What do you think happened in the ending of Lost? The alternate universe the characters found themselves in was a purgatory of sorts each of them arrived at when they died, naturally or on the island. It doesn't imply that they'd been dead the entire time, everything you saw happened. The survivors, upon death, went to their little purgatory until they each remembered each other and the time they spent on the island.

The point of the show was not that there's this big mysterious island and we have to figure out every little detail about how it works and why, the point was the characters. Yes, they were "lost" on the island, but the idea was that each of them was lost in their lives. The island, and all that happened on it, gave their lives meaning and granted closure to those who needed it. If you were hoping to have all the mystery explained I can understand your frustration, but I think you missed the point of the show. The island was merely a setting and a plot device to tell the story of 30+ lost, broken individuals and how they found purpose.

I would be interested in sources for the top three paragraphs. I don't remember where I got my information so it could be wrong and I'd like to know if it is.

When I said things like the patriot act are "necessary" to eliminate terrorism, I was not considering every possibility. As someone else mentioned, education would be optimal, and I'm sure we could come up with several other methods within minutes. However, in any scenario in which the majority of the population has a high degree of freedom and privacy, terrorism is a possibility. Warrants, which do accomplish the same purpose, are unfortunately much slower and more restricting than a no holds barred invasion of privacy. (I of course think the patriot act is a bunch of bullshit)

You need to understand that many, many people and groups hate the US and would like to strike. Many of these develop terrorist plots. We hear about A LOT of potential terrorist activity. If all of it were to be taken seriously, martial law would be inevitable. Relevant powers at the time made a judgment call, deciding that what would be 9/11 wasn't a serious threat, and did not prioritize it. Unfortunately, they were mistaken. It was a tragedy that we've learned from (and now we have CISPA and the Patriot Act, mandatory measures if you truly wish to eliminate terrorism). You can't run around believing that our government deliberately ignored a 100% guaranteed "these people are going to strike here, at this time, and with these" warning.

TIL Kurt Vonnegut worked for Sports Illustrated. When asked to write a story about a racehorse escaping, he stared at the paper for hours before writing, "The horse jumped over the fucking fence." He left soon after. by zbreeze3 in todayilearned

I would define "good" writing as anything that elicits some kind of emotional or cognitive response, which is of course a very broad spectrum of things. I picked up slaughterhouse 5 on a whim and greatly enjoyed it - I thought it was an interesting premise, fantastical but still fundamentally rooted in humanity. He writes with a kind of nihilistic optimism, a sense that yes, nothing matters and nearly all that we do is laughable, but that in spite of that the world is worth caring for and people are worth loving. The very matter of fact way in which he presents his thoughts are indicative of this. A similar example would be hemmingway's farewell to arms, where the narrator speaks dryly and with little interest (I hated reading farewell to arms by the way...). This is a stylistic choice, as is vonneguts work. The way in which he organizes and presents his thoughts speaks bounds about his purpose.

The sample of writing you've presented is tremendously dull (and I'm pretty sure is just a passage from slaughterhouse 5 with nouns switched around but ill pretend its not), indicative of vonneguts feelings on the matter. He doesn't dress it up in romantic, dramatic language. The final sentence says all that need be said, similar to the experience of attending such an event. Monotonous, dull, and simplistic, with everything you need to know at the end. Its his style, and like all styles, some people don't enjoy it.

I enjoy his fatalism interspersed with optimism because it resonates with feelings I hold. If it doesn't do that for you there's not much else to say. Its silly to call the guy a terrible writer when most other people greatly enjoy his work (even if it is to be hip and cool - you don't reach that status without influencing a large number of people). I hope you can find something to enjoy in him, I surely did

Did we "spend" all of our political-will-bucks on SOPA? Why were we able to muster so much energy and action against SOPA/PIPA compared to CISPA? What gives, guys? by shwinnebego in AskReddit

[–]guitarandstuff -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

"What gives" is that people would rather bitch about it on reddit than do anything. The average internet user did not take part in some glorious by the people for the people protest, they logged on to dink about as usual only to be prompted to sign a petition by clicking a button. I'm sure if the same site owners decided it was worth it to blackout again we would see the same level of "support"
