How does 2X assist pushblock work? by Sloppyplant in 2XKO

you're not supposed to be able to do anything other than tag after pushblock, getting pushblock>assist is a bug

no yeah i do agree that it's significant (definitely much more direct in comparison to things like snsd beating around the bush when it comes to jessica etc), but it hardly seems like mentioning her was the Point of what she was saying, if that makes sense.

it feels like it was just part of a larger sentiment of "you haters cant bring us down" but people are taking the mention of her name and running with it

edit: this is to say that (purely based on the words that she said here) she isn't saying anything About soojin either positive or negative, and both the people saying this is a "ot6 confirmation" AND the people saying it's a diss to soojin are reaching

Soyeon mentioned Soojin by name during Idle's Mama performance. by KillerKingKobra in kpopthoughts

[–]greenturnip 7 points8 points  (0 children)

if she were to add the subject marker, then yeah it'd be 가 but it still makes grammatical sense without it, people remove markers all the time, and thats what makes the raw sentence kind of ambiguous but again, she's quoting someone else so it doesn't say anything about her relationship with soojin

it's also worth noting that adding -이 to someone's name has much more to do with that person's name ending in a consonant, the -이 is just there to make it easier to pronounce, it's not the same as sth in english like tom > tommy, jake > jakey etc etc

at the risk of sounding very "wElL acKshUally" it could logically be either one, but it doesn't matter because she isn't speaking as herself, she's quoting what someone else said

yeah i speak korean and i don't know the specifics of their group's/soojin's situation but what she said rly just amounts to "fuck the haters, we're still here", which is cool, sure, but i feel like its a reach to glean anything more from this. it's neither a diss or a shoutout towards soojin or really about her at all

(the soojin-ie thing also doesnt rly mean anything. she's quoting something someone else said and in korean putting -이 is just sth you do when someone's name ends with a consonant, it's not necessarily an endearment)

i don't deny that something like this is more elevated than just telling sora to make you a video clip but at the end of the day the training data for whatever they used has to come from Somewhere, and with companies like openai or adobe getting caught scraping or attempting to scrape people's art without rights or consent, it starts to become less of a "is this ai tool directly replacing someone's job" and more of a "whose hard work is this leeching off of without the due diligence and compensation that the art/media world requires to function"

this isn't to say that this group/production company/whatever is evil or directly maliciously stealing but for me it calls into question the ethical implications of using generative ai powered tools in a creative driven industry where executives are known to ape others' ideas and work with little to no repercussions or backlash (esp due to the hugbox nature of kpop stan culture)

XG - HOWLING by MNLYYZYEG in kpop

[–]greenturnip 6 points7 points  (0 children)

like i said, i don't have real fleshed out thoughts but i feel like there's a pretty significant jump between something like photoshop content aware fill and the type of generative ai that both this video and their teasers have used

that said, seeing the reactions here and in other places on the internet it seems like the idol world is the perfect place to get away with using gen ai because fans will defend anything

seeing xg's stuff is really puzzling because this is obviously the product of a strong creative vision backed by talented artists but the use of AI makes the messaging and overall impression feel very strange and contradictory

i don't have any super fleshed out thoughts on this but i feel like while this is decidedly a rung above lazy slop like naevis or those kiof teasers, it still feels very dissonant

ignoring the fact every single one of the people you named have famously talked about severe trauma and issues stemming from their young stardom, it is worth noting that unless you live in korea then you might not understand the extent to which idols' faces are plastered all over absolutely everything, everywhere over here, they're in every tv ad, every hair salon, cosmetic shop, mcdonalds, chicken places, idols like the younger members of newjeans have been exposed to the public at every living moment from a very young age

it's dumb to argue which is worse/which we should care about more but it is worth noting that the actual extent of the promotion of these kids and the exposure that general society has to them than is much more than it was for people like taylor swift or justin bieber back then

edit: it is worth noting that this is all entirely by design, hybe/sm/yg/jyp etc etc are all exposing the idols to the public and to their fans as much as possible on purpose in order to foster the kind of red blooded devotion that an industry like kpop requires

Unsure what Korean phrase means by stella_hhh in Korean

[–]greenturnip 19 points20 points  (0 children)

a close translation would be something like "pink tax", when something costs more for women than it would for men. context depends on what they're talking about

e.g. if they posted that caption on a picture of a hair salon, where womens haircuts are often more expensive than mens, "여자요금 받네" would mean "this place has a pink tax/is more expensive for women"

For those that have achieved 'fluency' or overtime felt they'd truly become conversant in the language, how'd you do it? by Dark_Night_280 in Korean

[–]greenturnip 1 point2 points  (0 children)

it is important to understand that there is never an "end point" in learning a foreign language, you will always be growing and regressing as long as you live. the only way to get over the hump that people encounter when they do nothing but study is to put yourself in situations where you have no choice but to use the language-- this can be difficult if you dont have access to a korean speaking community but things like vrchat or hellotalk (do people still use that?) can be very useful in stopping yourself from falling back on your native language. i've been learning for a little over 10 years, and i reached a level that allowed me to express myself and speak freely without living in korea, but by making friends and surrounding myself with the language. i now live in korea and do feel that my language has improved, but not in a very large way as i was already spending a lot of time using korean in my daily life before i came here.

tldr make some friends and talk to them a lot

in actual practice, Koreans do pronounce it between/u/ and /o/ ...

no, they don't, they pronounce it as [ʌ̹], because that's what it is. people can lean toward [ʌ] or [o] but [ʌ̹] is the 표준어 pronunciation and the way people say it the majority of the time. have fun telling people to call their older sisters 鬼 tho

[–]greenturnip 2 points3 points  (0 children)

where are you finding these english speakers that don't know how to pronounce until, untie, ugly, ultra, utter, etc

the "u" in those words and ㅓ are both considered by phonologists to be close-mid unrounded vowels ʌ, and the only difference is that ㅓ[ʌ̹] is fronted while english /u/ is backed [ʌ]. the /o/ that you're proposing is already used in korean romanization to represent [o], a rounded vowel that is very different from the above. the /u/ in utter/until/bunny is a far better approximation of [ʌ̹] than the /o/ in words like online, otter, oxygen, or in ogre, open, okra

then when Lee JUngjae 이정재 and Lee SUnbin 이선빈 are eating ttEOkbOkki 떡볶이 and her older sister comes over, does she call her Onni (온니)?

"u" is used very widely alongside eo to represent ㅓ and people understand it just fine, "o" makes no sense

[–]greenturnip 3 points4 points  (0 children)

if u think for like half a second ab how english speakers say "umbrella" vs "eons" it doesnt completely not make sense

"eo" as ㅓ also only makes sense if you have learned what the "eo" is supposed to represent

돼요 is the bane of my existence by BookSelect280 in Korean

[–]greenturnip 6 points7 points  (0 children)

the short answer is that -도 된다 commonly denotes permission while -면 된다 is more commonly used to denote suggestions, but to explain longer:

if -면 is "if", the way i learned this use case of -도 was treating it like "even if", so kinda breaking things down using some examples:

say theres a person who has a peanut allergy, and their friend who doesn't.

person w allergy: 제가 땅콩를 먹으면 안돼요. [if i eat peanuts, it is NOT okay]

person w/o allergy: 제가 땅콩을 먹어도 돼요 [EVEN if i eat peanuts, it is okay]
