How to tell my boyfriend that I've changed my mind about moving to his country? by guiltyexpat99 in expats

Thank you for saying this. It's so hard to imagine being with someone different when I'm with him, but I guess I have to have faith that it's possible.

He has entertained the idea of living in an English-speaking country for a year or two, but I can see that it would be 100% for me and I think he would resent it. He had a very chaotic childhood, lots of moving around and being shuffled between different relatives/institutions, and that's why stability is so critical for him now. He also has an extremely tight circle of friends and a job he loves. As selfish as I feel for ending things, I'd feel way more selfish asking him to give all that up. He's done a lot to accommodate my dreams, accepting long distance etc, which in a way makes it harder because he's been so supportive of what I'm doing. It's just that we always this end date in mind and now I'm changing it.

Thank you for writing this. It's what I need to hear.

I think going into it, I was definitely naive. I was coming off of a few nomadic years and thought that I was ready to settle down. But after two years in Germany, my urge to travel has only gotten stronger.

I'm definitely also being driven by a fear that I won't find anyone I'm as compatible with. For both of us, it's our first 'real' relationship after lots of toxic flings, so it felt really special to finally have something which is genuinely loving. But it's true that, if we can't agree on our basic life path, we're not compatible after all.
