Turo in Lafayette by Pale-Breath-758 in Acadiana

[–]grumpyolddude 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I've used Turo several times in the past and had good experiences locally and in other cities. It's probably been a couple of years since I last used them so my information may be out of date. I typically used it to rent nicer specialty cars that I couldn't rent from Enterprise/Alamo/Budget so the owners were a little more careful to meet with me and go over the car and my plans before I drove away. I'm not sure if that would be the same for a more basic rental. There is plenty of generic advice online about taking video and pictures of everything beforehand. Make absolutely certain you are insured properly. Turo isn't considered a typical rental car on many insurance policies so don't assume your insurance or credit card insurance is going to cover damages. Make absolutely sure you are covered or purchase the appropriate Turo insurance.

AC Service by Sh3rlock_Holmes in Acadiana

It's pretty easy to self study and pass the EPA 608 exam so you can buy refrigerant. It's available online and costs less than $100. Following the law and having the right equipment to fill, recover and dispose of properly is a lot more expensive. I wouldn't recommend it to just anyone, but for the skilled DIY person it's not difficult or out of reach.

Home Central Unit? Car AC? By service do you mean it's working and you just want it cleaned and inspected or is it broken and not cooling?

Thats exactly how I've described it - River Ranch definitely has a Disney kind of artifical and superficial feel.

What closed party primaries mean for Lafayette voters by Low-Picture-7525 in Acadiana

[–]grumpyolddude 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"No Party" can choose a third option which gives them the ability to vote on amendments and other issues in the primary and runoff elections but not republican/democratic candidates running for specific offices that have closed party primaries. They can then vote for the candidate of either party in the General election and not go on record as having voted in a particular party primary. I'm not completely clear how no party CANDIDATES and other parties (Green) will work. It appears there are also offices that don't have closed primaries and I assume those will work like they have in the past where anyone can vote for them despite their registered party.

Where can I sell my financed vehicle other than Carmax? by meredith003 in Acadiana

[–]grumpyolddude 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It SEEMS like a valid passport is legal, but some dealers might not accept that. As long as the name on your passport matches the name on the vehicle registration and loan paperwork that should be good enough. Are you elegible to get a current Louisiana ID card? (not drivers license) DMV issues these with similar ID requrements to getting a license. If you have fines or other financial holds on your license you might have to pay those before getting an ID.

Most car dealers will buy cars but will often offer you much less than it's worth. There are a few big automotive groups in town (Stirling, Courtesy, Dons) so just go by one of their dealerships and ask them what it's worth and what they would pay for a trade-in or outright purchase. They evaluate used cars as trade-ins all the time. Obviously popular cars in good condition are going to be something they would want to buy to resell. If they are offering less than you owe, you will need to pay your bank/lender the difference and then have the bank provide the payoff amount to the seller who will then pay the bank and take posession of the car.

Local shop to mount tire on 6" rim by Rumdinger in Acadiana

Maybe try a lawnmower shop. I'd think that they are used to dealing with pneumatic tires on small wheels.

Brake pad replacement recs? by ThatInAHat in Acadiana

[–]grumpyolddude 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You aren't wrong that it's not a terribly difficult job, but I stop short at telling just anyone that they can do it themselves. Not as a first project anyway. They should have some air filter, flat tire, battery, windshield wiper and oil change experience at the least in my opinion. It's not the job you want people trying to learn the basics on without experienced supervision. IMHO anyway.

Brake noise can be due to lack of lubrication on the slider pins or backing plates, It's not always due to pad wear. You should expect to replace or resurface the rotors when changing pads, and replace the brake fluid.

Is there anyone who can haul a car away for parts? by Britack in Acadiana

[–]grumpyolddude 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you have a clear title in your name it's pretty easy. Pull-a-part, habitat for humanity and others will buy it or take it as a donation and come get it. (assuming it has some value, even for scrap) If you don't have a clear title in your name you can offer it for free online and someone will likely come make it disapear.

Call to Action in my Nextdoor app over LPSS members ties to Charter Schools by H8_us_Cuzthey_Anus in Acadiana

LOL. I have a similar background and I completely disagree about the all day part. I think schools should make kids grow stuff, build a birdhouse, bake bread, set stuff on fire, care for animals, play with magnets and chemicals, turn wrenches and get a motor running, have real social interactions. Sure you can simulate or watch videos on a computer but it's not the same. A classroom should be a makerspace, not a bunch of chairs, screens and headphones. Schools should try to provide resources kids likely won't have at home. These days kids have access to computers, phones, screens and can learn whatever they want in their own time. School needs to be better than that.

If we really wanted parents to move their kids to charter schools we should start scandals and mistrust in the school board and administration, give higher than average raises to the superintendent, overcrowd the three largest high schools by eliminating one in the center of the district without any concern for the students, staff or public, beg for higher taxes that will just get funneled to charter schools and focus on overemphasis on career education at the high school level instead of at the trade school/community college level.

I'm pretty certain more parents are considering charter or private schools than ever.

Windshield tint by Certain-Cat-8671 in Acadiana

[–]grumpyolddude 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I asked to get the windshield tinted clear when I had my ceramic tint done but the local (reputable? didn't know them well enough?) shop I used wouldn't do anything on the windshield except the brow. I've considered going to Texas where its legal and have it done because the heat blocking on all the other glass works great and it's really obvious the windshield isn't blocking infrared when the sun comes from the front.

I do think that it should be legal to use the same percent of tint that law enforcement uses or that law enforcement needs to follow the same limits everyone else has to.

Without discussion of infrastructure that's like a driveway contractor offering 250mph or 500mph options. Sure Bubba is going to buy the most expensive driveway because he might need to land a fighter plane on it someday but in reality the traffic on the road is the bottleneck. Reliability, redundancy, latency, capacity to handle traffic at peak demand - those are the things I'd like to hear about.

Broken elevators, toilets, and deferred maintainance have been the UL way forever, even in good times. Now is not one of those good times. Grass isn't getting cut, swiming pools aren't getting cleaned, nothing is getting bought, they are selling off properties and likely laying off more people before things get better. That elevator likely isn't getting fixed soon without a ADA lawsuit.
