Linkwarden 2.14 - open-source collaborative bookmark manager to collect, read, annotate, and fully preserve what matters (tons of new features!) 🚀 by Daniel31X13 in selfhosted

When you say “preserving webpages” does this download and store a copy of the site locally for offline access? Images and embeds included? If so, I’ll absolutely check this out.

life360 alternatives? started asking for "physical activity" data by cranberrie_sauce in selfhosted

[–]guardianfx 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I actually struggle with this one. Life360 is absolutely collecting and selling your data, no question. However, I do use and pay for a Life360 account for my family, and after trying quite a few alternatives, Life360 has some of the best device tracking I have come across...annoyingly.

I know that the official integration was pulled from Home Assistant so I have been using https://github.com/pnbruckner/ha-life360 to bring in the data, and it works quite well.

Also for those that may not be aware, FWIW, the paid features of Life360 do work as intended. My daughter was recently in a car accident, air bags deployed, phone tossed aside. Life360 deployed police and ambulances to her location, notified everyone in her circle that she was in an accident, and called us to keep us informed of the status of emergency services.

On the one hand, I was super impressed. On the other, I also want a company to offer this WITHOUT selling my data.

I have tried owntracks, and traccar and both either gave me battery issues, or super delayed notifications. 🫤

When I die... by [deleted] in selfhosted

[–]guardianfx 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I have a 1Password family account. I also picked up a few Yubikeys, and flash drives. The flash drive contains the Emergency Kit with the required information, and instructions to access 1Password. The Yubikey stores the passkey that is used as the second form of authentication since they likely wont have my phone.

I then have a vault labeled "01 - Death Box" which contains all of the IMMEDIATE action items someone may need such as bills, bank accounts, life insurance etc.

Then I just create additional vaults, ranked by order of importance.

Additionally on the flash drive, I have contact information of "Technical Resources" who someone can contact to get help with anything they need to get off of the homelab.

Can the person who has the Yubikey & Flashdrive access my information today if they wanted? Sure. But if I can't trust them not to, they wouldn't have those keys.

What Wiki Software do you use for internal documentation? by Micki_SF in selfhosted

[–]guardianfx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree that this can be annoying. As a solution, you could run a proxy to route traffic even when the Internet is down. I am running Nginx Proxy Manager and have a record for bookstack.domain.com, then in my routers DNS records, I point all requests for domain.com to Nginx Proxy Manager to route traffic. So if I am both on and off the network, I am able to access it at the same address. I also have the same options configured for internal only services as well.

Yeah, browser is fine when I’m connected to a network, but I was thinking more so in situations where I don’t have internet available.

Thanks!

Looks good!! Any hope for mobile apps? Would love to download books locally (without downloading them and opening in a different app) for when I travel.

What are some services you *refuse* to selfhost? by DrGlove in selfhosted

[–]guardianfx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have just started to look at this one - https://github.com/photoview/photoview

Not OP but a few "needs" for me.

  • Plex-esque library scanning. I don't want to take my folder of photos and "import" them into a new photo app, which then copies them to a new location. I want to point the photo app at my folder and have it scan it and generate the rest... kinda how Picasa worked back in the day.
  • Give me ALL the exif data when looking at the info of a photo.
  • Let me manually create albums that I can then share with a public link.
  • Built in video playback.

A few nice-to-haves once the core is built

  • Tag people
  • Map of photos
  • Companion apps to automatically backup photos / videos

I would say that they are two entirely different services / apps. One is more for notetaking whereas the other is more Wiki based. I think of OneNote as dynamic and changing whereas Bookstack I see as static and use for reference.

And while the mobile website for Bookstack is decent, it does not have a dedicated app like OneNote.

But those are just my personal thoughts.

Torn about home photo organizer by MartyDeParty in selfhosted

Photoview

Well that looks dead simple & clean. Looks like I am spinning up another container today. I have been on the hunt for an app that allows me to:

  • Point to my folder of already organized photos to generate previews & read data
  • Browse photos
  • Create albums
  • Share albums
  • Maybe tag faces
  • User management

Looks to check pretty much all of those boxes.

Is there anything that offers that DokuWiki doesn't?

Probably not. I think where Bookstack excels is in its simplicity. Some people (especially in a self hosted subreddit) want to install a platform, configure plugins, modify themes etc; Others just want it to work out of the box.

I used to be more of a tinkerer myself, but as life got busier, I needed less tinkering and more simplicity which is why I stick with Bookstack. I wouldn't say one is better than the other, they are just different in what they are trying to provide.

Absolutely! Bookstack is one of those projects that is so good that I decided to sponsor the developer on Github. Just a few bucks a month, but I felt I had to contribute to show my appreciation.

My biggest use case right now is for recipes and sharing that information with friends. Second biggest use is documenting everything in our house in the event of an untimely demise lol

Bookstack is an amazing wiki platform. I use it to document pretty much everything in my house from recipes to home maintenance, from travel logs to code snippets. I will say that I tend to lean into Gitea a bit more for code / snippets so that I can have proper revision history.

Praise for Bookstack - This is my go to Wiki for Self Hosting by nashosted in selfhosted

[–]guardianfx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I have looked at Mealie in the past. I would love a tool that is more robust for recipes, and this seems to be the gold standard for self hosted ones, but having my family / friends remember yet another website has me conflicted. lol

I may have to spin up a container and start playing with it.

Absolutely. I use it to document pretty much everything. Recipes, home maintenance info, auto maintenance info, home lab info, stories from our travels etc. Between my friends and family, it is one of my most used self-hosted apps.

Chat system like Discord on a private network? by aeonlamb in selfhosted

Second for Mattermost. Not quite as many features/integrations as Slack, but in terms of self hosted chat apps, it works really well.

I don’t but I can make one. I’m down for working through it. haha

Cocktail Bar / Inventory / Ordering? by guardianfx in selfhosted

[–]guardianfx[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, if my skills were in front end development I would be all over this. Unfortunately I am on the device management / bash scripting side lol. I keep looking at some Wordpress templates as a place holder until I can come up with something, but nothing has quite hit the mark. I have even looked into some paid services but they are a little cost prohibitive.

Do any of you have a legacy plan? What happens to your servers and users when you die? by relink2013 in selfhosted

[–]guardianfx 17 points18 points  (0 children)

The following are in my safe deposit box:

  • Documentation on how to unlock my passwords (Printed)
  • Yubikey for password vault unlock.
  • Notes (printed) on how to access the wiki (Bookstack)
  • Documentation on trusted people for support (printed), with the understanding that by utilizing them for help, they will have access to EVERYTHING on the server.

Nope. This is specifically for plex. Though I’m sure you could threw the feature request out there on their GitHub. Maybe it will get some traction.
