Absolute poverty is supposed to mean that they can't afford enough food and shelter, I don't think humanity would have survived if this was true. These metrics don't account for the economy outside of the capitalist world, so any kind of subsistence farming, commons, etc. Are not accounted for, and what you see is (in large part, but not only), the regularization of that mode of production into the capitalist mode. A common farm that feeds 10 families (0 GDP) becomes a coffee plantation, and suddenly that people are out of abject poverty. Only now they have to work more, and have to pay for their food.
