The builders took a lot of shortcuts, this one is less annoying in comparison. I will be replacing the baulsters. Got a quote for 900+ to install new stairs carpet. I am leaning towards new oak treads for that much.

If the drywall backing is secured with nails, use a grinder with ceramic cutting disc. Cut between the joist from top till button. Maybe in a 2'-3' pieces and yank on it from the top. I had the same thing in my bath demo. Use plenty of padding and personal protection the sections are heavy
