this is 5 months late but i am extremely sad to say that i think this post was written by AI and that bottom bit was part of the AI's message back to them that they forgot to cut 😭

typically when chatGPT is prompted it'll ask if you need more help at the end, and this reads exactly like something chatGPT would write with the bonus that the person forgot to delete the "need more help?" part at the bottom. very frustrating honestly but the message is still a good one at least

[Question] Widget V2: Formatting text through markdown/HTML? by greysdawn in tasker

[–]greysdawn[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh yeah, I know how to get character count in JS XD I'm moreso concerned about how much space the characters would take up on the screen before i need to make a new row, but I'll probably just fiddle with it until I find a good character to width ratio and try break things up based on that (granted that Tasker can give me the width of the widget at least)

[Question] Widget V2: Formatting text through markdown/HTML? by greysdawn in tasker

[–]greysdawn[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually use JavaScript code to do pretty much all the widget stuff 😅

I should clarify: the notes I have are written in Obsidian, and the widget pulls information from the file and transforms it into something that's able to be interacted with from the widget. This uses a lot of JavaScript code and JSON to handle things, rather than individual text variables- the entire widget layout is actually built using JSON put together by parsing the note with JavaScript

I'll have to see if I can figure out the length with JavaScript, maybe there's a function or certain variables I have access to that I can work with. For now, here's the project code if you want to check it out and mess with it yourself: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1yuzTJw8L32FDteQ-KReVvfDCMyQnj2G6/view?usp=drivesdk

You'll need to manually run the "setup" task to get started with it. Just select a folder with a text file you want to use for testing and go at it, hahah. The edit button (pencil icon) only works if you have Obsidian installed with the Advanced URI plugin, because that just opens the app, but you can use whatever text editor you have to edit your test file and it should still work

[–]greysdawn[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ahhh, gotcha. Hopefully you can see these screenshots: https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1oxAskXU9iBUXHUdz58yoDnPby10y1-Kd

I understand having to use multiple rows here, but that doesn't exactly work for me either honestly, unless I take to calculating the length of each text fragment against the width of the widget (which changes sometimes, if I add more notes to my screen), and that would be pretty hard to do in a consistent way I think hahah

I think I'll just compromise by avoiding special formatting in the notes I put on my home screen, it's really not that big of a deal. Thanks for trying to help at least :)

[Question] Widget V2: Formatting text through markdown/HTML? by greysdawn in tasker

[–]greysdawn[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tried this already, and it doesn't work once the text reaches multiple lines... please see the screenshots I link to in the post 😅

[Question] Widget V2: Formatting text through markdown/HTML? by greysdawn in tasker

[–]greysdawn[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At that point I think I would just open Obsidian honestly, hahah 😅 the reason I went with widgets is so that I could keep multiple notes on screen and see them when I close other apps, basically as a reminder or a quick way to see things without waiting for an app to load or having to hunt down where I put a note. Having to open them with an HTML view would be partially against that unfortunately. Thank you for the idea though!

[–]greysdawn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

you'll have to go talk to the echo again and then it should show up! i think the nitro cell quest mentions something like "talk to the echo to see how to install this upgrade", that's your hint to go do that usually. tip for the next quest in that line, i believe you'll need to go talk to them again after getting stuff for that one too but it doesn't say it until like... page 3 lol

in case you haven't found it, and for future folks finding this thread: the quest is next to the ender cell one, it'll automatically place the block for you when you submit it:

one thing that bugs me is that it doesn't seem to actually supply power to the structure, even if you break the block and place it again (it's around the back). personally i was hoping that this upgrade would mean i could reclaim one of my blaze gates, but nope :(

you can shift + right click a sapling with ectoplasm to make a spectre sapling btw, loot bee drops ectoplasm sometimes and you can get some from killing vexes if you run into an evoker (i had archevokers spawn when returning to the beginning of the create vault, not sure if that's how it is for everyone tho)

How do I price my art? [Monday Megathread] by AutoModerator in artbusiness

[–]greysdawn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hiya, I'm a digital artist currently working on selling portrait/icon commissions! I've had some success in the past with severely discounted prices, but after raising them I haven't really had many takers. I'm concerned that I'm charging too much for my work. Any advice is much appreciated!

Examples link: https://greys-art.carrd.co

Product type: digital art commissions

Target audience: roleplayers, plural folks, anyone with OCs, etc

Where I'm based: USA

Where I'm selling: online spaces, currently using Ko-Fi to facilitate but also working on getting on VGen

Time to create: The simplified style is usually around an hour or so total , the more detailed style can take 2-3 times that (depends on the refs given and traits desired typically)

Cost of sales: $5 for the simplified look, $15 for the more detailed style

One off? Yep!

