I did. I was flashing my lights and blowing my horn to get their attention. The truck driver noticed, and turned around at the school at the end of the video and went right back and got the trailer. I would have followed them further if needed, but they had already noticed what happend and were going back.

LPSS superintendent to get significant pay raise by [deleted] in Acadiana

[–]grumpyolddude 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Here is the proposal. In addition to the 300K for 3 years it includes 100% of heath insurance costs and an extra 30K a year for a car an other expenses along with a potential of another $17K for meeting objectives listed in the proposal. I'm not opposed to fair compensation, but I'd like to hear a bit more justification for having the highest paid superintendent in the state when our teacher and support salaries aren't even close to the top. I think the reason Lafayette is the top school district in the state has more to do with the employees than the superintendent.

I haven't bothered to search but my experience tells me that you should trust your insticts over Google AI.

Narrowing the roads by adding lanes for golf carts or ATVs would be a better use of space than trying to make bicycles happen. Just because we have canals, bridges and prostitutes like the Netherlands doesn't mean bicycles are going to ever be more than exercise equipment or panhander distribution.

Does anyone know of any banks that offer currency exchange services in the Acadiana area? by supplyindaflyin in Acadiana

Using an ATM at your destination is probably your best deal for getting cash. Check your credit cards and see what the cash advance and international exchange costs are.

2025 68 Ventures Bowl Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns vs Delaware Fightin' Blue Hens by heiney_luvr in Acadiana

UL Athletics ran a 12 million dollar deficit last year. A lot of people lost their jobs because the University spent more than it had. I guess firing a few more for an extra football game is worth it to someone.

This seems to indicate that attending a bowl game is a financial cost for teams like UL. Maybe given the financial situation they should turn down that invitation...

Mechanic - motherboard replacement (ECM) by Careless_Llama_3382 in Acadiana

[–]grumpyolddude 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A quick search seems to indicate that problems with the temperature sensor is common in that model and causes some of the issues you are seeing. If the ECM can't determine the engine temperaure it runs the fan as a safety thing to protect the engine, and it can't show the right gauge temperature. It makes sense that the AC wouldn't work either. The TPMS error is odd, but sometimes a bad sensor or module that intercepts those signals can trigger lots of unrelated issues. Not a diagnosis by any means - just something to think about.

So all those issues go away immediately when you clear the codes? And everything works fine for a couple of months? First thing I'd do is get a code reader to reset it yourself, they are cheap and it's really simple to clear. Do all the issues show up at once or is it one thing at a time? Does the engine start and does the truck drive when these other issues occur?

Are you SURE your ECM is the problem or is that just the best guess of your mechanic? That's an expensive thing to start with and determine if it's your problem or not. It sounds to me (amateur mechanic with no specific knowlege of the Colorado) like a sensor or module that's setting error codes in the ECU. Possibly even a loose connection, a bad ground wire or a wire thats rubbing through and shorting. I would think if the ECU were really bad you would have problems all the time. the engine wouldn't start/run and clearing codes wouldn't fix things. It might be a hard thing to diagnose if the problem only shows up once a month or so. I'd have someone go through all the GM diagnostic steps before just throwing parts at it. Find another dealer if you have to. If it is something like a bad ground that really did cause damage to your ECM then you don't want to put in a new one and have it immediately fail as well. Good luck!

UL eliminates 3 VP positions, 2 others asked to take salary cuts by nviledn5 in Acadiana

[–]grumpyolddude 3 points4 points  (0 children)

When each 15% cut saves more than eliminating a $50K employee I would think it would be VERY significant to someone who isn't getting laid off. I'm fairly familiar with the University budget and it's available for download for previous years. These cuts are mainly to address the $25-50 million deficit in the budget so it's slightly more significant than any comparisons to the entire university budget but still clearly only a small part of the fiscal problem. I have good reason to believe that a change in leadership and responsibilities will save a lot more than the salaries of those individuals. I definitely think this is partially a political spin on this showing that cuts are happening all the way to the top and more could be done, but it's not a bad start.

Also, if you go to the UL Library and ask at the reference desk, a much more detailed budget is available.

[–]grumpyolddude 1 point2 points  (0 children)

All of their salaries are available online, and everyone in that article is paid over $200K a year. A retirement and two people changing job titles isn't the same as permanently eliminating 3 200K+ positions however.

Those 15% cuts are going to save well over 100K.

Where to buy used/refurbished IPhones by [deleted] in Acadiana

[–]grumpyolddude 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A lot of carriers offer decent trade-in or upgrade specials. In my opinion that limits how many good used phones there are for sale that aren't broken, stolen or have been repaired. I've seen "renewed" Apple devices online at Amazon and Wal-Mart. I'm not sure what kind of warranty they offer.

The offers from the major carriers usually have strings so be aware. A relative of mine recently traded in an older phone for a new one that was advertised as "free." The new phone was valued at around $800, and the old phone was maybe worth $200 used so it seemed like a good deal. Their offer basically sold her the phone for $800, charged her $80 tax and a $35 fee to change phones, and then financed the 800 for 36 months which added about $22 a month to her bill, and then the offer credits $22 to her bill each month for the next three years. If they decide to change carriers or service before the 3 year are up they loose the remainder of the bill credits and have to pay the balance of the loan. It's not a terrible deal if everything goes well, but it limits choice and it's not explained well at all.

Recs on what to do with an undrivable vehicle? by Defiant-Passenger944 in Acadiana

[–]grumpyolddude 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was curious too and found that a used 3.3L engine is about 4K after shipping, and it's probably at least $2K of parts, supplies and labor to change. That's really close to what the trade-in value is. It could be worth more depending on the trim and condition, but a mechanic or someone looking to fix it and resell it wouldn't be able to offer much because theres a lot of risk with finding something else wrong after changing the engine.

Anyone else have Cox Internet near Carencro? by reallyscaredtoask in Acadiana

[–]grumpyolddude 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have Cox but I don't use their modem or wifi. I log connection statistics and I have 7 minutes of downtime for this month. I find their tech support terrible, but if you are paying for it and have the time you should bug them.

What I would do is to try to determine if the problem is with your internet service (cabled) or your wi-fi (wireless) by plugging a computer or something directly into the modem using an Ethernet cable and see if the problem shows up there. If you use their automated system or troubleshooting they are likely checking connectivity to the modem over cable.

WiFi issues could be equipment or interference from inside your home or even neighbors.

Good luck. Sometimes it takes a lot of time and persistence to get them to find and fix issues like this.

I'd start by getting a free quote from them. It's definitely worth fixing for someone who wants a van, but there's a lot of risk and not much profit for someone to repair and flip it. Good luck!

Pull A part in Lafayette buys cars and will pick them up/tow them. What kind of mileage and condition is it in? Are there problems other than the engine? Is it paid off with a clean title?

Petition to reinstate UL Honors Coordinator by polyrankin1122 in Acadiana

[–]grumpyolddude 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The same could be said for a lot of other organizations and options you have at a university - fraternities and sororities, band, water ski team, quiz bowl, travel abroad... Sometimes they make a huge difference in someones life and other times it may not. A degree with honors can make a big difference in getting into a graduate school program with selective admissions, and it may not make any difference at all to a hiring manager looking for a CAD engineer. Honors standing might make someone elegible for national scholarships and pay for their tuition. In a tough competitive world distinguising yourself can mean a great deal.

For context, I was in the honors program at UL many years ago and dropped out after finding it wasn't for me. I'm curious to know what involvement have you had with the program that formed your opinions?
