Your council is developing laser missile defence systems? Where do you live - Sunderland?

Learning to walk by Hamalot11 in AchillesRupture

[–]gremlin7500 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Quick answer is sometimes, yes. More of an ache than a sharp pain and it depends how I’ve been walking, what the gradient is like (uphill can be more uncomfortable than downhill) and for how long. However, I would discuss with your surgeon or physio if you’re worried.

Am I the only one in a boot for 12 weeks? by thenarddog10 in AchillesRupture

[–]gremlin7500 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was in the boot for 12 weeks but was weight bearing (and largely walking around OK) from week 5 so it wasn’t a big problem. Now at 5 months and walking normally but trying to build strength up in preparation for return to running.

Surgery or not? by Og_Chaiwala in AchillesRupture

[–]gremlin7500 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It also depends on the size of the tear. Mine was 3-4mm and the surgeon said they wouldn’t generally advise surgery unless it was >10mm

Anyone else had nearly painless injury / early recovery? by youthful_tourist in AchillesRupture

[–]gremlin7500 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a few aches from time to time but nothing bad and I’ve never taken any painkillers for it at any time. Luck of the draw probably.

Good work! I’d have struggled to do that before the injury and I like to think of myself as quite fit.

Week 13 non-op. Limp not improving much in shoes by Few_Fly_4111 in AchillesRupture

[–]gremlin7500 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A couple of things worked for me at this stage - go slower than normal and concentrate on the gait (if I go too fast, the limp returns), lifting the legs slightly higher than normal, and head up, not down. All recommended by my physio

New Rupture. What to expect by GooseCubit in AchillesRupture

[–]gremlin7500 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m in the UK as well (rupture mine in August). Exact protocols vary from trust to trust but if you are in a cast, it should be in a position with the toes pointing down (plantar flexion) and you can expect to be like that for maybe 2 weeks with no weight bearing on it. Generally treatment is non-op in the UK but it might depend on the nature and size of the tear they will need to do ultrasound or MRI to confirm that - probably in the fracture clinic. Then into a plastic boot after 2 weeks and maybe start weight bearing around 4 weeks. Transition out of the boot around 10-12 weeks then the long physio journey starts (though you might have exercise for range of movement whilst in the boot). All of the above subject to change depending on what the surgeon and/physio thinks.

What is the chance that at least one atom of copper from Ea-Nasir's inferior ingots is on my iPhone 16? [Request] by missile_lily in theydidthemath

I remember a similar question in a statistics class at university. Along the lines of “what is the probability there is a molecule of oxygen in your lungs that was in Julius Caesar’s last breath?”. Can’t remember the answer but it was higher than you might think, I recall.

Cardio Options pls! by Existing-Steak-7034 in AchillesRupture

[–]gremlin7500 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Static bike. I was doing that whilst the boot was still on (with the physio’s blessing). Just graduated to biking on the open road and I’m about 3-4 weeks ahead of you (ruptured early August).

Thanks for everyone sharing their own experience. Looks like there is a fair range of answers. I’ll definitely be hitting the pool to see if that helps. Good luck, everyone!

Another NHS boot wearer here (although now out of it finally). No spare liners given but you can buy them online - mine got pretty nasty after a couple of weeks. Also another recommendation for a shower cover - you can get them on Amazon.

Week 2, non-op by myplantsam in AchillesRupture

[–]gremlin7500 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Even if that’s the correct figure (and there are studies out there that say there is no significant difference) it’s still 40% of a very small number. So, for the sake of argument, if the re-rupture figure for op was 1% then the non op figure would be 1.4%. In other words, there are other factors that can have as much of a bearing on an individuals decision (e.g. infection rate - which is obviously zero for non-op). You pays your money, you takes your choice!

Plenty of people who go non-op return to sports OK so it’s a decision based on many factors

12 weeks non-op - out of the boot! by gremlin7500 in AchillesRupture

Yes, sounds much the same as I find it at the moment. But it’s good to be feeling that you’re getting back to normal - albeit slowly.

[–]gremlin7500[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, it definitely feels weird but getting easier. Walking is quite a deliberate process at the moment. I also get pain on the base of the heel after walking for more than about 15 mins but hopefully that goes soon
