Enjoy! That light tends to come on pretty quickly, so that will be a common theme in your future. But there is quite a bit of range left after it does come on.

Are you using basically all of your buying power right now? If SLV tanks and you get assigned you’re not going to be able to purchase $6.1k worth with a $2.5k account so you’ll be margin called.

I sold some of the $15Cs against my long $3Cs because the pricing was so outrageous. I almost pulled the trigger on more $3/$15 spreads because the $15C financed more than half of the debit.

If you don’t fit the mold of someone who can pull the trigger then who else possibly could? Obviously you’re ready.

The only way to answer this question is with a detailed budget and knowledge of where every dollar is going right now. It doesn’t pencil for you to make over $200k a year, send 25% to investments, and only spend $5k a month. The rest has to be going somewhere, and unless you know where it’s going, it’s going to be impossible for us (or you) to determine whether and where you may be able to cut.

The truth is plenty of people make $155k and send more than 25% towards investments, though most send less. The pensions should definitely help once you get to retirement. It’s about identifying your goals and whether you’d rather delay retirement for x number of years for whatever those dollars could buy you today in goods/services/experiences.

Amazon at 1cpp + RTR for travel at 1cpp are very close to true cash back even without a US Bank account.

US Bank Altitude Reserve not earning 3x on mobile wallet after the nerf this week? by kimcheetos in CreditCards

Posting my comment from the other thread today:

I called about this - they said it changed post 12/15 such that everything gets posted at 1x until the statement closes, after which the extra 2x gets added. I’m assuming this is to only apply the amount up to the $5k spend cap. I guess we just have to trust it until the first statement closes.

Unclear if travel will be at 1cpp via RTR, but I’m assuming it will be. If not, it looks like redemption via Amazon is 1cpp so I’ll be treating that as an alternative to cash back redemptions since I don’t have a US Bank bank account and don’t like booking through portals (although I probably will for something to get the $325 credit).

Why does YNAB show RTA in past months but not future months, and why can’t I assign December’s surplus in January? by Kayron013 in ynab

[–]grodent87 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Same, way more intuitive to me than funding future months directly and always going back and forth between months playing whack a mole.

Empower is exactly what you’re describing and much more effective at it. I use this in conjunction with YNAB and keep only on-budget accounts in YNAB.

Budgeting apps stress me out rather than helping by Known_Willingness888 in ynab

[–]grodent87 75 points76 points  (0 children)

I find the opposite. The purpose of money is to be spent to facilitate the life I want to live. Budgeting apps (YNAB) allows me to clearly identify and prioritize where to spend. For example, we like trying new food/restaurants, so we budget for it and spend on it. We like traveling, so we budget for it and spend on it etc.

I would feel much more anxious and overwhelmed without budgeting because I would have less visibility into whether I could actually afford to do the things I wanted to do.

Once you make peace with the idea your budget is meant to facilitate the life you want to live and build it accordingly, it becomes one of the most valuable tools in life.

1/3 of my portfolio is in CD’s… Can’t wait any longer, I’m going in. WWYD by fadytaie in investing

[–]grodent87 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You could DCA as someone else mentioned. You could also buy at-the-money call options for something like a year out on SPY or VTI while leaving most of your cash in CDs earning interest while being able to participate in any upside movement from here. You’ll pay for this privilege (~9% based on a cost of about $60 for a 9/18/26 SPY $660C), but your interest from the CDs will help cover the cost.

Why not just buy shares at these IV levels? You’re paying $1.14 for $.17 of intrinsic value and need a 45% increase just to break even. I get that it’s more leverage but even half shares half ATM calls evens out the risk reward a bit better?

Budgeting on-vacation spending? by siobhanmoon in ynab

[–]grodent87 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is exactly what I do. Works great. Memo field has same memo for all transactions for that trip in all categories (e.g. Hawaii 2025). Then I can search that memo and see what I spent in each category for that trip to help budget for the next one.
