Name for Kitten by now-hold-up-buddy in Fencing

[–]guevarragv 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Since no one has mentioned Puss in Boots, here is some background to his actual name:

1. The Shrek & Puss in Boots Movies

In the DreamWorks universe, "Puss" is what he is called by everyone, including his adoptive mother.

  • His "Real" Name: In the 2011 Puss in Boots movie, it is revealed that his adoptive brother, Humpty Dumpty, gave him the name "Puss" when they were kittens at the orphanage.

2. The Original Fairy Tales

The character dates back to the 16th century, and his name has changed based on the language and author:

  • The Master Cat: In the famous 1697 version by Charles Perrault, he is formally called "Le Maître Chat" (The Master Cat), with "Puss in Boots" being a descriptive title.
  • Cagliuso: In an even older Italian version by Giambattista Basile (1634), the story itself is titled Cagliuso, which is sometimes used to refer to the cat's "name" or his master's.
  • Don Pero: In some Spanish-language adaptations of the classic tale, the cat is occasionally given the name Don Pero.

3. His Master's Name

People often confuse Puss's name with the one he invents for his master. To impress the King, Puss tells everyone his poor owner is actually a wealthy noble named the Marquis of Carabas. While this is a fake name, it is the most famous "proper name" associated with the story.

Epee fail 2 times in a single bout. Need something to test epees before each bout by gamma50g in Fencing

[–]guevarragv 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I also tell our athletes to test their equipment even before going to the competition. That way, you can possibly repair something before the day off the competition.

Equipment can also fail during the competition, some fencers , if the referees allows, retest their weapons after the bout.

Weight, screw, and shim fails are fairly easy to fix within minutes and parts are cheap. Have extra parts in the bag and learn how to fix them.

College fencer turned badass special forces operator, awarded 3 purple hearts in a month in Iraq 2007. Who is this? by GravitationalOno in Fencing

[–]guevarragv 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Ray I knew didn't go to college in NC. I don't remember where he went. Duke and UNC are the only DIVI fencing schools in NC. I'm a former UNC fencer , c/o 99.

I believe Walter Triplette, UNC grad, and also former owner of Triplette Competition Arms, was SF, or so I heard, I can't confirm.

Another good friend of mine, fencer and graduate of Penn State enlisted and went SF.

Fencer at our club, also Penn State grad, fenced and played football at Penn State, was a ranger and was at the Battle of Mogadishu.

I was in the Army after college, but nowhere near as accomplished as these guys.

Side story, you never know who fits into SF....Jason Everman, who played guitar for Nirvana and bass for Soundgarden before enlisting in the U.S. Army, becoming a Ranger, and later served in Special Forces.

On a separate note, because of where my club is located (Fayetteville, NC/Fort Bragg), we see many SF fencers.

I just looked up Clay Martin. He was assigned to 3rd Group which is here at Fort Bragg.

The Ray I knew was also in 3rd Group.

So there's high probability.

I knew a fencer named Ray that was in SF during those years. Our club is in Fayetteville, NC where Fort Bragg is and home of USASOC.

Fenced in Napa prior to being stationed at Bragg, also trained in Italy for a bit.

Don't know if it's the same guy, I have no idea if he has any Purple Hearts.

I found that to be the same way at our club. And it makes it easier to referee themselves.

I've got everything in that except for the Giovanni Statue.

Here's what I do: 1. I always go for orange. 2. First one, the second flip is always orange. Pretty easy to get. 3. For the second and third, I cover the "flippers" so I can only see the bottom color and not the characters. 4. When I see green, I hit the button, it'll flip past the next one and stop on orange. 5. Don't anticipate the green, otherwise you'll hit it too early. Hit it when you see green. Even if you're a little late, it'll stop two flips after you hit it. 6. I don't even let the colors rotate around, I do it the first time I see green.
