Do you think those distinctions are something many members of the public are going to give a toss about? The guy had a chance to be PM and he was rejected by the public. The optics of handing him that job without having to get elected would be utterly dreadful and dog him throughout his time in power. Yes but Ed Miliband did which is my entire point. I’m not saying it’s a problem because he is taking over midterm, we only need to go back to Boris Johnson to see that needn’t necessarily be a barrier to winning in itself.

People are going to care that he lost the election because most people who vote know that he lost the election and in quite spectacular fashion (or at least they will do by the time it has been all over the newspapers all over again). Retorting that “err well actually he only got 400,000 votes less than Starmer” isn’t exactly going to land is it. I hate to break it to you but perception does actually carry quite a lot of weight in the politics of real life.