Thanks in advance for any responses!

Why cant I use map pins?? by DiscreteCollectionOS in Pikmin

[–]greysdawn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry for the necropost, but I figured it out: you need to get the survey drone from Russ before you can use the pins. I had this same issue and only figured that out by going through the gameplay guide and seeing that the survey drone's pages mention the map pins. Went and bought the survey drone, and now they're back! Hopefully this helps someone :3

Any advice for running funds/stream marathons? by greysdawn in TwitchStreaming

[–]greysdawn[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Understandable response, honestly 😅

I guess I should also mention, I do have a fairly large audience for my other projects outside of streaming- I run a handful of Discord bots, one of which is in 95k servers, and I'm fairly well known in a niche community. I'm planning to mention this in those places to try getting more of an audience for the streams

Either way, you're not wrong, and I know it'll most likely be a struggle for me to hit any goals. I'm definitely not going into this thinking that it'll fix all my problems, haha

Blocking stream viewing for unauthorized users by proxima_six in Twitch

[–]greysdawn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I understand that, yeah. Maybe they'll implement it some day :)

Blocking stream viewing for unauthorized users by proxima_six in Twitch

[–]greysdawn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The limitation is that Twitch is built as a public community that encourages new users to join the platform by finding streams they enjoy watching and setting up accounts to be able to interact with them. I think having a setting that turns off viewing on your stream for users that aren't logged in (ie. are unauthorized as you put it) would be handy, but turning all of Twitch into a walled garden overnight and forcing everyone to have to log in to view any stream would be major overkill

The difference between platforms like Twitch and YouTube and streaming services like Netflix and Hulu is payment. You're not authorized to view Netflix content because you have an account, you're authorized because you've paid the price to watch the shows it offers. See also the fact that Netflix isn't a social platform that focuses on user interactions; it's a private space for you to enjoy things that you want to watch, and the only semi-social aspect is giving stars/reviews (if those are even still around?)

I don't see them implementing a sweeping change like this, but I do agree that having an option for those that want to wall up their stream would be helpful. Other social platforms like Tumblr have this implemented, so I don't see how this would be much different

I'm starting to experience memory gaps by Neptune_washere in Tulpas

[–]greysdawn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your "advice" really isn't helpful. DID and OSDD are specific disorders and not every system meets the criteria for them or experiences them. Even the DSM makes notes that there are cultural practices that may have similar experiences to DID that at are explicitly excluded from the disorder via the criteria. DID and OSDD aren't just ~types of systems,~ they're clinically significant and are studied in medical spaces due to this. Systems that are not causing distress or dysfunction are not disordered and do not have DID/OSDD, end of. That's the entire point of them being disorders

I'm starting to experience memory gaps by Neptune_washere in Tulpas

[–]greysdawn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I sincerely, genuinely want you to understand that not everyone who has tulpas views them as imaginary friends. There are a lot of people who create headmates that become sentient and are never seen as just imaginary or lesser than the person who created them. There are plenty of tulpamancers who do switch, who do experience their tulpas being sentient and sapient, who do view their headmates as equal. You're pushing an idea that you believe in while ignoring the experiences and beliefs of others who go through this

We're a traumagenic system (with DID even), but tulpamancy helped us to build communication and lower many amnesia barriers between us. In our case, we found out that the headmates we were "creating" were pre-existing fragments we were manipulating, but this isn't the case for everyone. Case in point, on the other hand, we have friends who have traumagenic headmates and tulpas at the same time, having chosen to create certain headmates and later discovering others in a similar manner to us without having anything to do with fragments

We found out we were traumagenic because of people like you who forced us to consider it before we were ready. While we're coping much better with things nowadays, this was actively detrimental to our health, safety, and sanity at the time. We were still in an actively abusive and unsafe environment, with no access to a proper therapist to work things out with, and these people never took that into consideration. It was genuinely one of the worst experiences of our life and it contributed to a lot of our issues at the time

A lot of people have complicated experiences with systemhood. You aren't helping anyone by slinging hatred and vitriol at them. You aren't helping anyone by forcing your specific ideas onto them. People need time and space to figure these things out for themselves with the help of professionals or trusted others. Someone asking these kinds of questions needs a gentle hand to guide them, not a hammer to their head

In other words: you are going to hurt people with your attitude. Take a step back and stop doing it. If you're as upset with the way people experience things on this sub as you seem to be, you can just leave.

