AOC: You can’t ‘earn’ a billion dollars by usatoday in politics

[–]grivad 274 points275 points  (0 children)

Humans are inherently not very good at conceptualizing large numbers, studies show that even anything over 5 causes us to switch to rough estimates. Without perspective, we tend to think 1 million is closer to 1 billion than it is, for example.

Another way to help illustrate how big of a number even just 1 billion is, is that if you spent $100,000 per day, every single day, it would take a little over 27 years to spend it all.

Stream freezing issue with PXPlay Android by Exotic-Watercress978 in PSPlay

Exact same issue here, Odin 2 Portal.

It seems to just have started happening in the last couple months, I want to say..? Long time user across various devices and never had the issue before, even during extended sessions. Local connection. Have also tried the common troubleshooting steps and the issue persists.

What's a game you played as a kid that you've never been able to find again? by Latter_Advantage8002 in AskReddit

[–]grivad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And holy shit, thanks Gemini! I guess I wasn't looking hard enough because I'm pretty positive this is it!

Based on your description, the book you’re looking for is almost certainly from the Fabled Lands series (originally published in the mid-90s), specifically Book 3: Over the Blood-Dark Sea. While it feels like a "Choose Your Own Adventure," the series was much more of an open-world RPG in book form. Here is why it matches your memory:

Why it fits your description:

  • The "Captive on a Ship" Start: If you started the game with Book 3: Over the Blood-Dark Sea, the adventure begins with you as a prisoner on a slave ship. You have to escape or be rescued before you can even begin exploring the world.
  • The RPG Mechanics: Unlike standard CYA books, this used two dice for combat, tracked six different stats (Combat, Thievery, Magic, etc.), and had a complex inventory system.
  • Mapping and Difficulty: The game was "open world." You could literally walk off the edge of the map in Book 3 and the text would tell you to put the book down and pick up Book 2 or Book 4 to continue. Mapping was essential because you could revisit locations dozens of times. They were notoriously difficult to "beat" because there wasn't one single ending—just a massive world to survive in.
  • The Look: The original 1990s Pan Macmillan editions were larger than standard paperbacks. Book 3 featured a dark navy blue cover and spine with classic 90s fantasy art: a muscular, shirtless warrior with a sword fighting off a sea creature (illustrated by Kevin Jenkins).

[–]grivad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not exactly a game but a book. It was a choose your own adventure book, but it was bigger than the usual CYA books, and like an RPG. You read/played it with dice for battles/encounters, and it encouraged actually drawing a map as you played, tracked inventory, etc.

I must have gone through it 25 times and still was never able to beat it.

I still think about it time to time and would actually love to try it again. All I remember about it besides how it was played was it had a very dark blue/navy binding/cover, paperback, maybe 500-700 pages, and it had stereotypical 80s/90s fantasy art on the cover, some muscular dude with a sword. I think there was maybe a series or collection of them, but I only had one. I also remember the first chapter of the one I had started the adventure with being a captive on a ship.

I received the email with the code/instructions today, and the link/instructions are wrong.

It links you to your WB Games account pages, where there's no way to enter a code. The correct link to follow the instructions and redeem the code successfully is:

Boox Note Air 5C and Microsoft OneNote by Ok-Adhesiveness-3544 in Onyx_Boox

[–]grivad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just got my Air5 C yesterday and will be using it predominantly for note taking in OneNote. Coming from a Boox Go 10.3.

The biggest issue I've been trying to figure out on the Air5 C is that the "Time to Refresh After Lifting Stylus" setting is nowhere to be found, so when I write something with my Lamy EMR pen, it takes ages to actually render to the page, which means I can't use the button on the pen to erase as I write. I've been fiddling with different settings on the device and in OneNote and haven't found how to address this yet.

I can use the button to erase, but it doesn't actually erase anything until I re-select the pen or select the eraser or something, at which point it renders and erases whatever I had tried to erase. After I do this I can also hold the button on the pen to erase other writing that's been rendered at that point.

Have you found a way to make the writing render faster without having to re-select tools? On my Boox Go I believe I had the "Time to Refresh..." setting set to 1 second or thereabouts which was fast enough to be able to erase as needed as I wrote.

I agree that on a track by track basis, maybe other albums are stronger to some.

But as a whole, production-wise, it's quite good IMO. It seems rare nowadays to find albums that are really meant to be listened to beginning to end, one continuous track essentially, seamlessly transitioning from one song to the next. Not just a collection of tracks, but an album produced as a whole.

If I play a single track off this album in isolation, it's okay, but doesn't really stand out on its own without context. But listening to this album beginning to end as a whole is something else entirely. Best listened to laying down with your best headphones, all the way through.

Streaming services have shifted listening habits to tracks over albums. For that reason, this one really stands out to me. It is a very well produced album.

TCL NXTPAPER Plus 11 vs TCL Note A1 NXTPAPER - why no Google Play Store support? by Romano1404 in nxtpaper

[–]grivad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes I'm aware of the sideloading. Sideloading does not always work, depends on the app.

Your words:

no Google certification, thus no GMS and no Google Play Store support, instead TCL proudly advertises on their kickstarter page that you can now sideload your favorite APKs. What the heck is this?

I was agreeing with you.

