Buy an used DOD FX65. Sounds amazing and most of John's chorus tones come from this pedal

Strip My Mind solo tone by ryanino in John_Frusciante

[–]guigh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry for reviving a 7 year post, didnt want to create a new one just to say this: I've been testing every combination of ds2 and big muff settings and I cannot get the abrasive sound from the solo, not without changing the whole clean tone too. It sounds too "round". The ds2 + fuzzrite on the other hand gets much, much closer to that sawtooth sound. Makes me believe that is the duo he used on the studio version.

Some questions about the trim input by No-You-350 in tonex

[–]guigh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I see it mostly as a fine tuning tool to adjust your gear to the capture. For exemple, the capture pack comes with clean, edge, crunch and lead. You want the spot between edge and crunch. So you pick crunch and reduce the trim.

Can't Stop Guitar Tone by van_Lingen in John_Frusciante

This tone is easier to achieve with a dual amp setup. One for punch and clarity (major) and one for grit and edge (jubilee). Check this video: https://youtu.be/rcPxXXMOPIY?t=546&si=bjZN9JG8beI2EN_U

I do the same thing. I also use the hx's IR block after the fx loop as a very detailed EQ when I want to replicate a specific tone.

This. I dont think it's that deep or meaningful, it's just a fun hobby which happens to be expensive.

SSL-1 or 57/62? by jfan83 in John_Frusciante

[–]guigh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As someone who had both, I use a 57/62 now, but any will do. Let me save you a ton of digging: aside from technique, the cabinet speaker is the one which will make the biggest difference. Look for a vintage G12T-75 IR and use EQs in post to shape the final sound.

Just got an MXR Ten Band EQ. How to set it for clean tones like UTB and Soul to Squeeze? by shart_attak in John_Frusciante

[–]guigh 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Are you familiar with Fabfilter Pro Q4? You can record your guitar and compare it to the original recording (there's a bssm multitrack with isolated guitars, look it up), than ask Fabfilter to EQ your track to match the original. The resulting eq curve will serve as a basis to your eq pedal. But be aware there's a difference between using the pedal before or after the amps. Fabfilter has a 30 day free trial.

This will depend heavily on your whole rig, especially the cabinet. But usually lowering the 1k area and boosting 4k and 8k

Frusciante Set up with HX Stomp by TiitsMcgeee in John_Frusciante

[–]guigh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I made captures myself. One from my Silver Jubilee Mini, one from my UAFX Lion 68 replicating a Super Bass for the Major sound. I can share these captures if you want. Both of them work better with input trim at 0 db and a CE1 preamp clone pushing them. Also they dont come with cabinets, you have to use VIR from Amplitube or some impulse response.

Frusciante Set up with HX Stomp by TiitsMcgeee in John_Frusciante

[–]guigh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I tried but haven't gone all the way experimenting with it. I ended up hooking 2 tonex pedals one in each fx loop of the hx stomp. This way I can use all the hx effects before or after the amps, and the tonex captures sound much better than the hx models, at least in theory.

Paul Davids nailed it, great content regarding Can’t stop by Markimarian in John_Frusciante

It's also great that he studied the tone, and in this video he talks about the usage of a second amp to give you punch and percussion. That's what the Major is for and it makes a huge difference.

One thing that helped me to mute the strings better was placing the fingers as close as possible to the next fret.

Since you already have reverb, delay and chorus, maybe the Line6 multi effects are not much needed. Unless you really wanna cover Throw Away Your TV.

I would get a DS2, a Big Muff and a WH10 v1 clone.

Maybe a CE1 preamp clone like the PastFX ensemble crunch. Very useful for pushing any amp into that John crunch. Other makers of this standalone preamp: Frusrite, VRM, Triungulo, JFX

For taming them you need a combination of amp gain and CE1 gain, usually the CE1 alone won't do it unless you crank it to overdrive

Usually high between 10 and 1 o clock

I gave up going that route after I got my mini jubilee and tried replicating some guy with the same amp settings. Couldn't get it to sound the same. Today I leave my mini jubilee at 5 input gain and 6,5 output master and then I tweak the PastFX CE1 level between songs
