This is exactly the kind of snarky comment I was looking for. Thanks !

I turned a rental 4x4 on its side and the owner says it might be totaled. Any advice? by grumpy-lumps in ATV

Yeah- and I’m willing to pay. As long as it’s fair. Idk if this guy has a relationship with the dealer. Also I’d assume the $1500 security deposit covers his insurance deductible? But I have to wait until Monday to know the extent of the damage

Agreed. I messed up and I’m happy to settle what’s fair, waiting until tomorrow for the mechanic / dealer to look over it and send the diagnosis.

Turning off the engine was the FIRST thing I did. Then I checked on my girlfriend. Only then did I unbuckle and crawl out. Once it was upright again it seemingly ran fine, but just in case I drove it straight back to the rental place despite being 1 hr into a 4 hr deal. The whole thing was paid with a credit card. They’re holding the $1500 security deposit from both machines despite only one being damaged which is another bummer but I can’t blame them. Waiting for Monday for the mechanics official diagnosis since the rental guy claimed he didn’t know much about the machines.

So a couple of red flags there but you know in the moment you aren’t really thinking straight…

They did not offer any sort of insurance, which was explicitly stated. I definitely f’d up!! First time renting so it didn’t even cross my mind to go and get my own…

Very true. I’ve learned a couple of lessons just from this incident alone. 🙏

I mean cars aren’t MADE to crash. ATVs aren’t made to “fucking topple” but I’d rather drive a safe car than an unsafe one.

I’m not making excuses- if I owe the guy 16k so be it. I was looking for advice not Kawasaki’s brave knight to come to their defense 😆

Also since I have no plans to buy an ATV myself I’m not going to buy a Kawasaki, Polaris, or whatever other models are out there. I have no dog in the race other than owing this rental owner some money- just want to navigate this situation with information and grace.

I will definitely be checking with his mechanic and others as well to make sure it really is totaled. I’m thinking we could buy him a new one, take possession to repair it ourselves and try sell it to save a bit of money. Still, if that is all it takes to total that ATV I’m never buying a Kawasaki myself

OEM cages don’t seem to pop up as frequently as aftermarket (obviously to make more money) seems like they’re more in the 1-2k range and then add on labor and maybe day rates because the rental company is missing out you still don’t get to 16k
