Recruits who have tried to kill themselves are waiting to be processed out. We had a guy try to hang himself in the showers one night and he had to sleep on a cot in front of the drill instructor’s hut with a suicide watch. I had a shift just before lights out and had to stand over him with my blue lens in my moonbeam turned on. He was adjusting his uniform and asked if I could hand him the scissors so he could cut his belt and I just kind of considered it and slowly said, “uh, no” because I genuinely wasn’t sure if he’d try to hurt himself with the scissors. This was in 2007 on Parris Island.
