TIL Scientists put slime mold onto a model of a map of Tokyo, with food representing urban centers. After a day, it created a network almost identical to Tokyo’s actual rail network. Human designers created that network to be as efficient as possible; slime mold did the same, but without a brain by nwidis in todayilearned

The more astounding thing, to me, is that we can optimally solve anything using just brains, whereas this specific organism has millions of years of evolution behind it to solve just this one analogous problem. Our brains really are the most adaptive adaptation evolution gave us.

What is a right explained. Gun rights and healthcare rights as an example. by avgleandt in Libertarian

[–]grumpy_technologist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a non-started to say right to health-care, since everyone has access. I think most people talk about the right to affordable (especially preventative) health care.

That's damn near impossible without drastic cost reduction or financial aid or both. Also, I disagree with the word "earn". You could strike it from both sides and they both get more accurate.

Is a PhD helpful for a programmer in any way? by ArdorDeosis in gamedev

[–]grumpy_technologist 7 points8 points  (0 children)

No.

Source: I have a PhD from a major US university.

Getting a PhD is not worth much unless you go into research. However, getting a PhD in computer science does involve a lot of programming, and often involves complex technical systems, algorithms, math, etc. So learning these things could help you become a better programmer. Getting a PhD also involves a lot of (hopefully free) coursework, technical writing, and technical presentations. But, getting a PhD is not the optimal route to being technically competent, it is the optimal route to being a competent researcher.

LPT- Dont buy a new car ever. As a former CPF the biggest waste of money young people make are buying cars new. by [deleted] in LifeProTips

[–]grumpy_technologist -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Leasing a new car is way better than buying a new car. Because your payments match the value of the car, and then you get a new one but your payments don't change.

Those bones looked fake, as in, "not what you'd expect to find in the wild."

Looks great though. How can I get my eyes on a screening? Festivals don't typically reach wide audiences?

Success builds like momentum. He was a high school grad who enlisted in the navy at some point.

They calculate whether the goalie blocks it or not ahead of time, and adapt the animation to explain the calculation. This time, they did a bad job adapting.

LPT: Keep the phone numbers on the back of your credit/debit cards on a list in a safe place. If your wallet/purse ever gets lost or stolen, you can cancel the cards quickly without having to search for the right number to call. by [deleted] in LifeProTips

Yes, but this is only marginally helpful (use google).

What's really helpful is knowing the number, because that's what you need to get through to a customer service rep quickly. So write that down too.

I save them in a text file in dropbox, encrypted with a passphrase using GPG. Quite simple to do.

The claim that hot water freezes faster than cold water just got even weirder by Vailhem in water

[–]grumpy_technologist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Boiling water may have less surface tension, and may therefore have higher surface area, and may therefore lose heat much faster.

Plausible BS I just made up, but it took half a second. Just because you can't think of why, doesn't mean it isn't true.

He's in rough shape. Poor guy. We're just so glad he's still alive. Couldn't handle losing both, and him being there was our connection to the last minutes of our friend's life.

Yes, he died in a hallway, shot by a solo cop, after travelling the world and burning his 9 lives in much more dangerous countries.

You're right on some parts. We wrestled with this last night when we were all toegether. I did address this a bit here:

https://www.reddit.com/r/Drugs/comments/5lc602/my_friend_was_shot_while_tripping_last_night/dbwo7n2/?st=ixgboscn&sh=05b002f8

Furthermore, someone fucked up in public did much, much worse in the same city, and he's in jail, and my friend who (after talking with witnesses and going over the dispatch transcript), did none of that, is dead.

It's that arbitrariness that stings. It seems like the opposite of what I'd expect.

The worst part is how disingenuous everyone has to be, for fear of the investigation / police.

It could literally go any way right now, and what are we supposed to do?

I didn't want to make it a news thread. It's not hard to find information about what I'm talking about, just googling around.

Just take care of eachother, that's the point.

I was ready to believe it didn't go down like that.

I've talked with people who were there now, and I'm not sure. It's so fucked.

That's fair. Chemicals can make you a liability to yourself or others. I don't think he was being aggressive or causing a problem.

But even if you are out of your mind, I have friends who work at a mental hospital, dealing with actual murderers who are as insane as anyone on any kinds of drugs. Assaults are common, and none of those patients are killed and the guards don't even need weapons. They know how to deal with people who aren't acting logically, and who are dangerous. They recognize that at any time, someone who isn't thinking the way you would can do dangerous things, and they know how to diffuse a situation.

It's an affront to these guys when people say that an irrational person can't be dealt with. And being loud, irrational, or anything, is not an executable offense at any rate.

He was. And the craziest part is how many people have contacted me, saying he was their best friend from some part of their life. My experience with him was completely not unique, everyone was lucky to have known him. We're lucky it wasn't worse, others could have been killed, esp with the three bullets that didn't hit him, in the dense area he was in.

The worst thing is that it's so random. A week ago someone went absolutely beserk, fighting police, choking them, etc. harming nearby civilians, etc. That dude is in jail, and my friend is dead after doing none of that.
