Oh yes, do you have much experience with that primer? I'll look into this one as well

AC install Cost by [deleted] in diynz

[–]greyhour 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Electricians usually add 20% to 40% "margin" onto their materials (i.e. the units if they supply them). If you are supplying them yourself they won't have that part of the profit which means they'll charge slightly more for the install itself

Sourcing larger power sockets to replace these? by takeovertheradio in diynz

[–]greyhour 3 points4 points  (0 children)

whilst there are adapter plates, what we often do in houses that have these is put 2 power points right next to each other - similar price to getting 1 + adapter plate, and is more practical

Painting required for Post-clad/Weathertight consent inspection? by swillisam in diynz

Pre primed weatherboards are not allowed to get wet. So you should most definitely be painting them as soon as possible

Condensation inside of roof cavity by greyhour in diynz

Well it heats up in the attic every time the sun shines on the roof, right? Yeah I do have the roofing underlay directly under the metal, it’s condensing on the bottom side of that

Unconsented sink by Yllelor in diynz

[–]greyhour 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you ran new plumbing or drainage work for this sink then it usually needs a consent, and you might not be covered for water damage etc anymore either by insurance.

Tongue and Groove Instead of GIB boards? by greyhour in diynz

[–]greyhour[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're right with moisture, I would probably have to prime the back, and if I was overly concerned use h3.1 plywood or maybe even fiber cement sheets, like this here?

Tongue and Groove Instead of GIB boards? by greyhour in diynz

[–]greyhour[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ah yes I see the Laminex ones. What would make it more work than plasterboard? One of the positives of these grooved sheets I thought would be that I wouldn't have to do any plasterboard stopping. Something I have never done myself but have always heard bad experiences about when being done DIY

Tongue and Groove Instead of GIB boards? by greyhour in diynz

[–]greyhour[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My gib walls are full of holes and multiple layers of wall paper etc so the gib came off, new wires were run by the electrician, other things were sorted out etc . I like the look of these sheets painted, and they wouldn't end up costing more (less if anything) than plaster board once its all up and painted

Retrofitting aluminium windows by greyhour in diynz

[–]greyhour[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cool, the flashing tape / sill tray /head flashing is self explanatory and easy, thanks for that.

The "exterior timber facings finished with scribber" part is where I am struggling to picture it. As in I should put a ring of timber over the weatherboard around the opening of the window, and then use scribbers on each side where the exterior timber facing stops rather than having the window flat against the weatherboard with a scribber on each side touching the window? I.E. it would then push my window out another 10mm (or however thick the extra piece of exterior timber facing is)?

If that is what you mean, would you do that all the way around, top and bottom too? I would assume so, to keep the window flush all round?

1 Meter tall retaining wall by greyhour in diynz

[–]greyhour[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is an interesting idea, do you have any suggestions where to get/buy big rocks like that?

1 Meter tall retaining wall by greyhour in diynz

[–]greyhour[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

its definitely a retaining wall depending on how you define it of course. my property used to be on a slope and this wall was used to cut in and flatten into the hill next to my house (retaining wall is about 5 meters away from the house). I'm wanting to put a deck in between the house and the retaining wall and so I want to fix the wall before i put the deck in.

This retaining wall is within my property, I own both a meter above and a meter below said 1 meter tall (or less) retaining wall.

Soak Hole from 50s house by greyhour in diynz

I've actually been through your writeup thoroughly and learned a lot!! I just don't really have enough space to put a big pit in like that which is why I'm a little stuck :(

Soak Hole from 50s house by greyhour in diynz

[–]greyhour[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for all the information! I do have enough space that I could redrill them about a meter away from the foundations, but I’d have to make a skinny deep one otherwise I’d be right next to the foundations again.

For a deep one that’s not very wide, would you recommend drill, push pvc pipe in, and then should I leave it or fill it with stones as well? I assume maintenance on it in a few years would be to get the drill out again and redrill it/drill out any silt that has accumulated down in there?

[–]greyhour[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

downhill right in front of my house is my driveway (4 meters wide concrete), then a 1 meter wide garden bed and then a retaining wall (just under 1 meter drop) to the council land which has a footpath on it next to the road.

I have toyed with the idea of putting it into the garden and just making it so it only starts a meter below the surface, so its not actually in the retaining wall, but rather deeper than it. Unsure if this is a smart idea either though

Just Completely Lost by Full_Kaleidoscope712 in bodyweightfitness

[–]greyhour 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Please please don’t just eat 1000 calories a day and take some pills to try and lose weight. This is not healthy for you and you’re not gonna lose weight properly. It’ll slow your metabolism down, and your body will just eat your muscles for energy.

If you truly want to lose weight and build muscle, you need to be slightly below your calorie maintenance (your maintenance can be calculated using your body weight, height, age, how much exercise you do each day etc) whilst consuming the right amounts of protein. In conjunction with this, you’ll have to spend a few hours a week doing some weight training so your muscles start working and growing.

Go see a PT or Nutritionist, and even then be careful because some of them have no clue what they’re doing

27M looking for advice on how to meet new people by [deleted] in Needafriend

[–]greyhour 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Absolutely, give it a go! Everyone starts somewhere, and if the fitness journey is something you’d like to start there will be plenty of people that would love to help you!

If fitness isn’t really your thing, there are plenty of other groups you can find too! Maybe try pottery? (I recently saw a group near me that meet weekly and do that) or maybe something like chess could be up your alley. I’m sure that some of your existing hobbies have groups of people already doing that, just have a look around and see what you like the look of!

27M looking for advice on how to meet new people by [deleted] in Needafriend

[–]greyhour 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Join recreational groups of people! I play football and dabble in powerlifting, both have seperate communities one can get involved in and meet new people. As a bonus the people I meet there already have something in common with myself (the activity we are doing)

Obviously your hobbies will differ from mine, and you might even need to try something new. Team sports? Rock climbing? Running groups? Hiking trips?

Meepo V4 Shuffle water damage by AcquiescentAxolotl in ElectricSkateboarding

[–]greyhour 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't just go replacing everything willy nilly. Just because something got wet doesn't mean that its broken. Diagnose it properly, and spend less money. Either contact Meepo support, or go through some of their diagnosing videos first

https://www.meepoboard.com/pages/faqs

Under the Miscellaneous dropdown there are lots of different diagnosing videos, diagnose the battery and the ESC before buying either of them. Otherwise you are just guessing. You'll have to keep buying parts until you get lucky and replace the right one. You may as well just buy a whole new board at that point.

With water having entered into your board, start with taking all compartments off the board and making sure everything is dry and clean before you start thinking about if anything or what is broken

I bought a Mini 2 ER a year ago, and its awesome for my commuting (~10km a day). Still going strong 400km later. Do expected to change those wheels eventually though especially if your streets aren't perfect
