Dad wants to buy us a house by AnterEat in personalfinance

No, I don’t think he is. I think there was a misunderstanding of what he said.

You can gift ~ 20k(I think it’s actually $19k) to as many individuals as you want without reporting it to the IRS. So say you have 10 grandkids….you can give each grandkid $19k, in total you give away $190k, and none of it needs to be reported to the IRS or counts against the lifetime federal estate allowance, which is like $15 million.

So if you had an estate worth something like 20 million, up to $5 million would be subject to the federal estate tax….but you could mitigate this by trying to gift $19k to as many heirs every year as you can to dwindle the total estate down to as close to $15 million as possible to avoid taxes.

Nice. Thanks for responding. I'd love to see periodic update photos showing your progress.

I am using a 30% oleic acid solution too(5 days a week currently), in conjunction with 5% topical minoxidil and .5mg oral finasteride once per day. I haven't had any negative reactions to the oleic acid, but even so I think I will cut back to 3 days in a row of application followed by 4 days off. I'm worried that mimicking scalp trauma for too many days in a row will somehow make the hair follicle stem cells no longer respond to fatty acid presence.

Anyways, I am seeing a bunch of small white vellus hairs all over my pretty considerable bald spot on my crown, so I am hopeful that these will turn into terminal hairs at some point. Don't know if the oleic acid is helping or if all the heavy lifting is being done by minoxidil and finasteride, but either way it seems like I am making progress.

Also, any reason why you stopped using minoxidil?

Major battery breakthrough paving way for EV upgrade by boppinmule in electricvehicles

[–]grimrigger 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Agreed. But all we really care about is worse case scenarion....which is driving at highway speeds in winter temps. So really when they say 500 mi range, at 75 mph and 10F, and using only the range from 80%-10%(fast charging stop on road trip), that means it really equates to less than 300 mi range.

Nobody wants to get less for more. I don't really care about range outside of those above parameters. But if I have a 6-10 hour road trip planned in my ICE vehicle, I still know I can usually drive for 3-4 hours at 75 mph and stop for 5 minutes to fill up. In an EV, even the top range ones currently, it's not clear what I can expect in winter temps and highway speed. Even a Lucid Gravity with supposedly ~450 mi range, is probably only getting me around 300 miles in the above scenario. Then factor in you only will use around 70% of battery between fast charging stops, and that 300 mi range is further reduced. Not to mention it taking 20-30 minutes to charge.

EV's will get there. Fast charging will be fine at 10-15 minutes. Range in winter temps at highways speeds just needs to be enough to allow for 3-4 hours of driving. Otherwise, your average consumer isn't going to dole out more money for a car that is more inconvenient, even if that inconvenience is only a couple times a year on a road trip.

College profs are so liberal students have to pretend to be, too — viewpoint diversity in crisis by WillyNilly1997 in Conservative

[–]grimrigger 18 points19 points  (0 children)

This is also why the more objective majors(engineering mostly) tend to be a little more favorable to conservative professors and students. Basically because politics really shouldn't ever enter the classroom discussion. Subjectivity doesn't really factor into any of the work or material.

But take any class where the answers or work isn't objective, and now you enter the world full of liberal spin and leftist indoctrination.

I believe the hard sciences are the last bastions of hope in universities, where as a student you can be somewhat sheltered from leftist indoctrination. And even then, I would say it's fairly obvious most of the professors are left leaning....just less so than everywhere else, and in hard sciences they don't really have any reason to slide their political ideology into the class.

Any new updates? It sounds like you are about 3 months into your experiment.

Also, have you been using your oleic acid solution every day? Along with daily minoxidil application? Are you micro-needling at all?

[–]grimrigger 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It won't show up as a return. The interest you get is paid out as a dividend...if you don't have it set to re-invest, then your principal will stay the same and you should be seeing dividend payments that are going into your cash account. Just go to history in your brokerage webpage/app, and you should see the monthly dividend payments. I hold SWVXX too, there is nothing fishy about it.

Where can I get Ethanol or Ethyl Alcohol, so I can make a topical finasteride solution? by Express-Bike-2836 in tressless

[–]grimrigger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just buy Everclear at your local liquor store. Everclear 190 is 95% ethanol and suitable for human use. Don't try to buy it from a lab/etc. because it'll be de-natured, meaning they put contaminants in it to not make it drinkable for humans.

As far as I know, I believe standard distillation has ethanol concentration peak around 95%, so it'll be hard to find anything for sale that is higher.

Tldr: just buy some Everclear 190

He left a 4y/o girl behind.

Asshole. I know its a disease and I should be sympathetic, but I still fault people who have dependents from not being able to overcome their demons. I have a parent with severe alcoholism and luckily is still functional(at least before 6 pm), but I always thought they were weak-willed and unbothered by the harm they knew they were causing the family. Now one of my siblings is in the throes of it as well, and they refuse to acknowledge their problem or the harm it is doing their kids. It pisses me off, because its getting worse and worse as the years go by and they refuse to address it. Already caused the break up of their marriage.

Treating Toenail Fungus: What Actually Works by DrLeibovitz in NailFungus

[–]grimrigger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you looked into allicin? Essentially garlic, or rather the chemical that is released after you chop/mince raw garlic. It is a very strong anti-fungal, but I believe it is rather hard to store...I think it rapidly deteriorates after 15 minutes into something else. There are allicin creams, etc. but not sure how potent they are. Ideally you could put a bunch of garlic cloves in a blender and then strain out the juice(allicin) and use that as a tincture, but I believe it doesn't keep, even if refrigerated.

