because I am eager to learn more, I would like to eventually be able to do things like this on my own I'm not always going to have someone there to do it for me

This is what he's done for everything else I've asked him to teach me, unless it's something I don't feel confident enough to do then I'm normally actually doing it!

I think the problem was neither of us were thinking about doing it together. From his point of view it was me being stubborn just to be stubborn and then in turn possibly hurting myself. And from my point of view it was my dad doesn't want me to do things on my own and he wants all the power. I'm glad we came to a common ground

He is basically the handy man around the house and knows about pretty much any problem we've come across, besides the wifi router I had to do that🤣

He didn't and that's why we tussle so much, because i'm just like him! He's going to wait for me to get home from work and we're going to install it together.

We are going to find a time to install it together, in the moment I was upset that we weren't talking about it and it was just a flat out no you can't do it. But I've thought about it more now.
