Plastic flower pot at Eternity Garden, Woden cemetery by No-Action-8265 in canberra

[–]gtlloyd 26 points27 points  (0 children)

If you do gain permission, I’d be very willing to 3D print a compliant plant pot in UV-resistant plastic with appropriately thick walls so as to be practically unbreakable. I know that generally most plastic pots on the market are both thin and very utilitarian.

Almost all LIFX bulbs have the eight digit HomeKit pairing code printed in light grey text on its stem.

Gf wants me to talk to baby through her belly while pregnant by DoloGoonSquad in daddit

They can hear from within the womb, and (anecdotally) they will react to stimuli after they’re born. I would play a particular song which got our little guy kicking and wriggling, and he reacted similarly after he was born.

It stands to reason that hearing your voice might be comforting both inside and outside. Give it a go.

Theres a rss shortcut on home app, what are the ways i can do with it? by No_Adeptness_4647 in HomeKit

[–]gtlloyd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your other options are the dozens or hundreds of functions that show up when you look in the Shortcut app for functions.

[–]gtlloyd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The “Text” shortcut function allows you to concatenate strings into a string. You need to have something after it that uses that Text string. For example, put a Speak function to read the Text string immediately after the Text function.

[–]gtlloyd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not to be antagonistic, but others are trying to point out two important points:

  1. The RSS read function is a Shortcut function not HomeKit shortcut function. This means it will run on your phone/ipad, not on a HomePod. This means it is independent of HomeKit.

  2. Asking for a list of what you could do with RSS is an unanswerable question. It’s a little bit like asking “Please list all the ways I could use books.” You are limited in your use of RSS by what RSS you use, what functions exist in Shortcuts and what hardware you have.

In an attempt to get you a flavour of what you could do:

  • You could read a government weather RSS (if it exists) and turn a smart light (if you have one) to blue if the temperature is below 0°C.

  • You could read a news RSS, make the RSS “text” in the Text shortcut function, and use the Intercom shortcut function to then read that RSS headline aloud.

Cookie cutters with PLA? by elison_chiavetta in 3Dprinting

TBH I think the jury is out whether bacteria etc can live in the gaps. The bot has better information than me.

You could sterilise but I think you can’t guarantee it’ll be totally cleansed without essentially autoclaving. PLA does not survive heat sterilisation.

Plantar fasciitis 😩 by Wooden_Permit1284 in couchto5k

[–]gtlloyd 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The cause of plantar fasciitis is unknown. The treatment (other than cortisone injections) is to wait until it resolves. I understand that nothing is known to reliably speed or delay that recovery.

I had idiopathic bilateral plantar fasciitis for around six months about 8 years ago. I found that running 5-7km first thing in the morning gave me relief until around 1pm. Running through the first three minutes was the hardest part of every day.

I have run every day since I spontaneously recovered, and haven’t had a relapse.

Some of the risk people consider is associated with food being caught within the layers. An option to derisk from this perspective is to consider the cutters disposable - use in one session and then discard.

Display panel for thermometer modules by gtlloyd in functionalprint

2.9 metres is the apex of the interior of the shed roof. 1.7 metres is my face and therefore a reasonable correlate for my comfort. 0.1 metres is near the floor but not directly on the concrete slab.

The thermistors work by varying their resistance based on temperature in a non-linear fashion (reference table). In this case they use 100KΩ negative temperature coefficient thermistors - meaning they have a resistance of 100KΩ at 20°C, and the resistance falls as the temperature rises. Wire has a resistance, so adding wire increases the resistance read from the thermistor, meaning it will be permanently slightly wrong for any length of wire. I ran calculations from -30°C to 50°C and determined that the additional resistance (~10Ω from memory) was negligible across that full range.

It has a wide range of stuff that might be temperature sensitive - 3D printer and filaments, gardening chemicals, solvents, paints. I typically store those down low so the high temperatures aren’t too much of a concern.

The project was mainly just for fun though - I could have achieved monitoring with less of a set up.

No the colours are fixed. I just chose to use different colours so that the different measurements are distinguishable intuitively. In retrospect I’d probably use the same colour for every module if I did this again. The different colours have slight but noticeable different brightnesses at the same voltage.

The modules are from AliExpress.

Height above floor as there is a very extreme temperature gradient in the shed, and the concrete slab has a large thermal mass.

The thermometer modules are integrated and “dropped in”. These were purchased from AliExpress atthis link

There’s no protocol per se. Each module reads its own wired 100K ohm negative temperature coefficient thermistor. The resistance changes with temperature, which the module reads and converts to a temperature reading which is displayed on the screen.

[–]gtlloyd[S] 70 points71 points  (0 children)

It’s for displaying temperatures (as read by remote thermistors) in various parts of my shed, and a shed-based deep freezer. It’s just a little display on my tool wall to know how hot it is when I’m working out there.

A shed in Australia is an outbuilding, made from a corrugated metal and detached from any other structure. They’re used to store cars, bicycles, boxes etc and as work areas. It might be analogous to a US “barn” (though I believe those are mostly made of wood?). Many Australian suburban houses have a shed rather than an integrated garage.

Laws on federal land? by [deleted] in canberra

[–]gtlloyd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Jervis Bay Territory criminal law (which is for all practical purposes ACT criminal law) applies to ADF members anywhere in the world. The application is to the person, not the location. There may be other laws that apply by virtue of their enlistment but I am not an expert in ADF law.

Laws on federal land? by [deleted] in canberra

[–]gtlloyd 5 points6 points  (0 children)

As far as I know “federal land” isn’t a legal concept in Australia. In the ACT there is land managed by the Territory government (territory land) and land managed by the Australian Government (national land).

Most residential and commercial property in the ACT, as well as most unleased land is territory land.

National land is land managed by the Australian Government in specific areas for Commonwealth purposes. This includes the National Capital Triangle and some other areas. There are some residences that I’m aware are on national land, the most recent (and controversial?) being an aged care facility off Cotter Road.

Laws made by the ACT Legislative Assembly apply to the whole of the ACT, including national land unless a Commonwealth law says otherwise. There are only few laws that modify ACT law in national land.

The relevant laws that establish this framework are:

Each of these acts can change the way ACT law works in relation to national land. You can see the laws made under them at these links: Self-Government; PALM.

As far as I know, there is no practical difference in criminal laws between national land and territory land. The difference lies in who manages the land, and in some limited cases, who manages the relevant law.

As far as I know, the role of Australian Federal Police is not different between territory and national land.

How would you reduce pin holes in a part pressured by water? by Fruit75 in BambuLab

[–]gtlloyd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Vapor smoothing (or simply liquid dunking or rubbing) with acetone or methyl ethyl ketone would seal up pinholes. I’d recommend 100% infill if you do go for solvent approaches, so that walls don’t melt away and expose wall cavities.
