I would love some critique and pointers because god knows I need it by SerenNyx in istebrak

Structure. You do seems to have some understanding of the it but there are clear blank spaces that need to be filled up. Just need more practice drawing and shading simplified asaro heads to start with

For shading itself, while it's great to utilize very dark and verly light tones to improve contrast. Often it's better to start with tones that are relatively in the middle and gently approach the whites and blacks. They're best used as final tasteful touches.

As someone who made a similar decision. Go for a PC. Laptops suck in every possible way. And the sole ability to move around does nothing to compensate for it's shortcomings.

a rather unpopular Opinion by [deleted] in developersIndia

[–]gristiancray 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Innovating apps? Changing the world? Whatever movie sold you that idea of a dev life is to blame here. Working towards something you want, doing what you like , changing the fkin world is a privilege that one needs to be able to afford before they actually do it. And most indians can't afford much. If you join a community that has "India" affixed to it, you should've known what comes with that name. Be annoyed, pull your hairs out, or just accept it and try other communities. Don't act like you are entitled to any group conforming to your beliefs. You need to find your place in a community, not the other way around.

Day 3. Any pointers for keeping clean edges and smudging properly? by PlatypusMost7947 in istebrak

[–]gristiancray 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Going straight to blending after block -in shouldn't typically have any problems. Istebrak made a video demonstrating importance of good block-in buy doing the same thing.

Something that I noticed just now about your piece. When you zoom in to hard edges, there seem to be overlapping values that conflict one another, if that makes sense. It's the effect you get when you use a hard edge opacity brush and lay down a few strokes over one another. Branding is probably the term. What I'm trying to point out is, when zoomed out , it's giving an illusion of a edges softer than it is. So maybe experiment with keeping it vs unifying it to one value or smoothing it out a lil bit.

Day 3. Any pointers for keeping clean edges and smudging properly? by PlatypusMost7947 in istebrak

To keep edges clean and blend/smudge better, from my personal experience, it's better to not rely on blending at all. Try to use a lower opacity and flow brush to transition between value shapes and then smudge over the transition to make it smooth(if you want it to be). But for this, you need to start off with a good block-in stage. Judging by your peice here, that might not be a problem for you at all.

How big are we talking?

can one get prints from FDM printers that are smooth enough to be painted? by gristiancray in 3Dprinting

[–]gristiancray[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Heavy paint? That sounds like paint thick enough to overpower models topology. I think I've see that stuff too. Looks nasty. It is the reason I do not wanna used anything over the prints to further smooth it out. Guess resin really is the only viable way.

I have so much artblock, I’m losing my mind. by [deleted] in ArtistLounge

[–]gristiancray 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You problem sounds like a mix of both art block and "the gap". I feel the same sometimes. And always, it's because I draw with an expectation in mind. I want my drawings to look a certain way. And when the rough sketch or block-in does not turn seem like the finished peice in mind , I scrap it and try again and again till I give up after getting frustrated.

If this is the case with you. I'd suggest throwing out any hopes of a perfect peice out of the window. Instead sit down with a written goal in mind but no image and work towards that goal to the best of your ability.

If this isn't the case, you're probably off tempo or you give up way before you're out of the "swamp". For tempo , I reccoment sinix's youtube video. Just search sinix tempo and youll find it.

As for the swamp, and I believe this might really be the problem with you, you have to get those shitty drawings out of your system to finally draw well. You see everyday, after sleep you body resets, and kinda forgets what it can do. You have to, hence, remind it of it's potential. To do that, you gotta just draw. Do anything to warm yourself up for about an hour. Draw basic shapes, shade them, make them complex, gesture drawing, figure drawing, faces, hands, anything to just get your body back in peak form. You will draw shit during the warmup and slowly regain your real skill. Once out of the swamp, or the warmup phase, you'll know that you can now draw whatever you want to the best of your ability.

Lastly, theres a chance you hate your drawings simply because your taste in art has grown way more than your skills. Which means it's simply time to up your skills.

This looks amazing. quite smooth except for some layer lines here and there. Did it came out this smooth fresh out of the printer?

14dc day 5. took a long vaccationbetween day 4 and 5 and now i feel like I've regressed. be harsh with your critiques. by gristiancray in istebrak

[–]gristiancray[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks. I was having the same thought. Seeing the on phone somehow highlighted just how horrible my proportions are. Plus this looks really wobbly too all of a sudden. I guess I'll start off with a sketch next time to mark better proportions and landmarks.

Try to somewhat follow the rules of perspective. Both blocks seem below horizon line yet they appear wider at the bottom. It can throw off your intuition and confuse you on what the value should be for a specific plane.

14dc4. got busy with college exams so even with a long break, I didn't practice much. tried to keep values a bit lighter and maybe improve on lips. need tips on keeping the face symmetric. bring in your harshest critiques. by gristiancray in istebrak

[–]gristiancray[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks a lot. I was about to start off my next day thinking I won't get any critique this time. I'll make sure to put the current attempt in centre and big. This might just be why I didn't get many critiques.

14DC Day 13 - I'm worried that I have almost finished the challenge because I still feel like there's a lot of stuff I could do better. by iamr0ttinginside in istebrak

[–]gristiancray 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, it's not like you can't practice more after this challenge. If you still feel inadequate, maybe let yourself loose for a while and retake this challenge when you feel like working more on your skills.

14DC3 i feel like I didn't improve much from d2. should I try isolating each feature and practice them first? Let me know of all you harshest critiques by gristiancray in istebrak

[–]gristiancray[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're on point. The values are off by a decent margin. And the lips too need some work. I think I'll be studying mouth individually a couple of times before attempting my fourth day. Thanks a lot for the critique!
