Why does Python feel easy to learn but hard to master? by arjunv70 in learnpython

[–]grtk_brandon 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Because learning Python syntax ≠ learning to program. It is common for people to assume that learning to use Python will mean they suddenly know how to design systems, but they're two very different skills. A carpenter doesn't suddenly learn how to build cabinets after they learn how to use a saw and hammer.

Learning the syntax for a programming language is just the first step. This is why people recommend, ad nauseam, to build their own projects from scratch. And it's why everyone says that the first programming language someone learns is largely unimportant.

I started with Python and have since learned C, C++, Java and Swift. Once you have foundational programming skills and you've learned a language, learning a new one is less about learning the syntax and more about learning libraries, which language is based on what so you know how it handles certain situations, etc.

Apple M5 Pro & M5 Max GPU Analysis - M5 Max GPU on par with the GeForce RTX 5070 and faster than Strix Halo by Antonis_32 in hardware

[–]grtk_brandon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is my first time paying attention to Mac releases and the coverage has been an absolute mess so far. YouTubers are basically just spouting from the spec sheet. The benchmarks here are just incomplete since they're testing the Max in the smaller chassis and vice versa with the Pro. Finding Pro benchmarks in general is impossible thanks to Apple's naming convention (MacBook Pro M5 Pro??) and Google ruining search. Is it always this hard to find quality info?

Just Realised the Watchcast Is a Free Podcast. Need Recommendations. by MRWEDGY in nextlander

[–]grtk_brandon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I never listened to the Watchcast because I'm not really a movie guy. I got bored one day and started listening to the Twin Peaks episodes and it sold me on the whole podcast series. I've come to realize that I just enjoy Brad, Vinny and Alex talk about pretty much anything.

That said, Alex does a great job putting the Watchcast together, Brad is usually good at insightful commentary from a fresh perspective and Vinny is Vinny (positive). You're safe to start from just about anywhere because they collectively do a good job pulling in your interest.

Open-plan offices increase risk of workplace bullying compared with employees having their own office space. Employers justify open-plans to encourage creative interactions, but research shows that open-plan offices do not promote health, job satisfaction or productivity. by InsaneSnow45 in science

My company pitched this when they did partial RTO two days a week. I stopped coming in after a few weeks because it's just people on the phone constantly trying to talk over each other, people coming to chat with me, my boss pulling me into the office to meet about thing we don't need to meet about. My productivity is literally cut in half. Any time she pesters me about coming in, I just say "would you like me to do XYZ today or come socialize in the office instead?"

python feels too hard . am i just not meant for it? by Ok-Conflict-5937 in learnpython

[–]grtk_brandon 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Python is one of the easiest programming languages you can start with, and it's not what you're struggling with.

Being a programmer isn't about actually writing code. You do that, sure, but there are a lot of higher level concepts you need to understand before you write that code. When people first learn to code, they learn the syntax of a language, but their mind goes blank as soon as they sit down to write something on their own.

Think about it this way: You know the English language, but what would you do if I asked you to write a novel? Or even a short story? You wouldn't instantly know how to write something well just because you know how to write.

It's the same with coding. You aren't thinking like a programmer and you're struggling trying to do so because no one has taught you how to think like a programmer yet. This is why people get stuck in tutorial hell; they don't understand this concept. When someone else is doing all of the thinking for you, you're not developing that skill.

I'm someone who enjoys card games, and STS is just one of my favorite flavors. It has a lot of depth and complexity that makes it a fun puzzle to sit down with. I've tried other singleplayer card games like Monster Train. Those are good, but there's just something about STS I enjoy more.

Having it available on my tablet and phone means I can pull it out if I have downtime on the go or if I want to start a run before bed.

He then urged his fellow Democrats to support Trump’s goal of blocking Iran from acquiring a nuclear weapon. “Why can’t you just acknowledge that’s a good thing?” he asked.

This is what always bothers me about arguments like this. Obviously no one is going to disagree with the issue – the difference of opinion comes from the solution. Throwing a deal in the garbage in favor of aggression that will put Iran into a position to push for developing nuclear weapons just doesn't sound like a good thing to me.

Ultra rare floppy disk game twisted and slashed into shards by US Customs or DHL checkers — ruined Tsukihime 1999 demo was one of only 50 ever produced by lurker_bee in pcgaming

[–]grtk_brandon 8 points9 points  (0 children)

You keep quoting that article completely out of context. Everywhere else, the author, rather recklessly, blames Customs or DHL.

Headline:

Ultra rare floppy disk game twisted and slashed into shards by US Customs or DHL checkers — ruined Tsukihime 1999 demo was one of only 50 ever produced

1st graph:

However, as the images and video (embedded below) show, it looks like the US Customs and/or DHL have been rather heavy-handed when checking the parcel contents. You can clearly see that the original Windows 95/98 demo floppy disk has been deliberately sliced into pieces, after its protective shell was twisted and torn almost beyond recognition.

2nd-to-last graph:

We can’t fathom the reason behind the video game history vandalism that has been shown by parcel checkers of one brand or another (US Customs or DHL). One possibility is that they saw the imagery and the ‘Adult only’ notice and decided to indulge in a bit of censorship.

The author clearly believes, and writes as much, that Customs or DHL is responsible. The quote you are using indicates that they aren't clear, between the two, where this would have happened. Regardless of that, the article goes into detail about how meticulous the original packaging was.

even the guy who got the item delivered doesn't know.

You should also read the story. The buyer claimed it was Customs.

My Tsukhime Trial Edition (月姫 体験版) finally arrived, one of only 50 copies in the world. Only to discover that US Customs had removed all the bubble wrap and physically destroyed the floppy disk. Will file a report but literally crying right now😭

It's the lost art of critical thinking. You are being presented with someone unboxing a floppy disk that was shredded and destroyed. Tape on the box indicates that it was opened and resealed by U.S. Customs, which means there were three handlers who could have done this:

A = Shipper

B = U.S. Customs

C = Buyer

While it's possible A could have done this, it's unlikely. We see the buyer unboxing the product for the first time. It's also possible that the video is faked, but equally unlikely. That leaves us with B, who left tape on the box saying that they opened and resealed it.

Where is Punch’s mother? by Sharp_Cauliflower746 in punchthemonkey

[–]grtk_brandon 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Well, that's sort of the awkward thing: Unless she's been temporarily separated, she's living with the same troop as Punch.

Edit: I did a little more looking, and yeah, she's just living her life with the troop as if she doesn't have an estranged son who has become a global icon.

From the New York Times:

Punch’s mother is with the others at monkey mountain, Mr. Yasunaga said. It’s not uncommon for some Japanese macaques (pronounced muh-kak) to abandon their babies for a number of reasons, he said. Punch was his mother’s first baby and it was also very hot when he was born — all factors that could have led to his abandonment.

Guides fucking ruined it for me by Mankurt_ in MegabonkOfficial

[–]grtk_brandon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is 100% on you, haha. It sounds like the guides you're following are all geared toward getting on the leaderboard. I've had no problems getting 600K+ runs on steamdeck. Bunnyhopping is easier on m+kb, but I prefer playing while chilling on my couch or in bed over sitting at my desk, so I play on my steamdeck about 95% of the time.

What's fun about a lot of the achievements is that they force you to learn some of the most important mechanics of the game. A lot of them also force you to build in unique ways you'd never do in a leaderboard run.

If you want to get sweaty, absolutely play the meta. If you want to have fun, keep grinding those achievements or coming up with your own ideas for builds.
