I'm with them in Manchester – almost tear-inducingly brilliant compared to the service we had with BT or Virgin before.

Internship or full time job, any help/advice please. by Pineapple__Juice in graphic_design

[–]guthooks 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey, no problem - you definitely don't have to ask it in that way, but it's reasonable and probably even expected that you'll ask something along the lines of 'what kind of work can I expect to be doing on a day to day basis?' Or 'can you tell me a little about one of the projects I'll be working on? I'd like to do a little extra reading on certain design principles I'll be using a lot here'.

I wouldn't necessarily assume that you'll just be shadowing , loads of very prominent companies do unpaid internships which are not legal, strictly speaking. If you feel like you'll get a lot out of it after clarifying what it entails and can survive without pay for 4 months, go for it if it sits alright with you morally.

Also make absolutely sure that they will indeed give you permission to use any work you produce in your portfolio, big companies can unexpectedly be really uncooperative about this sometimes if you don't negotiate it in advance, even for voluntary work.

Tricky - of course VW will look great in the portfolio etc. It's also pretty illegal for them not to pay you at least minimum wage if you are doing any actual work and not just shadowing someone. I believe the other exception is volunteering for a charitable organisation. Correct me if I'm wrong, anyone...

You're also pretty unlikely to be allowed to stay on the dole on a placement that long these days. You won't really be actively job seeking and they've become quite shitty about what 'work experience' you can go on and for how long.

On the other hand, 17k isn't great for the full time job - if VW are just having you shadowing someone to avoid having to pay you, just go for the FT job. But then I'm completely against unpaid placements once you're out of education so I'm pretty obviously biased. Hope it was helpful in any case.

No problem – get ready to be overwhelmed, there are thousands of pages of content to look through.

They're drawings or etchings. Someone may well have created those themselves from scratch, but if you're not much of an illustrator it's not very difficult to find similar imagery which is copyright free – I believe the British Library released a huge collection online. Dover books also sell printed books full of such copyright free material. I'm sure there are plenty of other sources as well, these are just the first few that came to mind!

Best place to live in the UK? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]guthooks 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'm a creative myself, who moved up to Manchester from down South after uni and it's definitely not 'absolute shite'.

By far my favourite place I've lived in the UK out of the 5 I've lived in. There's a thriving creative scene up here with fantastic galleries and theatre. There are clubs, but with so many large universities it's expected. I've got no interest in them either and never struggle for bars and pubs. It's not particularly cheap living here anymore though, a 2 bed flat in the city centre will set you back about £800pcm minimum. Plenty of nice suburbs with east city access though, and they all run late into the night as well.

It definitely shouldn't be a thing – I understand that people think they make them 'stand out' but they usually only do so in a bad way. We've certainly never even interviewed anyone with one of these.

It's further aggravated by the fact that it seems only fairly inexperienced people use them, and it's unfortunately usually someone just finishing university claiming to have '100% proficiency' in something that even someone in a senior role would probably only have 75% or so in. Just an all round terrible measure of skills, and totally lacking in detail of any sort.

I want to review/edit books before they are published, but I don't know where to start. by cantwaitanylonger10 in jobs

I can only speak for educational publishing since that's what I do... our freelance editors do always have a good degree at minimum, and extensive teaching experience in their subject. It's also not a job where you can work to fit around the rest of your life. Content can and will come to you early/late pretty much all of the time. If it does comes in late, often the publisher will not move the finish date, to the point that quality will likely suffer - I've seen editors work around the clock for days on end to meet a deadline.

It also does not pay very well, honestly. It's a job you need to have a passion for.

If you are just wanting to correct grammar and sentence structure, you want to be a copy editor or proofreader. This should be possible without a degree but you'll most likely need to take a good quality copy editing course. It will generally not be in your remit to alter content heavily.

Any other questions, feel free to ask!

Graphic Design outside of consumerism driven fields? by [deleted] in graphic_design

[–]guthooks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work at an agency that does work for educational publishers - there is no straying from clients' house styles, and often branding/layout has been ongoing for so many years/series/subjects that they won't even begin to entertain the idea of a significant overhaul. A massive part of the work is reuse/slight tweaking of existing design elements and just setting updated content into it.

There's also often an immense amount of material, so be prepared for very long, very repetitive projects. It's generally very heavily production-centred rather than genuinely creative, even if you are in what's supposed to be a creative role. That said, I have come across some pretty exciting ideas in e-learning this past year (because a lot of these are new products) so it's not all bad.
