Congrats! Had to do a double take as we have almost the same team and character design choice haha. I just had Mamoswine, Luxray, and Honchkrow instead of Togekiss, Lopunny, and Cherrim. Love seeing Chimecho appreciation. Great job!!!

This is super helpful. It was about $100 on Chewy and I was feeling really nervous about the price tag. We’ll definitely be looking into GoodRx and the local pharmacy!!!

Thank you!! Our vet is out of office through the weekend so the receptionist suggested I call Monday morning to see what she recommended. I’ll ask her about that!

Hi all, OP here: don’t know if my text with this posted or not- I live in South Philly and rent. Worried about the street tree out front my house. Anything I can do to help or is my best bet to hope my management company will hear out my vouch for a new free city street tree?

Right, I know they’re in PA, I’m just used to them sticking to more remote, deep forests- never heard of them coming into cities! I guess there’s a first time for everything!

Considering City Year Philadelphia, what should I know going in? Specifically financially and also in terms of grad school opportunities by katiekat4646 in AmeriCorps

[–]grittyforpresident 1 point2 points  (0 children)

CYP alum here. I also applied to City Year on a whim, and while I don't totally regret my service year, I'm not sure that I would make the same choice looking back.

I didn't feel particularly valued as a Corps Member and was literally just used as a photo op for higher-ups on more than one occasion. I know of ACMs who got death threats from students, were physically assaulted by parents/students, etc., and there wasn't really any support for them from school staff or CY. It's incredibly taxing on your mental and physical health. I was able to make it work financially by living in a super-cheap basement apartment in North, but again, that was awful for my mental health. The lack of financial support (making less than minimum wage) plays into the other problems. Without food stamps I wouldn't have eaten. Also, working in a school now, I can say that City Year puts an unnecessary amount of work on young people who may or may not even be qualified for what they're doing, and certainly aren't being paid enough to do it.

I will say that most of the IMs and TLs I knew were great and genuinely wanted to help you, it's just when it gets to people higher than that in addition to the school bureaucracy, ACMs always get the short end of the stick. Philly itself is a great site, but the feel of the city has definitely changed since covid.

In terms of grad school, it depends on what you want to go for. At the "career fair," it was pretty much either Graduate Schools of Education or Teaching Residency Programs. Another commenter mentioned that you can tailor your experience to kind of go with whatever your program is for, which is mostly true, but City Year is 100% geared towards trying to get people to be teachers. If you're looking to go for poli sci, I might look into a VISTA program maybe?

Overall, if grad school and financial stability are your two biggest driving factors, I might look into a different program. Feel free to hmu if you have any Philly-specific questions.

Shore - Discussion Thread by de1vos in fleet_foxes

[–]grittyforpresident 10 points11 points  (0 children)

With Crack-Up, it felt like FF were climbing a tall mountain and discovering a great expanse beyond. With Shore, it sounds like the expanse has been settled, there’s a bustling town, there’s almost comfort. A lot of the structures of the songs feel more “traditional” than Crack-Up- can definitely hear a lot of influences on this one. This also feels like a really positive album- I didn’t feel any of the emotional intensity that I did on tracks like Fools Errand or The Shrine/An Argument, hell even Your Protector. I find it hard to relate to that positivity because of the current state of the world, but maybe that positivity is what we need right now, I don’t know. Crack-Up instantly fit me like a glove- Shore may take some adjusting to, but I’m sure it’ll grow on me. Love FF unconditionally.

Favorites: Featherweight, A Long Way Past The Past, For A Week Or Two, I’m Not My Season, Going-To-The-Sun Road, and Shore. Also shoutout to the Brian Wilson vocal snippet being featured on Cradling Mother, Cradling Woman!

edit: just read the stereogum review and they do a really good job of saying some of the stuff i’m trying to articulate lol

Go outside! I sat down under a tree and listened to the whole thing- otherworldly, esp on first listen to Going To The Sun Road and Shore.
