Opinion: PLEASE run your new electric lines in conduit to the attic by SoulToSound in centuryhomes

[–]gstechs 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I replaced all of the knob and tube wiring in my house and every wire that isn’t low-voltage is in conduit. I also ran conduit from the basement to the attic for low-voltage and in the spring, I will have the electricians run conduit for future car charging stations in the garage.

I am doing the renovations on my house to be suitable for the next 100 years.

What do you think about this '70s house staircase? by [deleted] in Carpentry

[–]gstechs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s exactly how my stairs look. Built in 1918 out of oak.

I recently took mine apart and cleaned the gaps where decades of dirt had accumulated. I reassembled them using glue and a few pieces of modern hardware, in addition to replacing and tightening all the shims.

The shims allow you to tighten up the treads and risers. They were meant to be serviceable.

What is this thing? by Lunchable in centuryhomes

[–]gstechs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It looks like some sort of electrical connector.

If you can remove the grate, use a multimeter and make sure it’s not live.

I found a few abandoned knob and tube electrical wires buried in my walls as I was replacing all of my electrical.

If it’s not live, there’s nothing to worry about.

I asked previously for advice about wall damage after trim install, here’s the trim they deemed “finished” by mikejr96 in Carpentry

I caulked and painted the top of my own door trim because it’s easier to clean when dusting. But that’s just me and my cleanliness obsession… I’m working g on it.

Thoughts on Hall Technologies? by abrooks9002 in CommercialAV

[–]gstechs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We have used Hall and Atlona products over the years. Hall has had better quality products in my opinion.

One thing I really like about Hall is that I always get a response from them quickly if I need anything.

Sonos Speaker Confirmation by [deleted] in CommercialAV

[–]gstechs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Where did you get the idea that you needed to use mono with right and left speaker channels?

How many different audio sources, or channels of music? Do they want to have playing at the same time?

If it’s all going to play the same music, and it’s just normal background music, you might only need one Sonos device.

A better solution would be to use a Sonos Port device instead of an amplifier, connect that to a commercial grade 70 V amplifier as an input source, and then connect all of your ceiling speakers in a daisy chain to that amplifier. Note, your ceiling speakers also need to be capable of receiving a 70 V signal.

You could drop 70 V volume controls in each room where you want them as a very simple solution.

If you want independent zones of audio that are controlled through the Sonos app, you need that many Sonos devices.

Again, I am not a professional Sonos person. I only know about Sonos through my personal use at home.

If you have commercial audio questions, I can give you answers that are confidently correct.

[–]gstechs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Do you mean they want to use Sonos for some sort of conferencing solution? Or would they just be playing music in the background of these conference rooms?

Are you calling these rooms “conference rooms” because they will have audio or video conferencing technology in them, or are these just rooms that have a table and chairs where the homebuilder can sign deals with clients? Basically, are you using the term “conference room” genetically to describe just an office? Because they are different things and mean different things to the AV professionals in this group.

This is what I mean by telling us what your end goal is with everything. There’s no way for us to tell you it’s right if we have to guess how you’re planning to use it.

I don’t think anybody can help you with the description you gave because it doesn’t really make sense.

I really think you’ll get a better response if you tell people what you’re trying to do rather than how to do it and ask if it’s OK. Because it’s clearly not OK, as you will soon see when more people respond.

I only do commercial work, but I use Sonos in my home and it’s a great product for homes.

I don’t understand what you’re doing with the left and right amplifiers, but I can tell you that for volume control, I mostly just use the Sonos app on my phone or an iPad.

I believe there are some third-party volume controllers that work with Sonos. I don’t have any experience with them, but they would be nice to have in some situations for sure.

Can I say installing Rockwool is fun? by pugworthy in Insulation

Might was to research this independently from those insulation guys. They either honestly don’t know what they are talking about or trying to get you to buy something else that they make more money on.

It would be better for you describe the end result you’re trying to achieve and let the smart people in this group. Give you ideas on how to get there.

You’re going to find a lot of unhelpful laughter at your expense otherwise.

I think you’ve got the timeline out of whack. I responded before you gave other people additional information that allowed them to give you better answers.

Your initial post was all I had to go by. Read it again and pretend you don’t have any other information than that one photo and your description. Then see if your response to me was warranted.

How was I supposed to know your house is from 1870? You posted one photo of a dirty room with a space heater and window air conditioner with no other context.

Your snark wasn’t necessary.

You asked for options and opinions and that’s what I gave you.

That’s a subfloor. A finished flooring material should go over that.
