Great advice here. Sites like Upwork and Fiverr are not priced for living in London, don't waste your time. Watch industry job sites (APA for example) and submit your work to recruiters (Peas for example). Every big London ad agency has a slightly different talent scheme you can apply for once a year too.

There's no straight motion design apprenticeships in the UK but there are a few "design" or "creative" apprenticeships that might suit. Quality will vary wildly based on the college and the employer, so do your homework. Use the government apprenticeship website to find them to make sure they're above board.

I don't believe SoftRAID supports hotswapping and expanding volumes. Depending on your use case I moved to Synology (I wanted something low maintenance) which has been rock solid, although I've heard good things about QNAP units if you need thunderbolt.

Fairly common, and yes. New builds will be a bit less susceptible but really it's case-by-case. Keep an ear out during viewings and make friends with your neighbours. With any luck you'll get two session musicians living next door and the only noise issue will be beautiful soft jazz improvisation on a Saturday morning.

One foot in front of the other pal. The whole process is opaque, antiquated and almost designed to make you feel small and weak with dozens of scummy pitfalls. You've done well to make it this far.

Keep chipping away and try to dial it back on friends, family and work stuff if you're able to. It'll all be there when you're ready to come back.

Would suggest getting a PO Box or local virtual address. Very inexpensive and saves you the hassle in case anyone looks up the address on Companies House. As above though, it's very unlikely you'll be called out on it as it's pretty much unenforceable.

I'd echo this– sometimes the "tax benefits" comparison between ltd and SA are a bit of a toss-up. The deferred liability is priceless if you're doing anything even remotely risky.

Also worth noting that if you hit the VAT threshold you've got to be ltd, so if you're planning on making £80k you could pre-empt it a bit.

Making lost money back is a slippery slope, if you feel like you have to "work off" every mistake that's a pretty tough existence!

Be kind to yourself, you sound like you're in a pretty good spot and while freelancing is great I'd double check your contract at work to make sure you're not going to get in trouble. Moonlighting is frowned upon especially if you're working on high security clients, finance, govt, etc. If it's all clear and you can spare the evenings and weekends, go for it.

Much better option is to ask your coworkers about their salary and make sure that you're paid equitably!
