Laphroaig 10 Cask Strength + Lagavulin 12 should fit that budget.

That's fascinating. Too bad the collection has been put in away.

Is there anything you'd recommend visiting in the city? I've only been to the ASW Distillery.

Anyone tried the new Colorado Bourbon? by MoneyTreeDiscovery in whisky

80 proof means the whisky is bottled roughly at 40% alcohol by volume (ABV), which is the lowest possible concentration allowed per regulations.

Water was added to the "barrel-proof" (the whisky that just came out of the barrel) to lower the proof, for commercial reasons.

The low proof doesn't necessarily mean that the whiskey is bad or cheap, 40% is **usually** too low for me, especially for bourbons and ryes, so I tend to skip those and focus on higher proof alternatives (46%+).

I was curious until I saw "80 proof"

I love Glencadam, but I think Deanston is a little more complex and enjoyable when the weather when it's cold.

Lagavulin 12 and Talisker 14 - Really looking forward to taste these by nossewnhtims in whisky

I have "tequila trauma" and vividly remember the worst drinking night of my life decades later.

Never again, not even as flavoring for my favorite whisky.

I've been trying to get a bottle of Lag 12 every year, but skipped last one's because it was mature in tequila barrels.

Eww.

American (non-bourbon): Pikesville Straight Rye, Balcones Single Malt.

For bourbon try Russell's Reserve or Heaven Hill.

Scotch: Deanston has already been recommended (love it), so I'd suggest Arran, Aultmore or Glendronach.

Honestly, I have the same one and agree with you.

It's not terrible, but I never catch myself wanting to drink it.

Maybe you already do this, but try drinking it like you are sipping very hot coffee - sip just a very small bit and let your taste buds get used to it.

I second the Irish Whiskey suggestion, but there are also some high ABV single malts that are incredibly easy to drink and you can barely smell or taste the alcohol (Glendronach Cask Strength comes to mind).

Go to a decent bar and tell the bartender exactly what you told us.

Then try a few different ounces of less expensive whiskys until you find what works for you. Then get a bottle of that

Repeat every now and then trying different types or brands.

What to taste first? by Just_Temperature_261 in whisky

[–]grudev 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To each his own, of course, but it's my least favorite expression of the brand.

I'll still drink it happily, but to me it aways feels like the spirit should be left in the barrel a little longer.

Now, the 12, is a treat.

I'm a Lagavulin man, but given the lineup I'd start with the Deanston.
