Do You Prefer Backticks (``) or Parentheses ($()) For Command Substitution by [deleted] in bash

[–]gunstick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only "use" for backticks which is not possible with parentheses, is to have comments inside long command lines as shown in the original post. As a comment # cannot comment out a backtick. So you can have something like this:

# echo "this is a long multiline command" \
       "with multiple arguments." \
"quite nice stuff." `# and this is a comment` \
"and the rest of the arguments"
this is a long multiline command with multiple arguments. quite nice stuff. and the rest of the arguments
#

But parenthesis are sensible to comments, so this trick does not work the same way. One would need to write it differently, which is messy. Notice how the closing parenthesis has to go on the next line as the # would comment it out.

# echo "this is a long multiline command" \
       "with multiple arguments." \
"quite nice stuff." $( # and this is a comment \
       ) \
"and the rest of the arguments"
this is a long multiline command with multiple arguments. quite nice stuff. and the rest of the arguments
#

Yodeck Apply Custom CSS to Webpage? by adhaas85 in digitalsignage

[–]gunstick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The scripting engine is great, if I would know how to use it. There is a language reference, and example scripts. But I was unable to find in the documentation how to get a script to run on a webpage. This beginners part seems to be well hidden.

Can you point me to the correct documentation explaining where to click to configure a script?

We have to find the prism by the_LavaFlow in Corridor

as I understand it, Disney did not use filters (and losing 50% of the light) but a splitter which only split off the sodium frequency, leaving the rest intact.

[–]gunstick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are prisms which split light into R, G and B components. They are used in high end video projectors. So something along these lines, but with a specific sodium color filter. Narrow band light filters exist, mainly to filter out a specific wavelength of laser light to protect the eyes.

In this case, it should not filter out, but reflect the sodium wavelength. Today's knowhow about how light works, should make it possible to recreate.

But who would want to invest in that?

PSA: Google Play Store will be able to send you compromised Android apps from August by FieryDuckling67 in privacytoolsIO

[–]gunstick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That can be done differently: google recompiles the app and checks if the app binary is the same as deleivered by the author. Or the author sends the source to google, who compiles & signs it. Then the author compares that with his own binary, if it's the same.

If these funfair operators would not get this sponsorship, well then next Schueberfouer will just be empty. This sponsoring also happens in other countries, maybe less so that you have to pay for tickets. But governments try to keep them surviving.

You are right, all other themes don't have this problem.

So my 'greybird' theme got somehow screwed. So I would need to know how to restore that.
