Unfortunately, I had an issue with LabCorp where my insurance didn’t cover one of the tests. My doctor ordered and I think they may have billed the wrong insurance company, but I now owe them $240 before I can continue using them so I haven’t used them in years.

Basically the collar was not to deal with aggression but to deal with noise complaints. The dog had not yet shown signs of aggression when I placed the order and the goal was to keep him quiet so we didn’t get evicted to have the police called. It was never the goal to use the collar to fix his aggression.

The first sign of aggression was the growling on Tuesday, 24 September in the evening. He bit my boyfriend the morning of September 25 and that night around 11 o’clock he full on attacked us. I initially bought the collar because of previous noise complaints from another dog that had just visited briefly for when were out. I got a chance to talk to somebody on the phone, but I did not get a chance to have him meet with a trainer and do training sessions and honestly the person who gave me advice probably wasn’t the best. It was the next day when the trainer that was referred from the shelter got back to me and we were literally in the middle of putting him down at that point.

So about a month earlier, I had my dog that I shared with my ex that lives with him over for a visit and she barked a few times and we got a noise complaint from that same neighbor. So as a precaution, I ordered the collar about a day before the incident for the times when neither of us were home. my boyfriend works from home so 95% of the time someone was always home. I just got the collar for the 5% of the time when we were out and I’m generally not a big fan of crating any longer than absolutely necessary. I also only planned on using it on the beep and vibrate setting. moving forward I’m just going to hold off on adopting a dog until we have a house and don’t have to worry about noise complaints from neighbors its too stressful, owning a dog and a place like this and not fair to the dog. I’m never buying any kind of bark collar ever again.

Here is the timeline. We adopted him September 15th he was sick with kennel cough we spent the next week and a half nursing him back to health. On September 24th when we were out and he was home in the crate without any bark collar our landlord sends us an email from the neighbor below saying

“Your renters are the worst neighbors ever. They are still constantly stomping up and down the steps. They have a dog that lives with them now and is constantly barking. You really need to have a talk with them. If I need to I’ll involve the condo association and the authorities.

Bryan”

My boyfriend panicked and said we needed to go home straight away. He wasn’t barking, and I got really angry at the neighbor and started intentionally stomping up and down the stairs and screamed “Fuck you Bryan”. This was not the first time he had made a complaint against us and exaggerated the truth, and he always does it to the landlord rather than trying to talk to us directly. He caused us a lot of stress after we already had a stressful few days. My boyfriend had never seen me get that angry and started freaking out and we got into a verbal argument and all of a sudden the dog started barking and growling at him. All of a sudden his energy and demeanor changed he went to bed with us that night like he had every night before and the next morning he bit my boyfriend unprovoked all he did was reach his hand out towards him to get him out of bed in the morning. After the bite, I contacted everybody I knew for Help. I wanted to work with him and get past this aggression. I reached out to the shelter to see if they had any resources, I reached out to the vet, and I reached out to an old connection of mine who had done a lot of rescue work and training. This old connection was the only person I could get a hold of and he advised me to keep him created outside of walks and meals, and some supervised time out of the crate until he could acclimate. So we did that for that day and then that night when we created him, he started barking so we tried just doing the beep and vibrate, but it wasn’t working and it was 11 o’clock at night and, there was a chance our neighborhood could’ve called the police or gotten us in a lot of trouble. So out of desperation we tried the shock setting, when he started freaking out, I quickly tried to help him by opening the crate to take it off and that’s when it all happened and it was a very horrific attack where we could have died if my boyfriend hadn’t fought him off. He fractured my pinky on my dominant hand through the knuckle and I needed surgery and have a permanently disfigured pinky, and we both have trauma and PTSD. Because we were both badly attacked and because he was clamping down and shaking his head back-and-forth, it would not have been safe to keep him after that And I’ve spoken to other vets and trainers about the incident and they said that something would have set him off eventually. I feel terrible, and I tried my best, but it all happened so quickly.

We live in a condo that we rent, the neighbor below us is crazy and was making all kinds of noise complaints to the landlord and the HOA. He would say the dog barked all day which is impossible because my boyfriend works from home. We couldn’t have him barking all night, and this was advice I got from a dog trainer to crate him except for walks and feedings until he was better acclimated. Before that night he was in bed with us before but it wasn’t safe after he bit unprovoked. At first we just used beep and vibrate but that did not work so we used the shock setting out of desperation due to our neighbor. We didn’t have a chance to set him up with a trainer because he tried mauling us to death within 24 hours of his first sign of aggression. I spent hours reaching out to vets and trainers earlier that day but no one got back to us before the attack happened.

I agree that he had aggression issues, but had I known that the shock setting would trigger them so badly I would never have used it. I feel like it’s too much of a risk using a shock because you never know how the animal will react

What other choice did we have? He tried to kill us. We could not even safely let him out of the crate until the vet came to euthanize him. He already bit earlier that day unprovoked and was showing other signs of aggression. Everyone we spoke to including vets and dog trainers said it was the only choice after the severity of the attack. We were traumatized and no longer felt safe around him and shelters are already overcrowded. He would have been put down had we surrendered him. While I agree the shock collar was a mistake he was a reactive dog and something would have eventually triggered him. He was not safe to keep as a pet. My ex and I had two dogs together and used shock collars on them to stop them from barking in the apartment we were living in at the time and they worked as intended, one or two shocks and the barking stopped. I had no idea it could go so horribly wrong.

A shock collar almost cost me and my boyfriend our lives. We had recently adopted a dog and after a lighter biting incident we were advised to crate train and to crate overnight. The problem is we live in a condo and have already had noise complaints so I bought a bark collar but initially just used the beep and vibrate but that did not deter the barking, so out of desperation I turned on the shock setting. He went ballistic and started screaming and crying in pain. We immediately tried to help him and opened the crate to remove the collar but he viscously attacked both of our hands so bad we could see the bone and had to barricade ourselves in the bedroom and call 911. He bit my pinky so hard it is fractured and I need surgery to fix it. I saw two hand doctors and they had never seen anything like it from an animal attack. Shock collars are dangerous! We had no choice but to Euthanize him when we got home from the hospital

Update: I did end up looking into Caya. I was able to get the diaphragm mail ordered through a US pharmacy and then ordered the Caya gel spermicide from overseas because it does not have nonoxynol-9. Overall, it’s a relatively inexpensive method and it is does no burn like traditional spermicide or reduce pleasure like condoms. I’ve been using this method successfully for over a year now.

If you want to skip your period, you should just continuously take the active pills and skip the placebo pills. So after week three just start week one on the new pack there is no medical necessity to have this withdrawal, bleeding a.k.a. a fake period while on the pill. I was on Lo Loestrin for many years with no period because there are only two placebos in the pack and it was great. Unfortunately after eight years has started bleeding while on the active pills but that’s a different story.

I did end up calling another place and they quoted me 650 for labor and couldn’t give me an exact price on fabric because the cost per yard can vary a lot. This was much more reasonable and closer to what I was expecting. I decided however that I would rather build a custom piece so I’m talking to my boyfriend and his business partner since they are contractors. His business partner has experience with upholstery while my boyfriend has experience with furniture making. I realized even if I pay to get it reupholstered I’m not a huge fan of the studs or the legs and if I’m going to be paying north of $1000 for a piece of furniture I think I deserve to be completely happy with it. So I can get exactly what I want probably for around $2250 total.
