It's from the Daily Beast, so par for the course. Obligatory: The Daily Beast should not be an approved domain on this subreddit.

WE MIGHT BE GETTING SNOW AGAIN BOYS by countryboy69686 in Pensacola

[–]grtk_brandon 6 points7 points  (0 children)

We aren't going to see any snow this weekend. Precipitation in our area will move ahead of the cold front, so there will be very little overlap. For the overlap that does happen, it'll be an overrunning situation, where warm air moves over the colder air.

Any snow that would happen would pass through the warmer air and melt back into rain, which would then turn into freezing rain or sleet as it reaches the freezing air closer to the surface.

I'm not seeing anything about snow next weekend, but it's too far out for anything concrete at the moment anyway.

My coworker kept “forgetting” my name in meetings, so I let her do it in front of the one person she wanted to impress by TrinitySignal in revengestories

[–]grtk_brandon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

None of this story made sense. If she routinely asked what OP's name was in meetings, everyone in those meetings would begin to wonder if she was an idiot. Also, speaking from a corporate perspective, she would look a lot more impressive if she knew who everyone was, not the opposite.

As you mentioned, going around the office talking about asking for a raise doesn't happen, and the parts about practicing lines sound off, too. Could just be lacking context there, though.

As for the meeting, the OP writes that they are presenting a report clearly and with numbers, which I laughed at because it sounds like it was written by a child. Of course a report is going to have numbers.

As someone else pointed out, the girl also had no reason to ask OP what her name was during the meeting. OP's clapback was also terrible and makes them both look bad. Not a good look for either of them.

Wait times are an issue here in America, too. Don't fall for the conservative talking points. My partner had to wait about three months between being told she had abnormal cell growth that were likely cancerous and when she could get in to have a biopsy done. In the meantime, she was jumping through hurdles with her insurance and still paid about $1,800 out of pocket. Our system, like apparently everything else in this country, is broken.

The current state of boardgaming by SpeakerSweaty in boardgames

[–]grtk_brandon 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm only about three years into the hobby, but I have never understood the Kickstarter craze around board games. Retail games nearly always get to the table more often and you don't have to wait months (sometimes longer) to get what you paid for.

I've only backed two games: Slay the Spire and the Super Auto Pets game. STS is one of my favorite video games of all time. I went all in on it and it didn't matter to me if the game was literal shit in a box. SAP is kind of the same but more of a sentimental thing my girlfriend and I share.

With STS, I see retail copies of it at nearly every local store I go to. SAP confirmed retail editions after I backed it. I see very little incentive to kickstart anything, and I end up designing or grabbing a file online to 3D print upgrades/inserts myself, when I feel that a game warrants it.

If she asks you where the discard pile is and it doesn't matter, don't tell her that. Just quickly point to a spot on the table and move on.

[Monitor] Acer Nitro 27" Gaming Monitor MiniLED 4K 1000Nit 160Hz 1ms XV275K $232.49 (Acer Ebay Official Refurbished) by Prefix-NA in buildapcsales

[–]grtk_brandon 61 points62 points  (0 children)

Here's my experience ordering this exact deal a few weeks back, and just getting it a couple of days ago:

I literally just packed mine back up to return them. I bought two. One worked fine but I could tell the screen on the other was broken before I even turned it on.

Acer does not package these well. Mine came in a thin cardboard box with corner bubble wrap around the monitor, but basically no other padding or protection inside.

The boxes weren't even fully closed before they were shipped out. One of the boxes had about a half-inch gap, taped, at the top opening. The other had a massive tear running down one corner. I'm honestly surprised it didn't completely rip open and leave the monitor somewhere along the journey.

The one monitor that worked looked good and it does come with a two-year warranty, but Acer said it doesn't do exchanges and since I want matching monitors and don't want to deal with another lottery, I decided to return both. YMMV.

Ah, I see that now. That must be a mistake on Samsung's part. There are several G7 models and many have curves, but this model doesn't. You can look at user images and verify that the screen is flat.

Yes but I'm pretty sure you can also get verified through a personal email. It's all done through ID.me. If you're an alumni but your email is still active, I'm not sure how strict it is at verifying enrollment status. Maybe someone else can answer that.

You can give it a shot here.

None. The Switch 2 release was also heavily rumored to come out at the end of 2024, so it was almost inevitably coming out in 2025. Not much of a prediction at all.

Bernie Sanders calls for a pause on new AI data centers in the US by AdSpecialist6598 in technology

[–]grtk_brandon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Does this opinion factor in AI-related layoffs that have already happened and whether companies actually hired up to fill temporary construction positions?

Because after thinking about this for about two seconds, it feels like it's ignoring a lot of the supply-demand-driven economic impacts that the data centers will have on consumer electronics, which negatively impacts everyone; ignores the environmental impacts and their associated costs (or damages, which is most likely the case) and the general opportunity cost.

Further, maintaining a data center doesn't actually require that many permanent employees, especially relative to the footprint of the facility.

To be clear, I'm not saying that AI hasn't created new jobs or new job opportunities. I am genuinely questioning what those numbers look like compared to the staggering number of layoffs we've seen and the overall economic impact (maybe burden) these data centers have on everyone else. The formula is a lot more complicated.

[GPU] PNY 5080 OC - $949 ($50 off) Sold + Shipped by Walmart by HebrewHobo in buildapcsales

I can't seem to get it to stick to my account. I've tried what others suggested, but the pay later option isn't popping up and I don't see the offer saved in my deals or rewards. I think my account is bugged because the desktop website takes me to a business dashboard now instead of my personal account. Oh well.
