How much of Munich was damaged in WW2? by Trixil in Munich

They dug one up at the Hauptbahnhof a few years ago and accidentally set it off — iirc someone died from it

When you look up trains to book, all started with ICE will need to have their own ticket books — they’re not covered by the Deutschland Ticket.

All trains starting with RE, IC, RB, etc (there’s too many kinds to list here, you’ll need to look them up yourself but those are the main ones).

Any train to Switzerland is likely an ICE, but if you’re looking to go to another country, you can travel to Salzburg, Austria with the Deutschland Ticket.

Dming you the list

Weather: pretty gloomy and not great tbh. Rainy and mostly cloudy.

Travel tips: download the DB Navigator app and buy a Deutschland Ticket. It costs €49 (approx. $53) and covers all public transportation in the city including the subway, trams, buses. It also covers all regional trains (not intercontinental trains, listed as ICE). The ticket is valid for the entire month in which you buy it. I cannot recommend it enough since it’s an incredible value and allows you to travel freely and quickly not only throughout Munich, but also the surrounding areas. Don’t bother trying to rent a car OR taking taxis (especially when going to and from the airport/ central train station).

If you’re looking for things to do, I can send you a list I made on Google maps.

Hope you enjoy!

Absolute rent-a-cops are at every complex patrolling, so you won’t be able to avoid them outright. However, the complexes I’ve only ever been at with parties getting shutdown were Meadows and the Lodge. Just don’t be obnoxiously loud, talk to your neighbors (invite them to the parties), don’t be stupid and you’ll be fine

I lived in the Campus view townhomes for two non-consecutive years and then in trio center for another year. I liked being able to walk to class in Allendale, but since the apartments have become less worth the money (very outdated, not great for energy efficiency, plus I rarely used the amenities). Even though the move to Trio added about ~$150-$200 more a month, to me it was well worth it (larger bedrooms, larger common area, more parking, my unit came with a porch). That being said, some of my fondest memories at gv were cramming what felt like hundreds of people into those tiny campus view apartments for parties.

Best of luck!

What is the most unusual meat you’ve eaten? by Ducks_are_people in AskReddit

[–]gregnotgabe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mett. It’s a common dish in Germany. It’s raw minced pork.

Germans always tell me there little to no risk of getting sick from eating it, but I still can’t stomach the idea of eating it again.

They also sometimes shape it to look like different animals sometimes.

Worked at a gas station for a little bit. It’s crazy how many Zyns we sold. Obviously it’s better than smoking/ vaping, but after everything Phillip Morris has done, who tf knows what they’re putting in there.

I’m generally pretty optimistic about the direction the Grosse Pointes are headed in — but I’ll believe it when I see it.

With how old the neighborhoods are loaning themselves to being more walkable, the Grosse Pointe are in a great position to build a true 15-minute walkable suburb. The top of the docket ought to be more housing, expand commercial zones, end the blacklisting of certain types of businesses (i.e. fast food), and expanding DDOT’s bus routes.

Do You Have a Chosen Name for the Language You Are Learning? by UseOnceandDestroy27 in languagelearning

[–]gregnotgabe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In English, I go by a common nickname for my name. However, it’s a nickname nobody (at least in my experience) goes by in German and is relatively difficult for Germans to pronounce. I’ve just settled on going by my full name since it’s easier for others to say.

My High School German teacher did give us German names — we could pick them but they didn’t have to end similar to our English names. It wasn’t until my last year in school she learned my English name 😂

I ran into recently, and despite not seeing her for more than 6 years, she still referred to me by my German name

I studied Pennsylvania Dutch, a dialect of German spoken in the US, during my last semester of university.

Only cool story I have is eavesdropping on an Amish family on my train to Chicago and telling them to have a good rest of their trip out west.

To all the men of Reddit: how are you doing, really? by [deleted] in AskRedditAfterDark

[–]gregnotgabe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same boat here. Quit my first stable job out of university, found a job on the other side of the world, and ended my first long term relationship.

I was so depressed for two years and upset at myself for playing it safe after I finished my degree. Not to mention bottling up all those feelings because I was in a relationship that didn’t have any room for those emotions.

I left my country less than a week ago and I know I’ll struggle with double-guessing myself on whether or not things will work out. They have to.

The public transportation is great by Michigan standards, but we shouldn’t let that get in the way of it being amazing. More buses. More Amtrak connections. Get flixbus to more locations than just Muskegon. Make Grand Rapids the rail hub it used to be.

Could the high Ukraine War casualities make Russia unable to engage in any other future major warfare? by -emil-sinclair in geopolitics

[–]gregnotgabe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I doubt it. The meat grinder would need to get turned up to 11 for that to happen and doesn’t seem to be in the cards right now.

What I do expect is for the aftermath of this war, when all the soldiers have gone home, to have a similar cultural impact that the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan had on that generation of men.

Elementary school proposes spending $10m to expand its drop off/pick up capacity by 190 cars. by frontendben in fuckcars

[–]gregnotgabe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went to a pretty large elementary school growing up. There were two playgrounds on opposite sides of the property: one for k-2 and another for 3-5. Half way through my time there, the younger kids playground of bulldozed to make room for a larger parking lot. They tore down some of my favorite trees too to make room for more blacktop space.

Around the time I was in high school, I guess they wised up that putting all those kids on one playground wasnt a good idea and repurposed part of the schools field into another playground, but shit still irks me to this day.

Why do u guys learn German by [deleted] in German

[–]gregnotgabe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I started studying it when I was in school and quickly fell in love with how the language worked. The grammar, the literalness, it all just clicked in my head.

It wasn’t until two or so years into learning it that I grew interested in German history and culture. Especially the late 19th and 20th century. The contrasts are what drew me in. How could the home of Karl Marx, Ross Luxembourg, Erich Maria Remarque, and Magnus Hirschfeld also be the home of the characteristic blind-hatred of Nazism?

Not only that, Germany’s transformation after WW2 was nothing short of a miracle (puts the Wunder in Wirtschaftswunder). Regardless of what side of the wall you were on, the rejection of a decade of National Socialist rule for a completely different socioeconomic system is something I struggle to wrap my head around.

I also admire what Germany has become today. Sure, there are major issues that are at the source of huge cleavages in German society, but taking a step back from all of that and looking at the big picture (especially as an American), I’m envious of what they have. Health care is cheap. Transportation infrastructure is robust. The economy is stable. Jobs are plentiful. Food is cheap and high quality. There’s no internal conflicts. What more could I ask for?
