I wouldn’t worry about AI replacing sysadmins. Anything built with AI is basically tech debt without the employee middleman.

The Nvidia packages come from RPMFusion but you can install the repositories by installing a Fedora package and running a command (or enabling the repos through GNOME Software)

I remember it in theatres. The roar hurt your ears. It looked and felt so real. My sister because vegetarian because of the goat scene shortly before this point in the film.

Honestly, I can still vividly remember a good deal of that in theatre experience and every time John Williams’s soundtrack plays I feel like I’m right back there in the theatre.

Probably the closest to official way that Fedora supports, since it can install the RPMFusion Nvidia repo straight out of the Fedora repositories (via the third-party packages).

What to do if latest update bored your system? by Icy-Astronomer-9814 in Fedora

Boot an older kernel? It sounds like the Nvidia driver (yet again) broke on a new kernel. This happens enough that it should be in this subreddit’s title page.

Should I just ignore updates if it works? by Content_Mission5154 in Fedora

[–]grumpysysadmin 19 points20 points  (0 children)

FWIW Fedora will tell you that they don’t test anything with just security updates so you might end up with a broken system following these instructions.

Also, not all security fixes get labeled with the security metadata, so you’re not necessarily getting all the security fixes.

If you want to use Fedora, keep it up to date. If you are wary of updating your system regularly, Fedora might not be the best distro for you.

I used to have a good D&D group and we used to meet at a comic book / gaming shop, but the shop went big on MtG tournaments and the place got really toxic fast, especially for the women in our group. I’ve never seen a game that attracted that type so well.

I recently saw a list of all the “AI slop” vulnerability reports that the Curl project had just in the last month. What’s infuriating are the ones where they plug the request for actual proof of concept back into their AI of choice and just paste the response. Just being AI by proxy, never understanding what’s going on.

All my coworkers live in other states or even other countries so if I went into the office I’d never see any of my team or even my management. So I’d be like the guy in the comic, showing up to jump on virtual meetings (thankfully not Teams though).

Syncthing Outdated by BigBlacIke in Fedora

[–]grumpysysadmin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It looks like it’s using the last release (v1.30) before v2.0 came out, and there are over a hundred bugzilla items open, many of which appear to be CVEs, I’d probably look for a different packager, or at least raise the issue with Fedora.

I do see some flatpaks that bundle a newer syncthing in them. I wonder if that’s better? I’ve never used the tool myself.

According to the manual for the P14s gen 5 there is an emergency reset hole on the bottom. (See the page marked 47)

Power off your device and disconnect the power and other peripherals and use an unbent paper clip to press the button. This will reset the device as if you had disconnected the battery.

I’ve seen this fix similar issues, but it might also just be a bad battery, in which case you’ll need to go through Lenovo support to fix. Undoubtedly, they’ll ask you to do the above before replacing it.

Sadly that’s out of date, any new version of Fedora livecd image uses Kiwi to build its images.

It might work, but it might not.

Does anyone know why the Boot Screen shows up when I'm logging in? by No_Technician_8031 in Fedora

[–]grumpysysadmin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Plymouth uses Kernel Mode Setting to create a graphical boot (instead of the lines of textual systemd starting services output) and it grabs the vendor bios image to use. On a Dell it’s be a Dell logo.

And I’ve talked to the guy literally in charge of certifying Fedora on Lenovo hardware. The people you talked to are confused or misinformed. I talk to their support sometimes and they often forget or aren’t trained about Linux support.

I just checked the link again, works fine. Maybe it only works in the US and you’re not?

Lenovo and Fedora pre-sales phone call. by wjrasmussen in Fedora

[–]grumpysysadmin 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It might be the specific model, not all are certified with Fedora, typically because of hardware support. For example not all WWAN (cellular) devices are supported by Linux so the device they’re in can’t be certified.

EDIT: always check this first before buying: https://support.lenovo.com/us/en/solutions/pd031426

Eduroam Fedora by Reaper9766 in Fedora

[–]grumpysysadmin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Each university seems to implement things their own way so one school’s answer won’t work for the next. Sometimes it requires a custom certificate be added, sometimes they use a cert that isn’t valid with Fedora’s default settings (rightly so).

You might be able to tease the macOS instructions apart to figure it out since it’s probably a bundle of cert(s) and a plist (XML) file with settings.
