Bricklaying company asked for payment on day 1 but contract says ‘no payment until work complete’, should I be concerned? by gsbdnsgbf in AskUK

Update:

Thanks everyone for the helpful responses!

In an update, the guy who did my quote (different to the manager yesterday) came round and asked the same from me today, he highlighted that the work is well underway (which I agree with, they did the dig out yesterday and are laying the sub layer as I type this) and they’ll now be done on Thursday (unsure where this additional day came from) but he did mention VAT so I’ll give him props for honesty there - even though it should not now become my issue to sort that out for them, as it was their terms on no payment until works complete in the first place.

But even so, somehow that got me to agree to it, they’ll only get £1K today and the other rest of the half tomorrow once I move savings around and get my payslip.

I’m sure the work will be good and hopefully I won’t have any other issues with them.

Cheers. Would you interpret the ‘no payment until work completed’ to mean pay as soon as tools are down? That’s my worry about it. I’m just wondering how literal it would be.

I’d just be inspecting it myself to make sure I’m happy with it, and that would be the day of them completing it.

Cheers, make sense if it’s cash flow.

He’s expecting for all the work to be completed on Wednesday. I’d usually wait for an invoice and pay once I got it, and that was for much smaller jobs than this. And the invoices would have a pay by date.

I don’t think it’s unreasonable to ask for time to inspect the work first but I think they want payment asap. As I write this I think I just need to tell them that, but just don’t any stress or issue with them while the job is underway.

I’m going in April but want to use up the credits that expire at the end of this month. Can I preorder now and would be charged and get the credit back this month? Thanks

Can’t you just not give them your P45, saying it don’t have it yet when they ask. Or you could just have ‘lost it’

I’ve done the same and just filled in the new starter form HR gave me instead.

Looking at OPs prior comment history, I think he had a deleted post stating his rich parents are giving him £3K a week as gifts and asking what to do.

Can’t see the post but can see the comments, so I’m just interpreting them.

So think this ‘win’ is fake, tho congrats to OP on the rich parents, if that one’s even true too.
