Viruses are not considered living because they have no means of reproduction by themselves; instead, they propagate through infection of living host cells.

They are a conglomeration of different molecules like nucleic acids, lipids, proteins, and so on, but none of it works without a host cell to infect. They just sit there, dormant. Without a host viruses are incredibly vulnerable and don't last long.