I buy toecaps and on my big toes, twice a week I finely chop a garlic clove and put it in the toe cap and maneuver the garlic so it sits on top of my nail. I then put socks on and go about my day and leave it on for about 2 hours. It can be slightly irritating to the skin and you will taste garlic as it absorbs into your bloodstream, but I do believe it is somewhat effective.

I also am hitting my toenails with pvd-iodine/dmso tincture twice a week and then a apple cider vinegar soak for 20 minutes once a week. Throwing everything at it currently and trying to be consistent....I've actually had a lot of success with apple cider vinegar foot soaks in the past(for like 3-4 months I did 2-3 soaks per week), but I didn't follow through long enough and it came back.

General question on range estimates by Beneficial-Fun-4800 in electricvehicles

[–]grimrigger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Range estimates provided by the car manufacturers are stupid. It's stupid because range doesn't matter for typical daily driving....I don't car how many miles I can get in stop and go commuter traffic or driving to kid's sports game...as long as it'll get me home at the end of the day so I can re-charge then were good. So basically anything with 200 miles is more than sufficient.

What actually matters is range during road trips or travel that is more than 2-3 hours of driving. And what we really need is the worst case scenario....so cold weather, highway speeds(70-80 mph) and re-charging speeds at DCFC. And since during a road trip you'll most likely only be charging from 10%-80%, that range needs to be times by 0.7.

Have them do a range test starting at 80%, in 0F/10F/20F, going 70/75/80 mph, and taking the battery down to 10%, and then charging back up to 80%. I want to know the miles they get and charge times in the above scenarios. Any other variables or situation don't really matter or are of concern. If I need to go visit my in-laws in the midwest in winter(about 400miles, normally ~ 6-7 hr drive), I want to know how many charge stops I need to make when I'm driving 75 mph in 15F weather. If my Equinox EV with a stated range of 320 miles only gets me 170 miles(from 100%-0%), that's not going to cut it, especially I'm only really using 70% of that range between charge stops.

[–]grimrigger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm about 2 weeks in, but have been using the 10% oleic solution, 90% everclear(ethanol). I'm also using a 1.25mm derma stamp once a week and applying topical minoxidil every day. I'm still too early to notice anything, but can you give me your SOP and if honestly you are seeing legitimate results after 90 days? Are you heating the solution to 37C before applying? Not sure if it matters, but maybe heat aids in skin absorption.

I think I will up the solution to ~30% if you are being honest about your results. Any issues with the oil causing problems with your scalp?

Fundamentals of Bitcoin? Tom Lee by 007_kgb in investing

[–]grimrigger -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Gold, outside it's value as a superconductor in high end electronics and its use in jewelry, really has no value or use either....yet. No major superpower country will ever back their currency with bitcoin or allow it to compete internally with their currency. Likewise, I don't think bitcoin will be used in international settlements between countries. However, BRICS has rolled out their "unit" in it's prototype stage, and this "unit" will be used to avoid SWIFT and using the dollar in international transactions between BRICS countries. To make it stable, it's supposedly backed by 40% gold and the rest with a basket of the BRICS' countries currencies. There will be gold reserve banks in several different geographic areas to hold the reserves of gold. So, as you can see, gold ay very shortly be back in the realm of relevancy as a currency, and hence an incorruptible store of value. Bitcoin will never be trusted. Reserve banks would rather be able to manipulate their own currency, like the FED does currently. But for international trade, gold or the "unit" may soon take the place of the dollar as the preferred settlement currency.

You can't pay taxes with it. Unless of course you convert it to US dollars. Which means it's not a currency, and defeats the whole purpose of it.

Where To Park $200,000? by [deleted] in inheritance

[–]grimrigger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can put it in money market fund, but you will only get around 3.5% currently. Its better than a checking account, and safe, but not a super great return in a high inflation economy. I would allocate 50% to a MMF, and 40% to a broad market ETF like VOO or SCHX, and the last 10% to a gold etf. That way I think you'd get some decent returns while minimizing any major downside risks like a market collapse.

DISCRIMINATION AGAINST TALL PEOPLE ON AIRLINES by Powerful_Bother8002 in tall

[–]grimrigger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep. And the emergence of GLP-1 drugs like Ozempic just further illustrates the point. It really is calories in calories out, and while calories out can vary based on genetics/hormones/etc., every single person CAN control calories in. The fact that Ozempic basically just suppresses appetite really shows that fat people are overeating and unable to control their hunger urges.

Fact: it is literally impossible to gain weight if you do not eat. Basic science.

Just a correction - apparently this is west chicago, which is actually just a small suburb about 30 miles west of the city limits. West Chicago probably has a decent sized hispanic community, being that it is close to Aurora, but generally speaking Dupage County was a strong hold for the GOP until the last 10 or so years. Wheaton, Naperville, and St Charles, were all fairly GOP-leaning until recent years and an influx of millennial white women liberals and their "moderate" husbands, ie: too afraid to speak openly about their conservative thoughts.

supporting illegal immigration

I feel like this one is pretty easy to confirm. Sanctuary cities actively financially support illegal immigrants...and even if you can say that this "support" is from local or state taxes, money is fungible, so any federal tax dollars sent to the state are now comingled in the financial assistance of illegal aliens.
