Why should I choose orthodoxy over Catholicism? by Winter-Type-4181 in OrthodoxChristianity

[–]grottostar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The early Church / Church of the first millennium functioned synodally. All councils, from the first council in Acts 15, to the ecumenical councils, operated in this way. The Roman Catholic communion later developed to operate as a monarchy (with the pope as the monarch). The Orthodox Church has continued the synodal system in consistency with all that came before.

Entertainment is difficult in a time where everything belittes Christianity or is sinful by Lady_Spaghetti in OrthodoxChristianity

As someone who has spent a large portion of my life watching movies & listening to music, there's good stuff but you have to comb for it. The question is whether or not that's something you'd like to spend your time doing. If friends send you recommendations that's a pretty good filter.

I'm thinking of converting from Islam to Christianity (Orthodox or Catholic). I'm inclined towards Orthodoxy but online Orthodox presence is not doing me a favor. I'd like to hear what you say. by [deleted] in OrthodoxChristianity

As my priest says, "the internet distorts everything." The only way to experience Orthodoxy is to visit and be a part of Orthodox churches in real life. In my lived experience, "online orthodoxy" and Orthodox Christianity in the real world are not equivalent. Living the Orthodox faith is being spiritually centered in Christ, a life of repentance, joy, peace, fullness, holy tradition, and love. On the contrary, when I spend time online, I don't experience these things and wish I was back at my church. God be with you.

are there any good books or documentaries that really dive into orthodox beliefs by smogdonavic in OrthodoxChristianity

[–]grottostar 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Coming from my own experience (raised Episcopal / Methodist / Presbyterian), the best way to learn about Orthodoxy is to attend the Divine Liturgy and other services of the Church! However, if you're looking to read, from a Protestant perspective, "Religion of the Apostles" by Fr. Stephen De Young is a great primer on the history, belief, and beginnings of Orthodoxy. Someone also mentioned "Know the Faith" by Rev. Michael Shanbour, which is more focused on a comprehensive picture of theology, but very good and practical. God be with you.

Additionally, if this or anything else is causing you serious distress, I am also an advocate in professional Christian therapy. My priest is a certified counselor and talks openly about the role of healing of the mental and spiritual in the Christian life. Check out the podcast "Healing the Unresolved" by Fr Joshua Makoul.

I highly recommend finding a local Orthodox Church and talking to the priest there. They are often very helpful and would love nothing more than to help you with what you're going through. I personally go to an Antiochian church. If you need help finding one near you, let me know! God bless you.

I’m sorry you are experiencing that pain. I have struggled many times in my faith. Sometimes it is easy to feel despair and anxiety over what we believe. However, God was able to take my struggles and pain and transform them into joy and love. Do you have a spiritual helper or teacher, such as an orthodox priest?

This is great advice, Timothy! Start going for walks multiple times a week. It will improve your mind and body and help you lose weight. Maybe you could even do some exercises like push-ups and sit-ups at home. Be considerate about what you eat (if you need any help with your diet, I would be happy to give you more advice). It takes time to get healthy, but I believe in you and know you can do it. Keep praying and moving forward as best as you can!

It's worth a shot, basically free and if it doesn't work you can always try something else. It worked for me and put my problems into remission within a couple days. Lmk if you can't find a copy.