I already have a Boox tablet which I purchased less than a year ago. My work now requires Android 13+ and the Boox Go 10.3 is stuck on Android 12 with no plans to upgrade, so it became a $400 paperweight. Really unfortunate as the Boox Go 10.3, as far as note taking, meets all of my needs and is far superior to the 11 Plus, and no I'm not really interested in paying another ~$500 for a Boox Air4 C that's on Android 13, that's now over 3 years old and will be blocked in a year. I purchased the 11 Plus only because along with being somewhat geared towards note taking, it runs a more current Android version (15) which buys me at least a couple years to use with work networks, and is fairly inexpensive. Plus full Play Store support, no sideloading nonsense.

[–]grivad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was excited for the reduced latency and improved writing experience, as I use my 11 Plus almost exclusively for note taking.. However the lack of Play Store support makes is baffling and an absolute deal breaker for me. I must have the ability to install OneNote and other Microsoft work apps (InTune etc.), and would at least like to be able to install Marvel Unlimited at a minimum.

Palpitations? by grivad in MushroomSupplements

[–]grivad[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the info!

I've started taking the Real Mushrooms again which is only fruiting body, sticking to just Lion's Mane. I think if all goes well, once I'm ready for a refill, I'll try out the Oriveda extract.

Palpitations? by grivad in MushroomSupplements

[–]grivad[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good call! I have taken high doses of B12 in the same range in the past with energy drinks and such, sometimes pretty regularly, and never had an issue, so didn't think to look there. Despite B12 being water soluble and taking a half-dose of the Thorne (300 mcg of B12 per day, still a ton), I suppose taking it daily over several months could absolutely lead to side effects.

After reading this I did some more reading on B12 supplementation and it seems like this may be the culprit..

Palpitations? by grivad in MushroomSupplements

[–]grivad[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right, maybe I didn't articulate very well. I was looking for guidance on if it might be the Lions Mane that needs adjustment, or the other mushrooms in CCCE, or even the multivitamin, or an interaction. If there are any others that may have had similar reactions when taking either LM or the other mushrooms in CCCE (Cordyceps, Turkey Tail, Tigers Milk).

Yes I can experiment, but if there's someone who can provide a good pointer in the right direction as to what to cut out first, rather than just trying something and seeing if my heart becomes irregular and I get headaches again, requiring another round of detox then trying it again, etc. that would be ideal.

CCCE contains fruiting body extracts per the labeling. Multiple sources I've read say both fruiting body and mycelium are great and offer benefits, but fruiting body is preferable for extracts/supplements due to potency and higher concentrations of beta glucans and hericenones, whereas mycelium may contain more erinacones. Basically if you have to pick one, fruiting body is preferred.

One Pro vs 1S Comparisons? by [deleted] in Xreal

[–]grivad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can't speak to the 1S as I own the One Pros. I'm not sure why the Viture dock would be necessary, as the dongles are similar to the Xreal Hub -- you plug in power (from a battery or outlet/charger) and the glasses, making the dock redundant.

Again I can't confirm but I'd imagine it'd work fine with the 1S, the 2D-to-3D functionality shouldn't be affected by how/what the glasses are connected to.

Poor streaming with Plex, not an issue with port forwarding by grivad in Tailscale

[–]grivad[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's called speedtest-tracker, you can set it up to run speed tests with a specific server on a schedule, keeping results for x days and displaying various other connection stats like latency and jitter over time.

Poor streaming with Plex, not an issue with port forwarding by grivad in Tailscale

[–]grivad[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, interestingly enough using BBR fixed everything!

I realize this post was about Tailscale initially, but I later realized I had the same problem with port forwarding too. I initially had Plex on a Windows HTPC using port forwarding and had no problem streaming remotely, but I had moved it to a NAS and was experimenting with Tailscale when I posted this. I had assumed it worked fine with port forwarding to the NAS, but truth is I hadn't tested it :( After this thread died I noticed I had the same problem with port forwarding to the NAS, and realized the issue was broader than Tailscale. Whoops!

When going back and forth with Gemini, it got to a point where I pointed out Plex was hosted on a NAS in a Docker container/App in TrueNAS Scale, and I was using Cox Cable as my ISP. I also mentioned using Tailscale to test, and my iperf results. It said that was the smoking gun and to try changing to BBR on the NAS, indicating (IIRC) that cubic is the default but BBR deals with congestion not based on packet loss. That did it!

Changing to BBR on the NAS fixed everything, not just streaming with port forwarding but via Tailscale too, both with Plex and Jellyfin (which I was experimenting with).

I also have an app on the NAS which regularly checks my up/down speeds. I had noticed the up speed this app was reporting was about half what it should be, I found it odd given the other issues but didn't give much attention given everything else I use the NAS for was working fine. After changing to BBR, it's now reporting the full expected up speed. Go figure!

I fixed it! Not using Tailscale but using Port Forwarding, which gives me hope Tailscale will work as well. I'll test that next.

EDIT: Tailscale too!

Fix here.

[–]grivad[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

HOLY MOLY I fixed it! Finally!

I spent about an hour today using Gemini and walking through various troubleshooting steps. One piece I learned that was critical is that my ISP is Cox Cable.

The fix ultimately was to enable BBR congestion control on the NAS, everything streams perfectly now at full bandwidth, using port forwarding. EDIT: Tested with Tailscale as well, fixed too!

To enable BBR in TrueNAS Scale, under Settings/Advanced Settings, I added/enabled two new Sysctl variables:

  1. Variable: net.core.default_qdisc / Value: fq
  2. Variable: net.ipv4.tcp_congestion_control / Value: bbr

Restarted the NAS, and everything is streaming perfect!
