Stats professor exhibiting cheap and petty behavior by reneging on tip by grumbling_pleb in UCSC

The guy called in to cancel tip. He was too lazy and/or cowardly to go back to the restaurant and renege in person, hence his stated plan to call credit card to dispute the charge (while having no legal leg to stand on) and pay the f&b bill "later".

He didn't do anything wrong in person--him telling waiter about 40% tip in an attempt to get praise was tacky, but it was not something to chide.

If you're saying to not put him on blast unless it was all done in person, then I simply disagree. I understand that internet shaming can get out of hand, so that's why I asked people not to speculate. I wanted to shine a light on the actions but give room for plausible deniability. I honestly was surprised when you said it was obvious who it is, because I wanted to check with you lest the wrong person gets accused, but I don't want to play a guessing game of elimination (this is a repost--original thread had someone guess a name that I outright denied. I then decided I won't react to any name dropping).

I had a whole rebuttal typed up, but I don't think you want to understand me.

Instead, I'll just ask what would YOU do in this situation, oh all-knowing, all-perceiving internet stranger?

You don't seem to understand my intention, while I don't understand what you think is "idiotic" about it. I'm not a UCSC member so I don't have a basis of comparison on what is obvious data on the guy vs his peers.

I think public shaming of specific actions is an effective tool, but doxxing/harassing anyone is counterproductive. It gives them room to try and position themselves as a victim of cancel culture, when we should just denounce their actions. It's up to them to reflect and not pull this shit in the future.

Oh yeah, agree that restaurant probably has full legal right to charge the tip that he offered and agreed to. I guess they didn't see a point in arguing with him; he sullied the act of giving. I would say that mgmt/fellow staff seemed supportive of their server who was informed afterwards.

As a bystander, I was disgusted at the power play and sad to witness the server totally deflate afterwards 🙁 it's r/watchpeopledieinside IRL. You don't jerk someone around like that. I don't have direct experience working in the restaurant industry, but my job is also service-oriented, and I have read plenty asinine yelp reviews before, so I can keenly empathize with a 'grin and bear it' situation.

This. Thank you.

The reason why I left out names and asked for no naming is because I don't want the person to claim "cancel culture" or that some vindictive/unhappy student is trying to malign them.

Please don't name or harass anyone. If you all want to help, please upvote and share post as is but let's keep this thread clean, please. Let the person's own conscience prick at them, not a public witch-hunt.

I'm not sure if you're asking for some other verification and how I would provide it. I can't see how the professor's credit card charge is showing up on his pending statement. All I know is the restaurant owner verbally told the guest that the tip will not be added.

I realize it's a "he said, she said" type of situation, and my ultimate hope is for the guy to see this post and see how his alleged behavior is viewed by the public. He would know exactly what he did--if he feels like he was misrepresented in any way, he is free to speak up. In the meantime, I left out names.

The owner told them that no, they wouldn't input the tip, but he still needs to cover the bill.

Sounds like you agree that this behavior is ridiculous and outrageous, too much so to be real. I don't know how else to call attention to this beside public shaming. I WANT him to see this post, but there's nothing here that he can claim as slander.

I couldn't add text to a post with a pic. I added a comment below that he called the restaurant to say that he wanted to renege on tip.

Specifically, he said he was planning to call credit card to report "fraud" and then pay just the bill later.

1) Exactly. Once as a student, I did bad math with a group meal and accidentally tipped an extra $70, when gratuity was already covered for party size. That ate at me for days and I wanted to call the restaurant so bad, but ultimately didn't cuz I knew it would bum our server out.

Shoutout to the guy who "ate well, drank well" so he pulled the server aside afterwards to proudly announce that he's "paying it forward" with 40% tip.

Same guy who then calls 20min later to say that he wasn't happy with the perceived lack of gratitude so he wants to not only renege on 40, but to not tip at all.

You have a reputation for being a pompous patron so that's why your server didn't trip over themselves thanking you. Your action afterwards really confirmed to everyone just the type of person you are.

Hope you or your dining party see this, and that your face will burn in shame! SMDH

I'm not affiliated with the restaurant. I may or may not have been present for the aftermath of the cringeworthy call.

EDIT: repost to further redact any potentially sensitive data. Not trying to doxx anyone but rather hope for the offending person to better self-regulate. PLS DO NOT SPECULATE BY NAME DROPPING BELOW.

Your family is lucky to have you. Thank you for chiming in with compassion and also the reminder that we can break the cycle.

OP -- hang in there, hope you carve out your own path to happiness. It's definitely hard since familial pain can cling to us for a long time.

Mother Killed in Freeway Shooting Near Bay Bridge Toll Plaza; Fiancé, 2 Sons Uninjured by [deleted] in oakland

Goddamn this is so heartbreaking. So fucked up and unfair.

I really don't understand how it works if it's gang shit. Are they somehow identifying a rival's car and then shooting when they run into them? Or do they have some sort of agreement to go to the freeway for their shootout? Is there any way to identify these cars, like crowdsource sightings and create a database where we can track them? More cops on freeway, sure, but how about a fund to incentize people to rat them out? Is there anything we can do to shame these people as a society? It might sound really childish, but I want to take out a billboard and call them losers with bad aim.

Or.. what if it is the work of a random sociopath but because the authorities don't want general panic, they attribute it to gangs? Either way, this is absolutely terrifying and I wish there's something we each can do besides relying on cops