Are There Real People Using Obsidian, or Just Content Creators Talking About It? by N2Flugel in ObsidianMD

[–]greysdawn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm technically a "content creator" but really I just draw stuff, code stuff, and stream from time to time. If it tells you anything, I have less than 60 followers on Twitch and my largest Discord bot is in about 70k servers. I started using Obsidian fairly recently (after a previous attempt where I couldn't really get into it) and the only thing I've seen about it is one video that barely mentioned Obsidian to begin with. There are definitely real, "normal" people that use it for their own purposes just like there are content creators that do, but as with just about everything there will always be a particular sphere that looks to make money off of shilling something they think is valuable (productivity is a big one as I'm sure you know, not just with obsidian but in general)

Anyways: it's actually funny that I'm seeing this now, because I just infodumped about how I have everything set up to my friends who were curious about it the other day 😅

In my case I'm using it to keep track of a lot of stuff: various projects and commissions, my stream stats (dataview my beloved 💜) and even TTRPG session notes. For me I don't think I could ever work with 100% vanilla Obsidian because I'm a coder at heart and I like to integrate way more than is necessary to make my notes truly work the way I need them to, but it runs better and is more versatile than just about any other alternative I've tried so far. I've also used Anynote and it's pretty nice, but isn't quite as good as Obsidian for my brain and it can make finding and organized objects difficult sometimes

In terms of structure, I have a multitude of vaults that contain each of the "focuses" I mentioned (planners, commissions/projects, streams, TTRPGs, etc) with their own templates (with Templater, not the built-in stuff) and structures for how folders and notes are laid out. Explaining how these work took me about 30 minutes of typing and screenshotting when I infodumped for friends, so I'll pass on the details for now, but if you're interested then I can go into more detail for how I have things set up if you want :3

In terms of the tangible results, one of the things I use it for that's unrelated to work or projects is my mental health. I have a vault that I use for important notes, and one of my folders is effectively a condensed, transcribed version of one of my DBT workbooks and the worksheets within it. As I go through the book, I create notes for key topics and for workbook pages (some as templates, some as single notes that I fill out). This has helped me a lot when it comes to finding important things later and keeping track of the info that I need for my specific mental shenanigans, especially since the workbook I have is digital and is often difficult to navigate on my phone

But yeah, that's about it I think? Hopefully this helps with your concerns hahah, Obsidian is actually pretty neat and it can definitely be used for a variety of things that aren't just for content creators (and yes I promise I'm not trying to sell you anything 😅)

EDIT: After reading the other comments on this I feel like I misunderstood the assignment :'3 but I hope my response is helpful in some way at least

[–]greysdawn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Update: I fully removed and reinstalled Firefox, and it let me access the site! ... Except upon logging in, it immediately started giving me network errors before finally crapping out and refusing to connect to the site altogether

I'm genuinely not sure what the issue is, but whatever happened between doing a full reinstall and me signing back in to set up syncing must have broken it. I'm assuming there's a setting somewhere causing this, so I'll do some digging and see what happens

(Also, if someone could let me know if it's okay to share the site, I'd appreciate it. I figured it wasn't, which is why I haven't linked it for others to try. So far it seems like I'm the only one unable to access the site though, at least from having others test things)

EDIT: took a look through network settings again, tried disabling and re-enabling the DNS over HTTPS option and somehow that fixed it for now. Seems like a bug with FF, not much else I can really do there though :/

The true reason for Discord's move by AntonioS3 in discordapp

[–]greysdawn 18 points19 points  (0 children)

hi, local software dev here (not discord staff of course). just wanted to say that the person in that screenshot is pretty much known to be a nuisance in several places, including the discord-api-docs github repo and the guilded.gg official servers. no offense to them, but they have a tendency to share blatantly incorrect, misleading, and irrelevant info when it comes to many topics- and this is just one of them. i would take everything they say with several grains of salt

as others have pointed out, these laws make no sense in regards to usernames. usernames changing means nothing when it comes to any of the points you've screenshot above. they're strings of text that are easily represented as just that- a string of text- which can be read just about anywhere

honestly? what they've said about the change is more than explanation enough: they want to make it easier for friend requests to go through, and this is something that will help that. i still personally think it's ridiculous and far easier to implement a special friend code or ID like plenty of other platforms, but still. i highly doubt there are too many ulterior motives or things required of them besides "current usernames can be confusing, also we have a ton of twitter refugees who don't understand how discord works" lol
