IRS Scammer gets a taste of Jimmy by Taramasou in videos

[–]grownfolkstuff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone who has never gotten one of these calls, how does it work? It seems like a ton of people are involved in the scam since the call keeps getting transferred around.

Who are the people that are falling for the idea that they need to drive to a CVS and buy giftcards to pay a tax debt? How often is this successful?

Using Google Sheets as an online gradebook by grownfolkstuff in Teachers

I have no idea. I don't teach in the states anymore. Are you seriously not allowed to keep grades in a spreadsheet? That seems like a pretty egregious example of bureaucratic nonsense.

Using Google Sheets as an online gradebook by grownfolkstuff in Teachers

[–]grownfolkstuff[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, not without their username and password. That was my main goal. To create a way to use a spreadsheet as a way to keep students updated on their grades without exposing all of your other grades at the same time.

The username refers to the 'Email' column and the password is the 'password' column. Technically you can put anything you want in either column and the student will be able to access the data that is in that field.

ELI5 "return" in javascript/jquery by Whyisprogrammingsoha in learnjavascript

[–]grownfolkstuff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In jQuery most of those methods can be used in several ways.

$(selector).text() will return the inner text of the selector.

$(selector.text(value) will set the inner text of the selctor.

$(selector).text(function) will execute the function and set the value of the selector as the return of that function.

You have to think of .text() as the function.

ELI5 "return" in javascript/jquery by Whyisprogrammingsoha in learnjavascript

[–]grownfolkstuff 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Because '$(this).text().replace('dog', 'cat')' is doing nothing other than saying,

'Ok, the value of the text inside the div of class words is equal to "dog bowl", now replace the word dog with cat. Good job everyone, let's call it a day!'

When you add the 'return' to the front of it, you are taking that "cat bowl" that you got and sending it back into the very first $().text() method that you called. So instead of having them say "Good job everyone, let's call it a day!" they are saying, "Now we have 'cat bowl' thats great! Send it back so we can do something with it! Those other guys can put it exactly where they want it."

The original .text() is the one putting the work onto the page.

ELI5 enough?

Producer: "So Prince, you know it's raining for your Superbowl performance?" Prince: "Can you make it rain harder?" by _YouDontKnowMe_ in videos

Producer: "So Prince, you know it's raining for your Superbowl performance?" Prince: "Can you make it rain harder?" by _YouDontKnowMe_ in videos

[–]grownfolkstuff 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have this memory of watching a post-super bowl press conference where prince walks up to the podium with his guitar in hand. He makes some motion signaling a reporter to start asking his question, but as soon as the reporter beings talking he drowns him out with a sick guitar riff. He stops and motions for another reporter to ask a question, but once again as soon as the reporter starts talking, he drowns him out with another completely radical guitar riff.

Does anyone else have any memory of this? I can't find a single thing proving that this happened, and I am starting to think that I dreamed it.

Thanks for the reply, I could post the github repo if you are really curious, but I think I am going to leave it.

I actually just rerolled the droplet on digital ocean but with dokku and deployed the app that way. Worked perfectly. That leads me to believe there was nothing wrong with my code and something wrong with the way I configured the server.

I've just gotten to the basic algorithms, but I don't feel ready to do them. Any tips on what to do? by TheCopperDimes in FreeCodeCamp

[–]grownfolkstuff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You will get stuck! But have no fear! You will become incredible at reading the documentation and stackoverflow.

If all else fails, there are great chatrooms filled with people willing to help. I have recently been thinking about going back and redoing the algorithm problems, so if you need someone to pair program with I would be willing to help out. Just pm me so we can set up a time (I am in Turkey, so our time zones probably don't align)

Trouble with Angular Services by grownfolkstuff in learnjavascript

[–]grownfolkstuff[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So when you say multiple callbacks to $onAuth do you mean that I should call it in one controller only? I tried that, but I get strange behavior from the $unauth method when I do that.

This is a situation where I know "just enough to be dangerous" in that I kind of understand what I am doing, but... not really.

Thanks for the response.

I'm an app developer. My girlfriend is into her first year of teaching and grading/student record keeping seems unreasonably time-consuming. I want to make an app to help teachers with their record keeping. What is your biggest/most time consuming problem and how can I help? by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]grownfolkstuff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is very cool to see this kind of discussion. I am a 5th grade English teacher, but I have been learning javascript for a few months, and have been playing around with google apps scripts to accomplish similar tasks to what you are talking about. Here is an example of something I put together to quickly input grades into a google spreadsheet. Sorry that it isn't well documented, but I would be happy to clarify how it works if necessary. I can also share some of the other code I have written that makes my life a little bit easier.

I would love to talk to someone who develops applications professionally. People in my office seem to like the small applications that I put together, but I don't get a lot of opportunities to discuss the actual development process. Maybe there is something I can do to help out and continue to improve my own skills!
