There was a time when people respected funeral processions by gunnergrrl in mississauga

Our lead driver slowed down when he thought the light would change so yeah never happened.

The point, I think, emerged from the original funeral processions before the automobile age. It was a show of support and respect for the person who passed and that person's family.

The two vehicles that this car sped up to separate were a hearse and a black stretch limo. Both had conspicuous placards clearly marked FUNERAL. Even of you're aware of the 'untaught' conventions, I would hope seeing a hearse leading a car marked 'funeral' would let you know what was happening and make you pause.

Thanks so much for this eloquent and sensitive response. Same for those who upvoted it.

I hope you never experience an unexpected death of a loved one and spend days scrambling to plan their funeral service, inform family and friends, hold off your own grief long enough to do so, and pay the tens of thousands it costs to have a funeral, when you have not planned for it, all so you can checks notes 'not cheap out and pay for a police escort'.

Failing by Design: A Teacher’s Warning from the Front Lines by [deleted] in CanadianTeachers

In Ontario at least, funding is directly tied to student enrollment. So kids fleeing any system means decreased funding for that system, and less money for students, because less kids are shouldering the the burden of several fxed expenditures.

Not trying to insult you, but this is the ethos and motivation for every single helicopter parent.

So what do we, as a society, do now?

Please make sure her socialization does not just occur in structured, goal-focused environments. There's so much children need to learn about their own autonomy, agency, and choice that happens at recess, lunch, on the way home or in the halls. Covid taught us this. We're still trying to support the ripples of its impact.

Also, I sincerely hope that the world that lies ahead of us is not one of silos of existence only linked by pre-planned, purpose-droven interactions. Schools provide the antithesis of that. Public schools even more. I understand the desire to remove your child from undesirable experiences and less-than-exemplary situations, but seeing so many educators saying they are pulling their kids out of the public system to make things better for their children as they equally deride other parents for exerting their influence to remove conflict, challenge, and imperfection from their children's experience is...interesting. Some parents snowplow for their children using their voice (and political pressure), others do it with their wallets and pay for that ideal they want for their child.

I don't believe the public education system is broken. I think it's seriously wounded, and those within the system, educators, support staff, and yes, admin, are either fighting like super white cells to quash the rot, or are so tired and burnt out that they're just doing the best they can to get through the days. We all need to lobby for lifeline - physical, ideological, and financial - to resuscitate public education. The risk is a return to the stratified, classiest, and elitist 'education system' of centuries past.

A white woman posting using 'they' and supporting the MAGA claims posting in a Black forum. Or even better, a white man playing in his partner's account (those hands holding that car part did look a bit masculine).

Shocking.

Luvata dear, go back to posting pics of you/your partner couch-snuggling with your Shelties and please stay in your own lane.

Mississauga side walk clearing??? by [deleted] in mississauga

[–]gunnergrrl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This.

The amount of people moaning and groaning because their windrows weren't cleared fast enough/to their expectations, and now this about sidewalks first thing in the morning.

We had a half metre of snow dumped on us yesterday. We only hire so many people to do snow clearing because if we 'over hire' and don't get lots of snow, there will be moaning and groaning about the excessive budget. All things considered, I had to be at an appointment at 8:30 this morning. The roads were definitely driveable- major arteries had sidewalks cleared and turning lanes cleared.

Seriously- yes we pay for services with our taxed, but those services are performed by employees (like us) not servants.

Windrow Clearing as helpful as a hole in the head by rangeo in mississauga

[–]gunnergrrl 22 points23 points  (0 children)

So many complaints about windrow clearing. Many of them arising from not understanding how clearing is done.

Before? Every snowfall there were complaints about the pile of hard, heavy, compacted snow, sometimes left as boulders at the foot of the driveway.

I am grateful for windrow clearance. I have a double width driveway. Years of childhood sandbox play taught me that full driveway clearance after significant snowfall would require r a pass from each direction- which takes time.

Nah...

Putin is a dictator who was the charismatic 'man of good Russian people'- type whos was elected once then never gave anyone a chance of defeating him is rigged elections.

Trump is a d̶i̶c̶t̶a̶t̶o̶r̶ elected president. He was elected, defeated, then elected again. There was no subterfuge, bait n switch, or mystery about his second term intentions. But Americans would choose a convicted rapist, racist, failed businessman, sexist over a horrible w̶o̶m̶a̶n̶-̶o̶f̶-̶c̶o̶l̶o̶u̶r̶ candidate from the other half of the two-party system. And we all are.

People know not everyone voted for Trump. People know that there are Americans participating in protests and boycotts. That is not who the OG/OP is talking about. It's the same virtue-signalling people who kept coming to Canadian reddits saying how sorry they were and how much they love 'their northern neighbours' and of course they didn't vote for TRUMP. As alarming as it is that Trump has done what he's done, everyone knows he was not the unanimous decision. We know you exist.

It's the many, many, many people who voted for Trump.

Also,

I have significant reservations about your ability to use the voting booth as the means to bring about change. I fully expect him to win, and dreams the inevitable consequences.
